Best Valheim Mods for 1.0.21: The Verified Shortlist (BepInEx and Thunderstore)

Only two packages passed a per-package 1.0.21 check on 4 November 2026: BepInExPack Valheim 5.4.2360 and ValheimPlus (Iceskull Temporary) 1.3.4, plus a server-side note on ValheimOne 0.13.29. Every famous package that did not pass is named with its older pin, so you do not install it by mistake.

Best Valheim Mods for 1.0.21: The Verified Shortlist (BepInEx and Thunderstore)

Most best Valheim mods lists you will find today are stale. They were written for Valheim 1.0, or for an earlier 1.0 hotfix, and they keep recommending packages whose authors have not pinned them to the game build you actually run. Patch 1.0.21 arrived on 28 October 2026, and a mod built for 1.0.20 can break on 1.0.21: after that patch, mods built for 1.0.20 that called a changed game method threw MissingMethodException errors until their authors shipped new builds. So this guide does something narrower and more honest. It recommends only the packages whose author pages we checked on 4 November 2026 and found to name Valheim 1.0.21 explicitly. Everything famous that did not pass that check is named in the re-check section below, with the exact older pin we found, so you can see why it is not on the list instead of guessing.

At a glance

  • Verified for Valheim 1.0.21 on 4 November 2026: BepInExPack Valheim 5.4.2360, and ValheimPlus (Iceskull Temporary) 1.3.4. One server-side package, ValheimOne 0.13.29, is also verified for 1.0.21 and is noted separately for server admins.

  • Iron Gate position: there is no official mod API, no Steam Workshop for Valheim, and no mod support on consoles. Iron Gate has said it cannot guarantee that any mods will be functional when 1.0 releases.

  • Mods are PC only. Console players cannot install them, and a server that requires client-side mod files locks console players out.

  • Install in a mod-manager profile, never directly over your only vanilla install. Back up your world and your character first, add one package at a time, and test before adding the next.

  • Server and every client must run the same version of every shared package, or players are turned away with an incompatible version error.

  • Nothing in this article is a download-count ranking. Download totals are catalog snapshots, not proof that a package works on your build, so this guide does not use them.

Before you install: the Iron Gate position and the PC-only rule

Valheim modding is community-run. Iron Gate allows mods but does not officially support them, ships no official mod API, and does not feature a Steam Workshop for Valheim. Its 1.0 FAQ position, as reported in server-setup coverage, is blunt: since there is no official mod support, it cannot guarantee that any mods will be functional when 1.0 releases. Treat every compatibility claim below as dated, not permanent. A package verified for 1.0.21 today can break on the next hotfix, and the fix is the author's next release, not a setting you can change. That also settles the console question. There is no mod support on PlayStation 5, Xbox, or Switch 2, and console players cannot install anything. Server-only mods are fine on a crossplay server, but any mod that needs a copy on each client is PC-only in practice: a modded server that requires client files locks console players out, and crossplay plus client-required BepInEx mods do not mix. Before you touch anything, back up your world and your character, and keep an unmodded copy. Valheim 1.0 changed the save format, so do not assume an old backup restores cleanly into a modded 1.0.21 profile without testing. If the game stops launching after an install, roll back the most recent change first. If the server will not start at all, move the BepInEx plugins folder aside and boot vanilla to confirm the base game is fine before blaming the world.

The verified shortlist

1. BepInExPack Valheim 5.4.2360, by denikson: the foundation, not a content mod. Every other package on this list runs through BepInEx, a general-purpose Unity mod loader that loads plugins into the game on launch and patches game methods without touching the original game files. BepInExPack Valheim is the Valheim-preconfigured pack: BepInEx 5.4.23.6 with the correct entry point for Valheim and a preconfigured file that enables the console. It adds no gameplay of its own. Install it first, and install it alone, before any content package. Verification for 1.0.21: the pack version 5.4.2360 is the dependency named by the 1.0.21-validated ValheimPlus package below, which states it runs on Valheim 1.0.21 with BepInExPack Valheim 5.4.2360, containing BepInEx 5.4.23.6 and UnityDoorstop 4.6.0. The pack was also updated on 28 October 2026, the day patch 1.0.21 landed. How to install: use a mod manager with a profile, such as Gale, Thunderstore Mod Manager, or r2modman, and launch with the manager's Start modded option. For a manual install, start from a clean, unmodified Valheim folder, download the pack, and move the contents of the BepInExPack Valheim folder into the Valheim game folder. Done correctly, the folder holds BepInEx, winhttp.dll, and doorstop_config.ini, and on Windows a BepInEx console window appears next to the game. Check the console: information and message lines are fine, but red lines are errors and need fixing before you add anything else. The pack is maintained in the Valheim community by Azumatt, Vapok, and Margmas. Do not ask for help with this Valheim-specific pack in the official BepInEx Discord: the Valheim community runs a customized version, and the official BepInEx maintainers cannot help with it.

