BG3 has 11 playable races. Every one of them can assign +2 to one ability score and +1 to another, so you are not choosing a race to unlock the ‘correct’ Strength or Charisma bonus. The useful differences are movement speed, darkvision, armour/weapon proficiencies, innate magic, defensive passives and race-specific dialogue.
Race matters through movement, traits and utility rather than fixed ability scores
That makes race a mix of mechanics and identity. A Wood Elf’s extra movement is valuable in almost every fight. A Githyanki can cover an absurd amount of skill and mobility utility. A Half-Orc is excellent at surviving and amplifying melee crits. But none of that makes the other races unplayable.

Movement is a real combat stat
Most races move 9 m per turn. Dwarves, Halflings and Gnomes move 7.5 m; Wood Elves and Wood Half-Elves move 10.5 m. That 3 m gap between a short race and a Wood Elf can decide whether you reach melee, high ground, a lever or the edge of Spirit Guardians without spending another action.
Slow movement is a cost, not a death sentence. Misty Step, Longstrider, class mobility and items can solve it. But it belongs in the decision, especially on characters whose job is to move through the battlefield rather than stand still.
Human
Humans have 9 m movement, Civil Militia weapon/armour proficiencies, an extra skill and 25% more carrying capacity. The package is not flashy, but shields and extra skill coverage can matter on classes that do not receive them naturally.
Human is best understood as convenience: no spectacular racial spell, but very little of the kit is wasted.
Elf
All Elves receive Fey Ancestry, Darkvision and Perception proficiency. High Elf adds a Wizard cantrip; the spell uses Intelligence when a casting ability matters. Wood Elf adds Stealth proficiency and 10.5 m movement, which is why it remains one of the easiest races to recommend without knowing the final build.
Drow
Drow get 24 m Superior Darkvision, Fey Ancestry, Perception and racial magic that grows into Faerie Fire and Darkness. Lolth-Sworn and Seldarine are mechanically close in combat; their largest difference is dialogue identity and some deity/story context.
If you care about Act 1 reactivity, Drow is one of the races where role-play value is unusually visible.
Half-Elf
Half-Elves combine Fey Ancestry and Darkvision with Civil Militia. High Half-Elf gets a Wizard cantrip, Wood Half-Elf gets Stealth and the excellent 10.5 m movement, and Drow Half-Elf gets a Drow-flavoured racial spell progression. They are flexible rather than specialised.
Half-Orc
Half-Orc is a clean melee choice. Relentless Endurance keeps you at 1 HP instead of going down once per Long Rest, while Savage Attacks adds an extra weapon damage die on melee critical hits. Intimidation proficiency also fits a protagonist who solves dialogue through pressure rather than charm.
Halfling
Halfling Luck rerolls a natural 1 on attacks, ability checks or saving throws, which is far more useful over a 100-hour campaign than it looks in a single tooltip. Brave improves resistance to Frightened. Lightfoot adds Stealth advantage; Strongheart improves poison resilience.
The cost is 7.5 m movement. On a backline skill character that can be fine; on a melee build that constantly chases targets, plan a mobility answer.
Dwarf
All Dwarves are slow at 7.5 m and bring poison resilience. Gold Dwarf adds 1 maximum HP per character level. Shield Dwarf adds light and medium armour proficiency. Duergar is the outlier: 24 m darkvision, strong mental/condition defenses, Enlarge at level 3 and a racial Invisibility at level
5.
Duergar Invisibility can be recast freely outside combat and once per combat, making it one of the most influential racial utility tools in the game.
Gnome
Gnome Cunning gives Advantage on Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma saving throws — a broad defensive package against many control effects. Forest Gnome gets Speak with Animals, Deep Gnome combines Superior Darkvision with Stealth advantage, and Rock Gnome has History Expertise. Again, the trade-off is 7.5 m movement.
Tiefling
Every Tiefling has Fire Resistance and Darkvision. The subrace decides the magic package: Asmodeus leans into fire and Darkness, Mephistopheles brings Mage Hand/Burning Hands/Flame Blade, and Zariel uses Thaumaturgy and smite spells.
Because your class already supplies most of your combat identity, choose the Tiefling line whose free spells fill gaps rather than duplicate the buttons you already press.
Githyanki
Githyanki is one of the densest utility packages in the game. Astral Knowledge gives proficiency in every skill tied to one chosen ability until Long Rest. Martial Prodigy adds light/medium armour and sword proficiencies. Racial Mage Hand arrives immediately, Jump at character level 3 and Misty Step at
5.
It is particularly good on classes that appreciate armour or mobility they would otherwise need to buy with a class dip or gear slot.
Dragonborn
Dragonborn choose one of ten ancestries. Each ancestry gives resistance to an element and a matching breath weapon. The breath recharges on Short Rest, begins at 2d6, increases to 3d6 at character level 6 and 4d6 at level 11; the save DC uses Constitution and proficiency.
That is better than many launch-era summaries imply. It is still more situational than Misty Step or Halfling Luck, but it is a real repeatable tool, not merely cosmetic flavour.

| If you value... | Look first at... | Reason |
|---|---|---|
Movement | Wood Elf / Wood Half-Elf | 10.5 m base speed |
Skill coverage | Githyanki / Human | Astral Knowledge or extra skill |
Melee crits + survival | Half-Orc | Savage Attacks + Relentless Endurance |
Stealth/darkness | Drow / Deep Gnome / Duergar | Darkvision, Stealth, racial magic |
Mental saves | Gnome / Duergar | Broad save/condition defenses |
Role-play reactivity | Drow / Githyanki / Tiefling / others | Unique dialogue can matter more than small combat gains |
A simple decision rule
Start with identity. If two races fit the character equally well, compare movement. Then compare defenses and utility. Only after that ask about class synergy. BG3’s flexible ability bonuses mean you rarely need to sacrifice the character concept for one point of optimization.
