Casualties: Unknown Demo Beginner's Guide: Survive Your First Descent

Your first descent in Casualties: Unknown comes down to three things: keep moving with a plan, keep eating and drinking, and treat injuries before they snowball. The demo covers the first 5 of the game's 11 floors, and this guide is written from that demo: how to pick a character, use the radial inventory, read your hunger and thirst, and get back out alive. The full game launches November 9, 2026, and may change details.

Quick answer

The demo covers the first 5 of the game's 11 floors, and this guide is written from that demo: how to pick a character, use the radial inventory, read your hunger and thirst, and get back out alive.

Before your first descent

  • The demo covers the first 5 of 11 floors. Treat it as training for the full game, not the full game.

  • Pick one of three playable characters. Each has its own attributes and traits, shown as STR, RES and INT on the health screen.

  • Your goal in the full game is to retrieve lost cargo, The Grey Planet. The demo is about learning to survive the trip down.

  • The depth meter on the right edge of the screen shows how far down you are. The caves are dark, so light and attention matter.

Your first descent, step by step

  • Open the radial inventory before you go deep. Learn where everything sits: mouth, main hand, secondary hand, and the upper, middle and lower back slots. The wheel also shows your carried weight, so check it before you pick things up.

  • Descend slowly and watch the dark. The caves are procedurally generated, so there is no fixed route to memorise. Move from lit ground to lit ground and keep track of the way back.

  • Eat and drink before the warnings pile up. Hunger and thirst are tracked systems, and the game will tell you when your character wants to eat. Food exists underground, including items such as a big flesh chunk shown in the demo.

  • Treat injuries at once, limb by limb. A wound left alone keeps costing blood, and blood loss is what ends runs. Read our medical system guide before your first serious injury, not after.

  • Pick your fights. The demo shows melee and ranged weapons, including a titanium machete and a rifle. Fighting costs health and supplies, so engage when you have a reason, not every time something moves.

The radial inventory: know your slots

Everything you carry hangs on the radial inventory wheel. The demo screenshot shows the slots clearly: mouth, main hand, secondary hand, upper back, middle back and lower back. What you hold in your hands is what you can use right now, and the wheel shows your carried weight at the top. Keep the combat pen and bandages somewhere you can reach in a hurry, because you will need them while you are still moving.

Hunger and thirst: do not wait for the warning

Hunger and thirst run through every descent, and the game warns you in plain text when your character wants to eat. Do not treat that as flavour text: a hungry character is a weaker character, and finding food takes time you may not have when you are already deep. Eat and drink while you are still safe, and carry food when you find it.

Health: your body is the inventory that matters most

The bottom-left health panel is always on screen, and the UNI-HEALTH screen shows the full picture: heart rate with a live ECG trace, blood volume, temperature, oxygen, and each limb's condition. Injuries are tracked per limb, and the screen lets you treat each one where it is. Our injury and medical system guide explains the panel, bandaging, shrapnel removal and the combat pen in detail.

FAQ

  • How much of the game is in the demo? The first 5 of 11 floors. The demo shows the core survival loop, not the full game.

  • Which character should I pick first? Any of the three works for a first run. Each has its own attributes and traits, shown as STR, RES and INT, so pick the one whose strengths fit how you want to play and learn the systems first.

  • What should I do first when I get hurt? Open the health screen, find the injured limb, and treat it right away. Blood loss keeps going while you wait, and our medical guide walks through the steps.

Bottom line: go slow, eat early, and treat injuries the moment they happen. The demo is five floors of practice for the full eleven, and the habits you build here are the ones that will carry you through the full game when it launches on November 9, 2026.