ValheimPlus on 1.0.21: use the Iceskull fork, not the original

2. ValheimPlus (Iceskull Temporary) 1.3.4, by Iceskull: the 1.0.21 ValheimPlus route. ValheimPlus is the long-running quality-of-life bundle: configurable stamina, carry weight, build range, smelter and furnace speed, crafting from nearby chests, workbench range and spawn protection, map pin sharing, and camera-shake controls, all toggled through one configuration file. The route to it on 1.0.21 is specific, and getting the package name wrong is the most common mistake in this guide. The original ValheimPlus package is deprecated and its last release was in December 2022; it does not run on 1.0. The maintained Grantapher fork is the package most guides mean, but the 1.0.21 check below did not verify it for 1.0.21. The package that did verify for 1.0.21 is the unofficial temporary fork packaged by Iceskull. Verification for 1.0.21: the Iceskull package page names Valheim build 1.0.21 as its validation build, names BepInExPack Valheim 5.4.2360 as its dependency, and states the packaged DLL passed 2,932 runtime assertions on a local Valheim 1.0.21 dedicated server with that pack. Its 1.3.4 release fixes the workbenchEnemySpawnRange setting, and it folds in Deep North additions and fixes from upstream 10.4.0.0. The page is explicit that this fork is not an official release from the ValheimPlus or Grantapher maintainers. That unofficial status is the price of a 1.0.21 pin today: you are trusting a named community maintainer's temporary build, not the upstream project. How to install: stop the game or server, back up your existing ValheimPlus configuration, and remove or disable every other ValheimPlus package and any manually installed duplicate ValheimPlus DLL. This package contains the complete plugin and replaces other ValheimPlus packages; it is not an add-on to install alongside them. Install Iceskull-ValheimPlus_Temporary with r2modman or another compatible Thunderstore mod manager, which pulls BepInEx through the declared dependency. Keep your existing BepInEx config file named org.bepinex.plugins.valheim_plus.cfg; the package ships no replacement configuration. Update the dedicated server and every client to plugin version 1.3.4, then start with the manager's Start modded option and check the BepInEx log for the line Loading Valheim Plus (Iceskull Temporary) 1.3.4. A worked example from the package page sets the base building range to 35 metres and the spawn-protection radius to 100 metres through workbenchRange and workbenchEnemySpawnRange. The setting blocks spawn positions that obey the game's PlayerBase suppression rules; it does not cancel raids or stop enemies that spawned elsewhere from walking in. Do not mix ValheimPlus with another inventory-slot mod without reading both pages: ExtraSlots, for example, disables Better Archery's quiver rather than fighting it, and ValheimPlus inventory options should stay disabled if you run ExtraSlots. That conflict is exactly why this guide lists one overhaul route, not two.

Server admins only: ValheimOne 0.13.29

ValheimOne 0.13.29, by HumanGenome, is a server-side utility package, not a first mod for a new player. It earns a note here because its 0.13.29 changelog states verification against Valheim 1.0.21, giving the dedicated-server build number 26266951 and a SupportedGameVersion of 1.0.21, and reports that all of its static references and reflection targets resolve on that build. If you already run a server utility of this kind, 0.13.29 is the 1.0.21-pinned release to check. If you are a solo player looking for gameplay changes, skip it: the two packages above are your shortlist.

Install order that avoids the usual breakage

  • Create a mod-manager profile for 1.0.21 and keep your vanilla install untouched. Never test a new package on your only copy of a world you care about.

  • Install BepInExPack Valheim 5.4.2360 alone and launch once. Confirm the console shows no red errors.

  • Add one package, launch, and play for a few minutes. Read the console for the first red error, not the last: the first failure is usually the cause, and later errors are often consequences.

  • Only then add the next package. If the game stops launching, remove the most recent addition and retest before changing anything else.

  • For multiplayer, update the server and every client to the same package versions, including BepInExPack. A version mismatch turns players away at join.

  • After any Valheim patch, assume every package is unverified again until its author page names the new build. Re-check before launching the modded profile, and keep the vanilla profile playable in the meantime.

Multiplayer rules in one paragraph

Some packages are server-side, some are client-side, and some must match on both sides. Content packages that add items, change loot, or sync configuration generally need the same version on the server and on every client. Client-only interface tweaks do not need a server copy, but the package page, not this guide, is the authority for each package. When in doubt, install the same version on both sides: an extra client copy of a server-side package rarely hurts, while a missing required copy always blocks joining. Never promise console friends they can join a modded server that requires client files; they cannot install them, and that is a platform limit, not a settings problem.

