Guide chapters8 chapters

Enshrouded drops you into Embervale, a kingdom half-swallowed by a corrupting fog called the Shroud, and asks you to do three things at once: survive, build, and push the fog back. This guide covers what the game actually is in its 1.0 state, what the review picture looks like, what your PC needs to run it well, and the concrete first steps that will keep your first days from turning into a loop of respawns.

What Enshrouded Is

Enshrouded is a survival action RPG from Keen Games. You play as a Flameborn, a survivor woken to rebuild a fallen kingdom. The loop is easy to describe and hard to put down: explore hand-crafted regions and procedurally flavored dungeons, fight enemies and bosses in and around the Shroud, gather resources, level up through a large skill tree, rescue craftspeople, and build a base voxel by voxel. There is no fixed class. Your build emerges from the skills you pick, the weapons you favor, and the armor you upgrade.

The 1.0 version launched on October 15, 2026, on PC via Steam and on PlayStation 5, including PlayStation 5 Pro support. An Xbox Series X|S version is planned for spring

2027. You can play entirely solo, or in co-op with up to 16 players on a server. Solo play is a complete experience, not a demo for multiplayer: the world, the bosses, and the building systems are all available alone, and co-op mainly changes how fast you clear content and how ambitious your base can get.

The game costs $39.99 on Steam and the PlayStation Store. A launch discount ran for 14 days after 1.0 and ended on October 29, 2026, so the standard price applies at the time of writing. The interface supports Simplified and Traditional Chinese, though there is no Chinese voice acting, and the game is Steam Deck Verified. Early Access players number more than 5 million according to Keen Games, and the 1.0 launch weekend saw a 24-hour Steam peak of about 102,491 concurrent players.

The World in Brief: Seven Regions and the Flame

Embervale is divided into seven regions that you unlock roughly in order, each with its own enemy levels and a Flame level that gates how long you can survive inside the Shroud. You start in Springlands, then move through Revelwood, the Nomad Highlands, the Kindlewastes, the Albaneve Summits, the Veilwater Basin, and finally Cinder's Cradle, the endgame region added in 1.0. The level cap in 1.0 is 50, gear goes up to level 55, and the Flame can reach level 11.

Progress is driven by story bosses. Each one you defeat, and each Flame upgrade you complete, opens the next stretch of the map. There are ten Ancient Spires that serve as fast-travel points, and six Hollow Halls dungeons to clear. You do not need to memorize this map on day one. What matters early is the rhythm: strengthen your Flame, rescue a craftsperson, upgrade your gear, then push into the next region.

What Players and Press Actually Say

A note on honesty before the numbers: this section reports the aggregate review picture and published press scores only. We are not presenting hand-picked individual player quotes, because we could not verify a representative set of individual Steam reviews for this guide, and inventing a player name, a playtime, or a quotation would be misleading. What follows is what can be checked.

On Steam, Enshrouded holds a Very Positive rating, with about 86% positive reviews out of roughly 110,000 reviews, checked on November 2,

2026. That is a strong aggregate for a survival game, and it covers both the Early Access years and the 1.0 launch, so it reflects long-term sentiment rather than a single launch weekend. Press scores on the store page include IGN at 8 out of 10, RPG Site at 8 out of 10, and Rock Paper Shotgun calling it the best building system in the survival genre.

Two post-1.0 player feedback patterns are worth knowing before you buy. Some players have reported lower frame rates after the 1.0 update, and DLSS is on by default, which some players prefer to adjust. Neither pattern changes the aggregate rating on its own, but both are practical: if performance feels off after 1.0, checking your upscaling and graphics settings is a sensible first step before assuming your hardware is at fault. There is no official mod support, so performance fixes come from settings and patches, not community mods.

PC Requirements, Interpreted

The official minimum calls for Windows 10 64-bit, an Intel Core i5-6400 or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X, 16 GB of RAM, a GeForce GTX 1060 6GB, Radeon RX 580 6GB, or Intel Arc A380, and 60 GB of storage, with an SSD recommended. The recommended spec raises the CPU to an i7-8700 or Ryzen 7 2700X and the GPU to an RTX 2070 Super 6GB, RX 6700 XT 6GB, or Arc A770, with the rest unchanged. Those numbers tell a clear story about what actually matters.

What mattersWhat it means for you

16 GB of RAM

Non-negotiable in practice. Both minimum and recommended ask for it, and open-world survival games punish machines that fall short with stuttering.

6 GB of VRAM

Every listed GPU, minimum and recommended alike, carries 6 GB or more. Treat 6 GB as the floor, not a nice-to-have.

An SSD

Listed as recommended, but effectively required for a smooth experience in a large voxel world with frequent loading.

CPU generation

The jump from minimum to recommended is modest, so a mid-range modern CPU is fine. Do not overspend here before fixing RAM, VRAM, or storage.

In plain terms: if you have 16 GB of RAM, a 6 GB graphics card, and the game installed on an SSD, you are in the intended experience. If you are short on any one of those three, upgrade that first. A newer CPU helps, but it will not rescue a machine with too little RAM or a hard drive install.

Value Hardware Picks

The picks below name product tiers and well-known products only. Prices and purchase links are added separately by our editor after verification, so nothing here should be read as a current price or a buy link. The logic is simple: spend where Enshrouded actually stresses your system, and do not overspend where it does not.

  • Graphics card, mid-range tier: a current mid-range GPU in the class of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 or AMD Radeon RX 7600 is the sensible target for smooth 1080p play. You do not need a flagship card for this game.

  • Memory: 16 GB is the floor, and a 32 GB kit is the comfortable upgrade if you multitask or run a server alongside the game.

  • Storage: a SATA SSD such as the Samsung 870 EVO class is enough, and an NVMe drive in the class of the WD Black SN850X is the faster option. Either beats a hard drive by a wide margin.

  • Controller: the Xbox Wireless Controller is the natural pick on PC, and the PlayStation DualSense Controller works well too if you already own one. Enshrouded plays fine on mouse and keyboard, so a controller is comfort, not a requirement.

  • Headset: a comfortable mid-range headset in the class of the HyperX Cloud Alpha or SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7 covers long sessions and co-op voice chat without flagship cost.

Quick Answers

  • Can I play solo? Yes. Solo is complete, and co-op supports up to 16 players.

  • Is there a fixed class? No. One connected skill tree covers warrior, ranger, and mage styles, and you can reset at a Flame Altar.

  • What if I die in the Shroud? You respawn, but the Shroud limits your time inside, so treat every Shroud trip as a timed run.

  • Do Early Access saves carry over? Yes, but loading one in 1.0 for the first time resets your skill tree and refunds all points, and custom key bindings return to defaults.

  • Is there cross-play between PC and PlayStation 5? Not at the 1.0 launch. Keen Games has said it is in progress.

Your First Steps Checklist

  • Place your Flame Altar and treat it as home: respawn, crafting hub, and skill reset point.

  • Gather wood, stone, and plant fiber, then build a workbench and basic tools before your first long trip.

  • Build a small enclosed shelter with a roof, a bed, and storage before nightfall on day one.

  • Follow the early quest line toward your first Ancient Spire to unlock fast travel.

  • Rescue the Blacksmith, Oswald Anders, as your first survivor priority: he unlocks weapon and armor upgrades.

  • Strengthen your Flame before pushing into a new region, and never enter the Shroud without a way back.
