Part 1 of our Silver Pines walkthrough covers the game's opening hours: the Miner Diner and the Crimson Bear Motel in the Outskirts, your first boss, the ferry crossing, and a full sweep of Downtown that ends with the birdcage puzzle solved, the café lockbox opened, and the bridge into Riverside unlocked. Expect your first two firearms, your first stamina and inventory upgrades, and the setup for the hunt for the five missing cable car bells. New to the game's systems — payphone saves, weapon repairs, Mementos? Read our Silver Pines Beginner's Guide first. This walkthrough assumes you know them and focuses on the route.

The Miner Diner

  • Enter the restroom and take the Locked Ring Box from the sink. It will not open for a long time — the box only opens once you have all five Gold Stars, and what it holds matters for the secret ending — so never leave it behind.

  • In the kitchen, take the Diner Key hanging by the radio, and drink from the coffee pot beside it: that is a permanent stamina upgrade, the first of many hidden in plain sight as ordinary coffee pots.

  • Read the note in the restroom for the emergency frequency 89.0 MHz, then tune the kitchen radio to it and listen to the broadcast.

  • Unlock the front door with the Diner Key and step outside. Answer the ringing payphone. Mr. Jackman, your client, tells you the missing musician Eddie Velvet was staying at the Crimson Bear Motel. Save here — the first coin at each payphone is free. Check the coin return slot while you are at it. Use the Car Key on your car's trunk for the case file, your camera, and starting supplies. If you have a spare coin and want an easy achievement, dial 9-1-1 on any payphone ("Call 911"). Head down the road and take the Outskirts Map from the notice board. The ferry station at the end of the road is locked, and the sheriff is standing outside it — you will come back here with a key. For now, continue to the motel.

The Crimson Bear Motel — getting inside

The motel gate has a keypad that wants Eddie's guest number. Work the problem in this order:

  • Enter the registration office west of the gate. A notice points you to Rodney's General Store.

  • Go to Garth's Pharmacy instead, first. In the back room, take the Underpass Key from the shelf.

  • The Underpass Key opens the gate beside the motel. Go down through the underground passage, climb the wall at the far end, and you will surface at the general store. Save at the payphone outside.

  • Inside the store, read the calendar clue in the office: the freezer code is 23 plus the current date — the 11th — so

2311. Open the freezer, dodge between the hanging carcasses (Spacebar), and take the Check-in Key from the travel bag in the back.

Outside the store you will find your first melee weapon on the ground — the box cutter (some guides call it a utility knife; it is the same blade). Equip it. It cuts the white fabric and plastic barriers you have been walking past. Optional backtrack, worth the two minutes: return to the underpass, cut the barrier there, and follow the path past the Burning Man to a shack holding another coffee pot stamina upgrade and a Memento Vessel Fragment (a wind chime — every four fragments you collect combine into an extra Memento slot). Back at the motel, cut the barrier inside the registration office and unlock the desk with the Check-in Key. The Motel Guest Register shows Eddie's guest number. Note: The guest number is randomised per playthrough according to showgamer's route; Neoseeker's run had 24246, which is the value most often reported. Read your own register — do not trust a printed number, including ours. Enter the number at the gate keypad to open the motel grounds.

The motel grounds: fuse, pool key, and the Grizzly Suite

Take the Motel Map pinned outside the Porcelain Bear Gift Shop, then explore the gift shop. The gun cabinet inside is locked with a code you do not have yet — remember it. In the flooded basement you will find a palm tree door with no handle, and a 40A Electrical Fuse on a workbench. Take the fuse.

  • Outside, find the fuse box by the arcade building. Insert the fuse and flip all three switches to restore power.

  • Inside the games building, load the BB rifle with Pellets and hit all four targets to win the Pool Key. Before you leave, check the crate reached through the vent for a Hip Bag inventory upgrade.

  • The pool area is a hub: payphone, storage box, and vending machine. Save. You can hear crying from Room

    3. In the changing room, search the hanging shirt for the Grizzly Room Keycard.

  • Enter Room 5, cut the fabric barrier, drop through the hole in the floor, and follow the vent route to pick up the Cleaning Solution. Open the Grizzly Suite with the keycard. Take the .38 Snub-Nose Revolver from the chair (five rounds per cylinder — reload before fights, not during), plus ammunition. Open the guitar case for the Torn Photo of a Woman, the first half of a missable Memento you will complete much later in the Rabbit Hole bar. A creature bursts in as you search — your revolver's first real test. Then take the Pool Skimmer and read the motel brochure, which teaches you how to phone guest rooms from a payphone.

A motel guest room

Climb down the pool ladder by Room 1 and use the Pool Skimmer on the drainpipe to fish out a Grime-Covered Object. Combine it with the Cleaning Solution in your inventory: it is a Door Handle.

