1. Wrenwood streets: Grace

The game opens with a cutscene in Grace's office, where her superior sends her to the Wrenwood Hotel to investigate a new victim linked to a mysterious disease. It is the same hotel where her mother was killed eight years ago. When you gain control of Grace on the streets of Wrenwood, follow the on-screen tutorials and keep walking forward. Near the barber shop, look at the pole on the right side of the street: a map is attached to it. Interact with it to collect the Wrenwood City Guide, the first collectible file in the game.

Keep following the path past the missing-person posters until you reach a Do Not Cross tape barrier, where a police officer clears you to cross. The path is linear. When you reach a congested area, crouch to slip through the scaffolding and barriers. The Wrenwood Hotel main door is locked, so head past the hotel sign into the alley and follow the ripped-down police tape to the hotel back entrance. Inside it is very dark, so turn on your flashlight manually: it does not switch on by itself.

2. Hotel lobby and bar: the Old Key

Pass through the kitchen until you reach the Lounge and Bar. You will be prompted to read the Investigation Report: open your inventory, select the file, and read it. Then look at the pillar of the bar, where a photograph of Grace is taped. Interact with the photo and rotate it to look at the back. An Old Key is taped there, with a note pointing to Room

204. A cutscene plays right after: Grace hears a door slam, panics, and draws her gun. When you regain control, your objective is to head to Room 204.

Use the Old Key on the door to the side of the bar, then walk down the hallway. In the lobby, near the luggage on the left, pick up the Hotel Pamphlet, another file for your collection. Head behind the reception desk and through the door into the office. Open the top drawer of the blue table to collect a Notice of Closure, then interact with the frame on the wall to obtain the Wrenwood Hotel Floor Plan. The map helps you orient yourself in the hotel, so grab it before heading upstairs.

3. Second floor: Wire Cutters and Room 204

Go upstairs. At the top you will see a pool table and a locked Emergency Exit door: take note of the exit now, because you will need its key later. Examine the box on the pool table to collect the Wire Cutters. Then go to the door held shut with wires and use the Wire Cutters to cut them open, clearing the hallway that leads to Room 204.

Follow the hallway to Room 204 at the end and go inside. A radio is playing a report: turn it off. Then examine the photographs on the bed. The game highlights one photo in particular, and interacting with it triggers the flashback. Do not leave the room before examining the photos, or the story will not advance.

4. The flashback: eight years ago

The flashback takes you back eight years, when Grace was living with her mother Alyssa in Room

204. Grace receives a phone call, the power suddenly cuts out, and Alyssa urges her to escape the hotel. This section is mostly a scripted, linear sequence: follow Alyssa and run when prompted. Mid-escape, a cutscene shows Alyssa hiding something behind a painting on the wall. The flashback then ends, and you return to the present with Grace staring at her mother's photo, realizing Alyssa left something hidden. Your new objective is to find what Alyssa hid.

5. What Alyssa hid, and the escape

Head back down to the hotel lobby. You will recognize the same painting and luggage cart from the flashback: the painting hangs on the wall opposite the reception desk. Interact with the luggage cart to move it out of the way, then retrieve the leather wallet from behind the painting. Open the wallet to find Alyssa's Journal inside. Keep inspecting the wallet's contents until you find a disk, which triggers another cutscene.

Right after collecting the disk, an infected police officer attacks Grace, starting the first enemy encounter in the hotel. Follow the on-screen prompts: hold the Interact button to free yourself from the luggage cart, and move away from the direction the officer aims when he shoots. You cannot free yourself and dodge at the same time, so keep holding Interact after each dodge. Once you break free, you automatically pick up the Emergency Exit Key, then a Fire Poker. Press Attack when prompted to resist.

As soon as you fully regain control of Grace, do not stay and fight. Run back upstairs to the second floor and interact with the Emergency Exit door you noted earlier. Grace automatically uses the Emergency Exit Key, and the door opens.

6. Victor Gideon

After the escape, Grace hears music coming from the top floor. Follow the music upstairs to a room where a man sits by the fireplace: Victor Gideon, the antagonist. He speaks to Grace, telling her he lured her to the hotel, then chokes her unconscious and carries her away. This cutscene ends Grace's part of the chapter and hands the story to Leon.

7. Leon: the streets of Wrenwood

A cutscene shows Leon stuck in traffic spotting Victor carrying the unconscious Grace. When Leon moves to intercept him, Victor fires a syringe into a nearby passerby and disappears into the chaos. The Report on Victor Gideon is added to your Files automatically. You now control Leon, with the objective to go after Victor. The people Victor injected are already turning, so this is the game's first combat section: aim and shoot, and use melee attacks when an infected gets close. After a few shots an infected briefly freezes, which is your window to follow up with a melee strike.

Note on Elbridge: the playable Leon section in this chapter takes place on the streets of Wrenwood, not Elbridge. Elbridge is where Leon had been investigating the latest victim before he was directed to Wrenwood. Do not look for a separate playable Elbridge street section inside Chapter 1.

Keep moving forward along the linear street. At the intersection, turn right, where panicked civilians are running toward you from the opposite direction. Eliminate the infected along the way and pick up any ammo they drop. Further on, a van with its back doors open holds green herbs that restore a small amount of health. Right after the van, an infected in a construction outfit attacks with an axe: this is where you first use Leon's Hatchet. Block or deflect just before a hit lands to create an opening, then swing the Hatchet. Continue to the car pileup at the next intersection, clear the wave of infected, and work your way around the pileup. A cutscene plays on the other side: Leon reports that he has lost Victor's trail, and his operator gives a new lead, that Victor recently acquired a building, the Rhodes Hill Chronic Care Center. That ends Leon's part in Wrenwood and closes the chapter.

Frequently asked questions

Is Elbridge part of Chapter 1? No. The playable Leon section in this chapter is on the streets of Wrenwood. Elbridge is where Leon had been investigating before he was directed to Wrenwood, and it is not a separate playable street section in this chapter.

Do I have to fight the infected officer as Grace? No, the encounter is a scripted struggle. Follow the on-screen prompts to free yourself and dodge, pick up the Emergency Exit Key and the Fire Poker, then run upstairs to the Emergency Exit. Do not stay and fight.

How does Chapter 1 end? After Leon clears the car pileup, a cutscene says he has lost Victor's trail, and the next lead points to the Rhodes Hill Chronic Care Center. That is the end of the Wrenwood chapter; the next chapter is the Care Center.
