In Japan in the year 20XX, Anomaly Zones appear without warning. Reona Minazuki, voiced by Hitomi Ueda, is shopping with her friend Arisa Kato, voiced by Natsumi Haruse, when the mall transforms and the two are separated. Reona becomes a Diver for the government-backed Anomaly Zone Countermeasures Office and returns to the zones voluntarily to find Arisa. On her first Dive, most of her fellow Divers are killed, a strange power awakens inside her, and she becomes the sole survivor.

The supporting cast is led by Yuiga Koda, the office operator and Reona's partner, who gives precise support during Dives; Kyoka Sudo, the founder and director of the office, who once survived a zone through her own power; Imari Fushimi, the research head who turns recovered anomalies into equipment; May Hibiya, the security head and a former elite Diver; and Kaede Mori, a mysterious figure Reona meets during a Dive. A young girl who briefly travelled with Reona and Arisa during the mall incident also appears, having lost her speech after witnessing her parents killed by Anomalies.