Now use the poolside payphone to call Room 3 — dial 5-8-8-8-3. The woman who answers gives you the gun cabinet combination:

6671. Go back to the gift shop and open the cabinet for the W-500 Shotgun and 12-gauge shells. Fit the Door Handle to the palm tree door in the gift-shop basement. Go through, flip the switch, and watch the light turn red: the room on the other side is the Rabbit Hole bar, in a version of the motel that should not exist. Talk to the bartender and the manager, then sit at the empty table and watch the story sequence — Eddie Velvet, performing. When it ends, flip the switch by the neon sign to return to the basement.

The W-500 ends arguments quickly — and empties your shell pouch just as fast. Wych Elm / Team17 (via Steam).

The Rabbit Hole and the tunnel boss

Before you leave, pick up the Chipped Porcelain Bear Memento by the door, examine the cable car advertisement on the desk (it marks the cable car station on your map), and take the Ferry Station Key from the table.

Tunnel boss. The creature hangs from the ceiling and drops without warning — except that it does warn you: crumbling rock and falling debris mark where it is about to swing down. Move when you see the dust, then hit it while it hangs in reach. Halfway through, it starts summoning shadow creatures on the ground. One melee hit disperses each of them; do not waste shotgun shells on shadows. Loot the body afterwards for a Memento that reduces damage taken by 10%.

At the ferry station, pet the cat (there is an achievement for it, and the cat matters later), cut the barrier on the left for a Hip Bag (+2 inventory slots), then use the control panel to call the ferry. Save at the phone booth before you board.

Downtown: the birdcage and the five bells

The ferry drops you in Downtown (Central District). Work this first sweep in order:

  • At the dock, shoot down the hanging bell for a Memento Vessel Fragment.

  • Take the Downtown Map from the bus stop by Loomis Park. The park gate is boarded up — you need a crowbar you do not have yet.

  • Cross the bridge east and talk to the stranger with the umbrella. Then enter Friendly Paws Veterinary Clinic and take the Red Bird Statuette from the rolling cart beside the locked enclosure. Talk to the prisoner inside the enclosure before you leave.

  • At the Quiet Hours Cafe on Market Street — your Downtown hub, with a payphone, storage, and another coffee pot stamina upgrade — find the birdcage with three coloured nests in the back. Place the Red Bird Statuette. Note the locked box in the back room too — it needs a key you do not have yet.

At Sport Smart, photograph the card-suits sign through the window. The order is Spades → Hearts → Clubs → Diamonds.

At the Movie Theater, take the Yellow Bird Statuette from the counter. Optional: the vending machine sells a Projection Room Key for 20 coins, which leads to the Nail Gun upstairs. The auditorium itself is pitch black — leave it until you have a flashlight. For the Silver Bird Statuette, pass the liquor store and stop to talk to the Digging Man at his mobile home (he recurs all game — be polite). Shoot the padlock on the suspended ladder beyond him, climb up, and take the statuette from the bird's nest. Drop into the alley behind the café, enter the suit order — Spades, Hearts, Clubs, Diamonds — on the gate keypad, and collect the Baseball Bat inside. Unlock the door back into the café: that is your first Downtown shortcut. Shoot the shutter padlock nearby and ring the small bell beyond it for another Vessel Fragment. Place the Yellow and Silver statuettes in the café birdcage alongside the Red one. A completed cage gives you the Smooth Stone with a Hole Memento. That closes Downtown's first puzzle — our Silver Pines Bird Cage Puzzle guide walks through it on its own page.

The cable car station

Head for the Cable Car Station at the north end of Downtown. Save at the photo booth outside first.

  • Swim west past the burning vehicle — watch your stamina — and go through the tunnel with two enemies. You can slip past both. Unlock the shortcut door from the far side, then climb the stairs to Silver Road.

  • Behind the railing near the station entrance, loot the bag for the Quiet Hour Key. Take it back to the café now or later: the back-room box holds the Double-Action Mechanism, a permanent upgrade for your revolver.

  • Inside the station, take the Broken Plaque from the bench. Upstairs, take the Riverside Bridge Key from the A hook of the bell rack and fit the Broken Plaque into the board above the bells. The board is a shell: the bells themselves are gone. Ring the balcony bell for another Vessel Fragment.

  • At the ticket booth, a stranger lays out the main quest: recover the five missing cable car bells. Their locations are circled on your map — three in and around Downtown, the rest in Riverside and Church Hill. Cross the bridge with the Riverside Bridge Key. On the far side, a motionless man stands mid-bridge — talk to him — and a notice board holds the Riverside Map. Part 1 ends here.

Next: Part 2 — Riverside, Town Hall & Church Hill takes you through the junkyard, into the Sheriff's Office for Cable Car Bell A, and up to the church for the Sledgehammer.
