Project Zomboid/Maps and Bases

Project Zomboid Louisville Map Guide (Build 42.20.4): POIs, Bases and Raid Routes

Guide chapters12 chapters

Louisville is still the largest high-density urban destination in Knox Country, but Build 42 changes how you should enter it. Vertical buildings can now reach far beyond the old height limits, and some Louisville skyscrapers contain up to 32 zombie-filled floors. Treat the city as a chain of staged operations, not one giant loot run.

Quick answer

  • Louisville is not a normal character-create spawn; build transport and a fallback point before you treat it as routine.

  • Use the southern checkpoint or an outer safehouse as staging, then raid one district or landmark at a time.

  • Vertical exploration is now a real risk: fatigue, stairs and blocked exits matter as much as raw zombie count.

Do not make downtown your first Louisville bed

Louisville punishes the same bad habit as West Point, just at a larger scale: trying to sleep inside the hottest block before you have learned the exits. Stage outside the dense core. The southern checkpoint or a quieter western/riverside safehouse gives you somewhere to unload, rest, repair and abandon a bad raid without driving all the way home.

A good Louisville run has two maps in your head: the target and the retreat. If you can point to the mall but not to the next safe bed, the route is unfinished.

High-rises are a vertical expedition

Build 42 can place up to 32 zombie-filled floors in Louisville skyscrapers. That makes water, fatigue and staircase control part of the POI itself. Clear the ground floor and the street before climbing, keep a small cache below, and never let tiredness turn a stairwell into your only battlefield.

The reward is not only loot. Tall buildings can produce unusual base or observation opportunities, but the higher you go, the more important a known exit becomes.

Build a one-target raid loop

Choose one objective per serious trip: mall, storage, military/security target, or a residential/base scout. Arrive rested with fuel, enough carrying space and a firm return time. Multi-POI greed is how a clean raid becomes a night drive through unfamiliar streets.

For heavy targets, park facing your exit before you enter. That small habit matters more in Louisville than almost anywhere else.

Base options: staging beats prestige

Fenced homes and outer residential pockets make better first Louisville bases than dramatic downtown towers. A tower can become a project later; your first base should make parking, unloading and retreat easy. West-side or river-adjacent staging also gives you a visible orientation line.

If your campaign already has a strong out-of-city base, consider a Louisville raid house rather than moving permanently. A small stocked safehouse can be more useful than hauling your entire life into the city.

Build 42 map note: Louisville is still evolving

The official 42.20 overview says the new high-detail mapping standard has been applied to several towns, while the remaining towns and Louisville are planned for future overhaul passes. Use current B42 map layers for routes, but do not assume every older Louisville landmark received the same 42.20 full-town glow-up as Rosewood or Riverside.

ProblemFix

Downtown raid keeps becoming an overnight disaster

Limit the trip to one objective and set a return time before entering.

Stairwell becomes blocked

Fall back to a cleared floor; do not push upward while tired or overloaded.

Too much loot to carry

Stage containers near the exit and use a cargo vehicle instead of making repeated exhausted walks.

FAQ

Can I spawn in Louisville in normal vanilla character creation?

No. Treat Louisville as a destination reached from the main Knox Country world.

What makes Build 42 Louisville different?

The expanded vertical system matters most: some skyscrapers can reach 32 zombie-filled floors.

Where should I establish my first Louisville safehouse?

Usually outside the hottest downtown blocks, with a clear road, parking and a short retreat route.
