What is Final Fantasy Resonance?
Rain and Lasswell are knights of the Kingdom of Grandshelt. When the Earth Crystal shatters, they set out across the world of Lapis to protect the remaining crystals. Fina, a young woman with no memory who emerges from a crystal, joins them. The story follows the first arc of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, rebuilt with new scenarios, HD-2D exploration, and a new battle system. There is no gacha and no live-service grind. It is a one-time purchase, single-player RPG.
Is it worth playing? Yes, if you want a classic Final Fantasy. Critics praised the HD-2D presentation, the Stagger combat, and the Vision build system. The story itself divides opinion: some reviewers call it predictable, others call it a warm return to the series roots. The free demo answers the question for you in a few hours, and your progress carries over, so there is no reason to buy before trying it.
Where to start
Play in this order. New players should start with the demo and Chapter
1. Boss trouble comes later, so read the boss guide when a fight stops you, not before.
Step 1: Play the free Chapter 1 demo. Your save carries over to the full game.
Step 2: Follow the Chapter 1 walkthrough for the Earth Shrine, your first Visions, and the first Esper.
Step 3: When a boss blocks you, check the boss weaknesses and Visions guide for that fight.
Visions: the build system
Visions are crystallized wills of heroes from across Final Fantasy history. Cloud, Terra, Tidus, Lightning, Clive, and the Warrior of Light appear as Visions you equip to your party members. They do not replace a character. They add skills, passives, and a signature Resonance attack to that character.
There are 26 Visions in total. Most are found in Sanctums of Light hidden around the world, and some come from story scenes and side content. Equip a Vision, win battles to raise its Mastery Rank, and your character learns its abilities. A learned ability stays equippable under a different Vision, as long as the loadout stays inside its cost limit. Fully mastering a Vision can grant strong passives. Mix and match: there are no fixed jobs, so build each character around the fight in front of you.
Stagger, Sweeping Stagger, and Resonance attacks
Combat is turn-based with a timeline across the top of the screen showing the action order. Every enemy has a health bar and a Stagger Gauge under it. Hitting an enemy weakness deals extra damage and much more stagger damage. Drain the gauge and the enemy loses its turn while its defense drops. The character who triggers the stagger gets a bonus action.
Stagger every enemy on the field in the same turn and you trigger a Sweeping Stagger. The whole party acts again, one after another, and the sequence ends with a Resonance attack: the equipped Vision's signature move. The practical rule is simple. Buff the turn before the sweep, spend your biggest skills and Limit Bursts during the extra actions, and finish with the Resonance attack.
Espers return as classic summons. Siren is the first Esper, earned through the story in Chapter
1. Others, such as Ifrit, Shiva, Titan, and Ramuh, come from trials found around the world. There are 9 Espers in total.
The 8 chapters
The main story runs 8 chapters, from the Earth Shrine to the Crystal Tower. The airship opens up in Chapter 5 and turns the game into full free exploration. After the credits, a clear save returns you to just before the final boss with the whole world open for cleanup.