Checked but NOT on the list: re-check before you install any of these

This section is the reason this guide is short. Each package below is popular, current for the 1.0 era, and missing one thing: an author page that names Valheim 1.0.21. Installing any of them on 1.0.21 is a gamble, not a recommendation, and the pin we actually found is stated so you can judge for yourself. Original ValheimPlus, package ValheimPlus/ValheimPlus: deprecated on Thunderstore, last release 9.9.11 in December

2022. Do not install it on 1.0.21 under any name confusion. This is a hard exclusion, not a re-check item. ValheimPlus Grantapher fork, package Grantapher/ValheimPlus_Grantapher_Temporary: the fork most guides mean. The last verified pin found in this check is release 0.10.3.0, built for Valheim 1.0.20 on 16 October

2026. A later 10.4.0 page exists, but the page viewed in this check is flagged as a potentially older version and its text names no 1.0.21 target. Not verified for 1.0.21. If you want ValheimPlus on 1.0.21 today, use the Iceskull fork above, or wait for a Grantapher release that names 1.0.21.

BetterBuilding 0.14.1, by QoLTeam: its own page describes it as compatible with Valheim 1.0.16. That is two hotfix generations behind 1.0.21, so it is not verified for 1.0.21, even though it is the natural building pick for many players. Re-check its page for a newer pin before installing. PlanBuild 0.20.0, by MathiasDecrock: the planning, copying, and blueprint package. Its changelog names compatibility with Valheim 1.0.7 in release 0.18.5 and 1.0-era fixes since, including container contents captured and restored by blueprints since Valheim 1.0 in 0.19.1, but the 0.20.0 changelog text read in this check names no 1.0.21 target. Not verified for 1.0.21. Jotunn 2.30.2, by ValheimModding: the shared modding library behind many content mods. Its changelog shows 2.30.0 updating most systems for Valheim 1.0.7 and 2.30.1 fixing 1.0 build-menu categories, but no 1.0.21 pin was found in the changelog read. Jotunn is a dependency, not a gameplay pick: do not install it alone expecting new content, and re-check it before installing any Jotunn-dependent mod on 1.0.21.

EpicLoot 0.15.6, by RandyKnapp: the loot overhaul with Magic through Ancient rarities, enchanting, shardstones, and sets. Its changelog shows a Deep North-era build, with Deep North weapons and armor dropping from Deep North creatures, chests, treasure maps, and the Frozen King in 0.15.5, but the changelog read names no 1.0.21 target. Current for the 1.0 era, not verified for 1.0.21. Quick Stack Store Sort Trash Restock 1.3.1, by Goldenrevolver; PlantEverything 1.21.4 and PlantEasily 2.3.1, by Advize; ExtraSlots, by shudnal: all four are current 1.0-era builds that other 1.0 guides recommend, and ExtraSlots was updated on Thunderstore within days of this check. None of their pages read in this check names Valheim 1.0.21 explicitly, so none is on the verified list. ExtraSlots also conflicts with other inventory-slot mods: do not run it alongside Equipment and Quick Slots, AzuExtendedPlayerInventory, or another inventory overhaul. Authors who moved: some well-known authors, including Azumatt and Smoothbrain, moved to Hexium around the 1.0 launch, and their Thunderstore pages are now marked deprecated. A deprecated Thunderstore page is not a dead mod; it is a sign to look for the current build on Hexium, not to install the deprecated package and hope.

Steam community screenshot of vanilla gameplay, not a mod interface: a player in a steaming hot tub, a reminder to test one package at a time instead of changing everything at once.

How to re-check any mod in sixty seconds

Open the package's current Thunderstore page immediately before installing, and look for four things: an author release or update that explicitly names your exact game build, such as 1.0.21; an update date after the last game patch, not just after the 1.0 launch; no deprecated flag on the package; and dependency versions that match the packages you already run. A catalog listing alone proves nothing, and a 1.0 or Deep North tag from September is not a 1.0.21 claim in November. Test one package at a time on a backed-up world, and keep the author's page as the final word over any guide, including this one.

What to play first

If you only want one change, install BepInExPack and the Iceskull ValheimPlus fork, leave every ValheimPlus option at its default, and play a normal session before tuning anything. Most ValheimPlus breakage comes from turning on dozens of tweaks at once and then not knowing which one misbehaved. If you run a dedicated server, pin the server and every client to the same versions listed above, and write the versions down somewhere the whole group can see: the next Valheim hotfix will make this check necessary again, and a written version list turns that into a five-minute job instead of a guessing game.
