Iron Road is live. The Long Dark's Early Access Survival expansion launched on Steam at 11:00 Pacific on October 27, 2026 — 02:00 Beijing time on October 28 — at $24.99 with a 10% launch discount, which puts the day-one price at $22.49. This guide covers what launch day actually includes, what the announced price path means for your timing, and what is still on the roadmap rather than in the game. It does not list railway achievements or a complete Cauldron Island location set, because neither has been confirmed yet.

What launch day includes

Launch day buys access to the first part of Cauldron Island: Anna Island, the first of five islands in the caldera, with over 30 kilometres of railroad to explore. The other four islands — Stella, Freya, Morag, and Skye — are locked behind future Early Access updates, not included at launch. The Prototype Train is available from the start: find it, bring it back to life, and use it as both transport and mobile shelter. Hinterland describes the train as having components that need maintenance and eventual upgrades, plus its own survival needs, and points players to Repair Bays for upgrades and customization. The Fulmar autopilot boat is also live at launch, travelling between Desolation Point on Great Bear Island and Port Remnant on Cauldron Island, and it can carry gear and resources back to the base game. Two smaller systems are instant unlocks as well: the Portable Oil Heater and the Wax Cylinder Player, the latter for the dozens of wax cylinders that carry the voices behind Cauldron Island’s mystery. The mystery itself follows Alice McLeod, retracing the path of her great-grandfather Hamish McLeod, the industrialist whose whale-oil empire collapsed a century ago.

Boarding the Fulmar is not free: the travel screen lists tinder, water, calories and fuel required for the crossing.

The price, and the two hikes already announced

Iron Road costs $24.99, with a 10% launch discount that makes the day-one price $22.49. Hinterland has already announced the rest of the path: the price rises by $5 to $29.99 around the midway point of the roadmap, and by another $5 to $34.99 when Iron Road reaches 1.0. No calendar dates have been announced for either increase, so any article that gives you a date for them is guessing. The studio’s own framing is blunt: if you are interested, the best time to buy is now. It also notes that general Long Dark product pricing is set to rise across the board, so Iron Road will not stay more expensive than the Survival Mode base game forever. The launch post gives no end date for the 10% discount, so treat it as a launch window, not a permanent price.

Buy now or wait

Hinterland is unusually direct about this one: if you do not enjoy participating in an often-updated game, or you do not like paying up front for something unfinished, the studio would rather you wait until the Early Access campaign concludes. Buy now if you want the lowest price on the announced path, you want to play the train systems as they are tuned with player feedback, and you accept that launch day is a partial roster. Wait if you want the full five islands, finished tuning, or a console version — Iron Road is Steam-only for at least the first half of 2027, with console timing uncommitted beyond that. Wait, too, if your decision depends on railway achievements or a complete location guide: neither exists in confirmed form yet, and this site will publish those as separate pieces when the lists are real rather than guessed.

Your existing saves: both halves of the answer

You can use your current favourite save with Iron Road; Hinterland says there should be no compatibility issues and no need to start a new save to reach the new content — the Fulmar will be waiting in Desolation Point. That is only half the answer, and the studio states the other half plainly: Iron Road is Early Access, so there is some risk to your save. If you have a save you would be heartbroken to lose, start Iron Road with a fresh save, at least until you feel confident in build stability. Do not carry a multi-hundred-day run into a launch build on the strength of the first sentence alone.

What is not in launch day

The roadmap is not the launch. Still on the roadmap rather than in the game: the other four islands; harpoon and seal hunting; the whale oil lamp; the flensing knife; canned whale meat; new clothing such as the whaler’s coat and sealskin boots; and track hazards including electrified sections, puzzle gates and aurora gates. The railway achievement list has not been published, the full Cauldron Island location and puzzle list is unconfirmed, and day-one player review totals are not yet available, so none of those appear here as numbers. Hinterland plans monthly small updates and quarterly large updates, with hotfixes between; the large updates are where new islands and major train systems arrive.

What to watch next

The next confirmed beats are the update cadence itself and the gradual unlock of the other islands, each with its own points of interest and narrative. When the achievement list and a verifiable location set exist, they will get their own guides, linked from this article’s related section. For now, the honest launch-day summary is: Anna Island, 30-plus kilometres of track, a train to restore, a boat that connects two worlds, and a price that will only go up from here.

FAQ

Do I need the base game?

Yes. Iron Road is a paid Early Access expansion for Survival mode, and it requires The Long Dark base game.

Can I use my existing save?

Yes, with a warning attached. Hinterland says current saves should work and the Fulmar will be in Desolation Point, but because this is Early Access, a save you would be heartbroken to lose is safer on a fresh save until build stability is proven.

Is there a console version?

Not at launch. Iron Road is Steam-only for at least the first half of 2027; console timing beyond that is uncommitted.
