Guide chapters11 chapters

Enshrouded's story is a journey across Embervale, and the Flame Altar is the key that opens it. You start in the Springlands, raise your Flame by defeating story bosses and recovering relics, and each new Flame level lets you survive deeper Shroud and colder, harsher regions, until you finally reach Cinder's Cradle in the far north. This guide lays out the seven regions in story order, the enemy levels you will meet, the Flame level each region expects, and what each step unlocks, without spoiling quest solutions step by step.

How progression works: the Flame gates everything

Almost everything in Enshrouded's story runs through the Flame Altar at your base. Upgrading it raises your Shroud survival and your Shroud Passage level, which is what lets you enter areas that would otherwise drain you too fast or shut you out entirely. From the second upgrade onward, each Flame level needs a specific story boss head, plus regional materials and rescued Survivors, with one important exception near the end of the story that needs a relic instead of a boss fight. That is why the boss order and the region order are really the same road: beat the right boss, raise the Flame, and the next region opens.

Two habits will save you a lot of backtracking. First, do not rush into a new region the moment it becomes survivable: clear its Elixir Wells and Shroud Roots, rescue its Survivors, and climb its Ancient Spire first, because those systems feed skill points, recipes, and fast travel that make the next region far easier. Second, keep spare boss heads when you can. Heads spent on a Flame upgrade are gone, and the Hunter can turn extra heads into wall trophies, so handing over your only copy can cost you a display later.

The gaps between regions matter as much as the numbers. Jumping from the Springlands into Revelwood, or from the Kindlewastes into the Albaneve Summits, is a real gear and level check, not just a walk across a border. If ordinary enemies in a new region are taking very long to kill or are hitting far harder than what you faced before, you are probably under-levelled or under-geared for that step, and the fix is usually to finish the previous region properly: upgrade gear through the right Survivor, spend skill points, and clear Elixir Wells for the rewards and experience they give.

1. Springlands: learn the loop (Flame 1 to 2)

The Springlands is where you wake, build your first base, place your first Flame Altar, and meet the first Survivors. Enemies here run from level 3 to 9, which makes it the training ground for combat, gathering, crafting, and the Shroud itself. The story work here is about foundations: rescuing the Blacksmith, Carpenter, and other early Survivors, clearing your first Elixir Well, and climbing your first Ancient Spire. Nothing here demands an endgame build, but skipping the basics here will follow you for the whole game, because gear upgrades and recipes all run through the Survivors you rescue.

2. Revelwood and Blackmire: the Flame reaches 3

Revelwood, with the Blackmire area inside it, is the first real step up, with enemies from level 11 to 15 and Flame level 3 as its marker. The forest is denser, the Shroud pockets are nastier, and the story pushes you toward the fallen capital of Pikemead's Reach. This is also where the Flame-gating pattern becomes obvious: the story boss of this region carries the head that takes the Flame from level 3 to 4, so the region does not truly end until that fight is done. Blackmire has its own atmosphere and content, but it does not carry its own set of region achievements, so treat it as part of the Revelwood stretch rather than a separate chapter.

3. Nomad Highlands: Flame 4

The Nomad Highlands, at enemy levels 16 to 20 and Flame level 4, opens the map eastward into drier, more open ground. The story boss here waits at the Cradle of Dusk, and its head carries the Flame from level 4 to

5. By this point the game expects you to be comfortable with gliding, grappling, and fighting inside the Shroud on a timer, and to have a gear set that matches your build rather than whatever you happened to find. If you are still wearing a mixed bag of early gear, this is the region where that starts to hurt.

4. Kindlewastes: Flame 5

The Kindlewastes is a desert region at enemy levels 21 to 27 and Flame level 5, and it is where the story's haunted, sun-baked side comes to the front. The story boss here is tied to the Haunted Sun Temple, and its head moves the Flame from level 5 to

6. Desert travel rewards preparation: carry what you need, use fast travel from the region's Ancient Spire once you have it, and do not assume a fight you could win in the Highlands will play the same way here, because enemy density and Shroud placement are less forgiving.

5. Albaneve Summits: Flame 6, then 7 opens the rest

The Albaneve Summits is the first region with a split gate. You enter at Flame level 6 with enemies from level 28 to 35, and reaching Flame level 7 opens the rest of the region. That split matters for planning: the first half teaches you the cold, the heights, and the Elixir Well boss that guards the next upgrade, while the second half holds the dragon fight at Howling Peak that carries the Flame from level 7 to

8. Two story bosses live in this one region, which is why it feels longer and harder than the regions before it. Cold protection and strong ranged options are worth sorting out before you commit to its peaks.

6. Veilwater Basin: Flame 8, then 9 opens the rest

The Veilwater Basin repeats the split-gate pattern at a higher pitch: enter at Flame level 8 with enemies from level 37 to 45, and reach Flame level 9 to open the rest. Its story boss is the Drak leader Hydrak'Dal, whose head moves the Flame from level 8 to

9. After that comes the story's one non-boss gate, and it is worth understanding clearly: the step from Flame 9 to 10 does not need a boss head at all. It needs the Broken Guard Of The North Crown relic, recovered through the Crown Of Sorrow quest in the Cromville Throne Room. Players who keep hunting for a boss to unlock Cinder's Cradle will stall here for no reason; the relic is the key.

7. Cinder's Cradle: the endgame (Flame 10)

Cinder's Cradle, added in the 1.0 release, is the northern endgame region beyond Veilwater Basin, with enemies from level 46 to 50 and Flame level 10 as its entry requirement. Below are lava lowlands, above are the floating Sky Islands, and at the top sits the Ancient Citadel where the story ends. The level cap in 1.0 is 50 and the highest gear tier is 55, so this is where your build should be complete rather than still coming together. The final boss, Vorgoth, waits in the Mother Flame's Domicile inside the Ancient Citadel, and defeating his two forms raises the Flame to its final level,

11. A fuller guide to this region, including what to do after the ending, is covered in our Cinder's Cradle guide.

What to do if you feel stuck

  • Check your Flame level against the region you are entering: a region that feels punishing is often simply one Flame tier too early.

  • Clear the previous region's Elixir Wells and Shroud Roots for skill points and rewards before pushing on.

  • Upgrade gear through the matching Survivor: Blacksmith for warrior gear, Hunter for ranger gear, Alchemist for mage gear.

  • Climb the region's Ancient Spire early: fast travel and revealed landmarks cut travel time for everything after.

  • If a boss keeps beating you, change the approach before grinding levels: range, positioning, and Shroud time management often matter more than a few extra levels.

A character gliding over the open world of Embervale in Enshrouded

The story road is long, but it is never mysterious about what it wants from you. Your Journal points at the next boss or relic, your Flame Altar tells you exactly what the next upgrade needs, and the map tells you, through enemy levels and Shroud depth, whether you are ready. Follow those three signals in order, region by region, and Embervale opens one gate at a time until there is nowhere left to go but up, into the Sky Islands and the final fight.
