Baldur's Gate 3 Shadowheart Romance Guide: Act 1 Start, Nightsong & Act 3 Endings

Guide chapters9 chapters

At the tiefling celebration, Shadowheart can invite the player to share a bottle if approval is at least 20 and the relationship slots allow it. The private rendezvous plays near a waterfall. A passive Insight check reads that she expects a kiss, but failing the check does not kill the route: the next-day conversation can acknowledge that the player wishes they had kissed her. What does end the route is treating the night as a mistake or rejecting the connection outright.

ActMust-do romance stepWhat can permanently change

Act 1

Trigger the bottle/waterfall scene: 20+ approval at tiefling party, or the 40+ “missed a chance to connect” route while still available

Calling the night a mistake / rejecting the route ends Dating; rushing romance flags can remove the alternate start.

Act 2

Bring Shadowheart into the Shadowfell and let the Nightsong decision resolve with her present

Spare Aylin → Selûnite/defy-Shar path; kill Aylin → Dark Justiciar/Sharran path. Relationship tone and Act 3 scenes diverge.

Act 3

Complete the route-specific romance scene and House of Grief progression

Selûnite swim requires the relationship plus knowing she cannot swim and sufficient approval; parents choice changes follow-up, not whether love is possible.

Act 1: the waterfall scene is the relationship start

There is a second route before later lockouts: at 40+ approval, the dialogue “I can’t help but feel like you and I might have missed a chance to connect. Truly connect.” can queue the same private scene. This is a useful recovery path if the celebration timing did not line up, but it does not remain available forever once other romance/story flags advance.

The Act 1 waterfall/bottle scene is the key Dating-stage start; failing the passive “kiss” read is recoverable.

Approval without turning the run into a checklist

Shadowheart rewards discretion, pragmatic kindness and respecting boundaries more consistently than blind obedience to Shar. You do not need to role-play a Sharran zealot. Learn her interests through camp conversations, take her privacy seriously and give her room to reach the Act 2 decision herself.

Night Orchid is an optional approval/relationship moment, not a mechanical requirement for the Selûnite swimming scene. The gift only makes sense after Shadowheart has previously told you she likes Night Orchids. Likewise, learning that she cannot swim is its own conversation flag — and that flag really does matter later.

Night Orchid is a useful approval/character moment after Shadowheart has told you she likes the flower; it is not the swim scene’s hidden key.

Camp conversations about Shadowheart’s personal interests matter because one specific fact — that she cannot swim — becomes an Act 3 scene requirement.

Act 2: do not enter the Shadowfell without her if you care about the route

The Gauntlet of Shar and Shadowfell are the relationship pivot. Bring Shadowheart. Resolving the Nightsong while excluding her can derail her personal quest and is the opposite of a safe romance plan. Inside the Shadowfell, the critical question is whether she kills or spares Dame Aylin.

If she spares Aylin, she rejects Shar and emerges emotionally shattered; the post-Shadowfell conversation can move the romance into the Partnered stage when the player confirms they want a lasting relationship. If she kills Aylin, she becomes a Dark Justiciar and tells the player that Shar takes precedence, but the relationship can continue if the player insists. These are not cosmetic versions of one romance — they create different Act 3 tone and scenes.

Act 2 is the pivot: Shadowheart’s crisis of faith and the Nightsong outcome decide which romance branch reaches Act 3.

Do you need to pass a Persuasion check to save Nightsong?

Not always. Shadowheart’s personal “Nightsong points” / memory-and-trust flags and approval can allow her to make the sparing decision without the player forcing it through a persuasion roll. The safest role-play route is to build trust across Acts 1–2 and let her decide when the dialogue presents that option. A guide that says “always roll Persuasion here” is oversimplifying the companion logic.

Act 3 Selûnite route: the swim scene has specific prerequisites

For the Selûnite romance, the relationship must already be established after Shadowheart spared Aylin. The swimming camp event additionally requires approval of at least 40 and that the player previously learned Shadowheart cannot swim. Night Orchid is not listed as a requirement. If those flags exist, she invites the player to a moonlit swim; the exact presentation changes with the game’s nudity setting.

On the Selûnite path, Act 3 relationship content continues beyond the swim and into Shadowheart’s confrontation with her past and family.

At the House of Grief, Shadowheart can save her parents or release them from Shar’s curse through death. Both outcomes can preserve a partnered romance, but the emotional follow-up differs. The saved-parents route gives her a living family to rebuild with; the sacrifice route is a grief-and-release path. Treat it as a character-ending choice, not a “right romance answer.”

House of Grief: parents live or die does not have to end the romance / Dark Justiciar route

If Shadowheart kills Aylin, she becomes a Dark Justiciar and the romance remains much more subordinate to Shar. She can stay partnered if the player insists after the Shadowfell, but Act 3 uses a darker and more strained relationship scene. Do not expect the Selûnite swimming scene on this branch.

The Dark Justiciar branch preserves a possible romance but changes its tone: Shar, not the relationship, becomes Shadowheart’s declared priority.

Safe workflow

1. Act 1: reach the waterfall scene via the tiefling celebration or 40+ alternate dialogue.

2. Talk about her interests; learn that she cannot swim. Night Orchid is optional but useful after the interest dialogue.

3. Act 2: bring Shadowheart through the Gauntlet and into the Shadowfell.

4. At Nightsong, if you want Selûnite Shadowheart, build enough trust to let her make the choice rather than treating the scene as a single Persuasion gate.

5. After leaving the Shadowfell, confirm the lasting relationship so the route becomes Partnered.

6. Act 3: trigger the appropriate Selûnite or Sharran romance content, then resolve House of Grief.

Common failure points / FAQ

  • Missing the Act 1 start and assuming Act 3 can create the romance from zero.; Resolving Nightsong without Shadowheart present.

  • Treating Night Orchid as mandatory while never learning the actual swim requirement: she cannot swim.; Saying the Act 1 night was a mistake.

  • Forcing a romance answer at Nightsong without considering her trust/memory flags.; Expecting the Selûnite swim on a Dark Justiciar route.

  • What approval do I need at the tiefling party? 20+ for the standard bottle invitation, subject to relationship-slot conditions.; Can I start later at 40+? There is an alternate “missed a chance to connect” dialogue while its lockouts have not fired.

  • Is Night Orchid required for romance? No. It is an optional approval/character moment after you learn she likes them.; What is required for the Selûnite swim? The established Selûnite romance, 40+ approval, and prior knowledge that Shadowheart cannot swim.; Can romance survive if she becomes a Dark Justiciar? Yes, if you insist on remaining with her after the Shadowfell, but the route becomes darker and different.
