Moodles are Project Zomboid’s dashboard lights. They are not decorative icons: they tell you when the character is losing combat power, hydration, temperature control, health or morale. Current Build 42 references index 26 vanilla moodles, but survival becomes much easier if you stop trying to memorize all 26 and learn a triage order instead.
Quick answer
Fix immediate health loss first: bleeding and severe injury beat every comfort problem.
Do not enter a hard fight while exhausted, very tired, in serious pain or heavily panicked.
Treat the right-side stack as a queue: stabilize combat, then hydration/food/sleep, then weather and morale.

| Family | Examples | What goes wrong | First response |
|---|---|---|---|
Combat | Endurance, Panic, Pain | Slower swings, bad aim, weak escapes | Break sight, rest, stabilize |
Needs | Hunger, Thirst, Tired | Long-run performance and recovery drop | Drink, eat, sleep |
Health | Bleeding, Injured, Sick | Direct health threat | Bandage, clean, diagnose |
Weather | Wet, Hypothermia, Hyperthermia | Movement/healing penalties can snowball | Shelter, dry, change layers |
Mental | Stress, Bored, Unhappy | Poor morale and decision quality | Safety, meal, reading/media |
Read the stack as a priority queue
After every fight, glance at the right side before you touch the next door. One mild icon is often manageable; several mild icons can combine into a dangerous state. The classic failure is entering combat while tired, thirsty and carrying too much, then blaming the final zombie instead of the three warnings that came first.
Hover any icon you do not recognize. Similar-looking moodles can ask for completely different fixes.
The combat killers: endurance, tiredness, panic and pain
Exhaustion reduces your ability to run and fight safely. Deep tiredness is not a “one more house” state. Panic hurts firearm performance and makes messy fights less forgiving. Pain is a warning that the body is already compromised.
When several of these appear together, stop. Break line of sight, sit or rest when safe, treat wounds, lower carried weight, and re-enter only when the stack is under control.
Hunger, thirst and sleep are timers, not flavor
Thirst and hunger become progressively more expensive the longer you ignore them. Build your loot routes around water and food rather than treating them as last-minute emergencies. Sleep is even more important because tiredness can make an otherwise healthy character combat-unsafe.
Coffee or pills can buy a short window in some situations, but they are not a replacement for a proper sleep cycle.
Weather and sickness need diagnosis
Wet, cold and heat moodles can look like soft warnings until they stack with fatigue or injury. Get dry, fix insulation and move indoors before the problem becomes a combat penalty.
Sickness is not one diagnosis. Corpse exposure, bad food, dirty water and Knox infection are different problems. Do not interpret every Queasy icon the same way; inspect recent exposures and wounds.
Mental moodles still matter
Boredom, unhappiness and stress usually do not demand the same emergency response as bleeding, but ignoring them for days creates a worse routine. Safe indoor time, cooked food, books, music or other entertainment can clear the soft stack before it becomes part of every loot run.
In multiplayer, call out the combat-critical moodles. A teammate who is exhausted or panicked should not be the person holding the doorway.

| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
Too many icons at once | Stop looting; handle combat-critical moodles first. |
Full health but fights feel awful | Check exhaustion, tiredness, pain, panic and load. |
Queasy after multiple exposures | Review wounds, corpse exposure, food and water instead of assuming one cause. |
FAQ
What is the most dangerous moodle?
Bleeding and severe injury are immediate threats, while exhaustion/tiredness/panic can make the next fight lethal even with full health.
Can I ignore boredom and unhappiness?
For a short time, yes. Do not let them become part of a larger stack with hunger, stress and fatigue.
Does Build 42 change the basic moodle idea?
The system remains the game’s status language, but darker nights, longer tasks and broader survival systems make triage even more important.
