A note on sources before the detail: the game itself confirms five employees and the 1.0 arrival of the Mycologist. The individual skill names and the strength talk below come from player community sources, not from an official skill list, so treat them as the community picture rather than a developer statement.

Wrangler: the cowboy

Wrangler in the hub, cowboy hat and all.

Wrangler is the cowboy of the crew, and the lasso is the point of the character. According to player community sources, his named skills are Eyes Up Here, Dust Kick and Tuck'n'Roll. He also has a dedicated achievement: Yeehawwwww! asks you to lasso another player as Wrangler, which is the clearest in-game proof that the lasso is meant to be used on teammates as well as enemies.

Bruiser: the tank

Bruiser is the tank of the crew, according to player community sources. That is the honest extent of what this guide can say about him: the community material available for this article does not give a verified skill list for Bruiser, and this guide will not invent one. If you want a character whose job is obvious from the first mission, the tank is the safe pick; if you want the full skill tree, that is a gap, listed at the end of this article.

Scrapper: jetpack and a pole for the whole team

Scrapper brings a jetpack and, more unusually, a grapple pole the whole team can use. According to player community sources, the pole lets teammates swing around it, which ties directly to the Swinger achievement: swing around a grapple pole for its full duration without touching the ground. Scrapper's named skill in community sources is Eye in the Sky.

Glider: flight and healing rockets

A winged employee in the hub.

Glider flies and fires healing rockets, according to player community sources. The loadout screens in this guide show the winged employee with exactly that kind of kit, and the loadout screen itself labels the character GLIDER. Flight changes how you cross a mission area, and healing rockets mean Glider can patch up a crew without standing next to it.

Two loadout views of the same character show how much the outfit can change while the wings stay unmistakable. The loadout screen also carries a Switch Employee button, so changing characters is a menu action, not a new save.

Mycologist: how to unlock her

The Mycologist is the 1.0 newcomer, and she is not simply picked from the roster at the start. According to player community sources, which agree on the sequence, the unlock runs through a special mission in the hub.

  • In the HUB, pick the Expedition Alpha special mission.

  • Fight the floating Boss.

  • Focus fire to blow open one side of its shell.

  • Break the pink core exposed inside.

  • She lands. Walk up to her and use the Switch Employee interaction.

  • That unlocks her as a playable employee.

The unlock achievement matches the mission name: Expedition Alpha, for rescuing the Mycologist. If the mission is not showing, check that you are looking in the hub mission list rather than the standard mission board, and that your game is on the 1.0 build, since she did not exist before it.

Mycologist: three skills and the infection risk

  • Passive Infection: builds up when she is hurt or uses movement skills. Higher infection makes her skills stronger, but too much infection lowers her maximum HP.

  • Sporelift: hold jump to rise. A longer charge means a higher jump, and it also adds infection.

  • Fungal Skewer: fungal spikes grow from the ground to pin enemies. It can consume infection for more damage.

The kit is a trade, not a free bonus. Every tool that makes her stronger also feeds the meter that can cut her health ceiling, so the skill is in deciding when to spend infection and when to let it sit. According to player community sources, she also has 30 or more employee-specific upgrades, so her build space is not a small side list.

Between missions you return to the orbital-ship hub, where the SAXON veteran Roachard Cox hangs around. The hub is also where the Expedition Alpha unlock starts, so it pays to know the place before you go looking for the fifth employee.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to finish the game before unlocking the Mycologist?

No such requirement appears in the community unlock steps quoted here. The steps are: pick Expedition Alpha in the hub, beat the floating Boss by breaking one shell side and then the pink core, and use the Switch Employee interaction when she lands.

Is Glider really the best employee?

That is a community view, not a verdict: community sources call Glider strongest early and Wrangler strongest late, and say all four original employees hold up at high threat levels. Try both before you settle.

Can I change employees after picking one?

Yes. The loadout screen carries a Switch Employee option, as shown in the screenshots in this guide, so changing characters does not need a new save.

What is not covered here?

Full skill trees for Bruiser, Scrapper and Glider are not verified in the sources used for this article, and neither are complete per-employee upgrade lists beyond the Mycologist count of 30 or more. Those are stated gaps, not things this guide quietly skipped.

If you only remember one thing: unlock the Mycologist through Expedition Alpha, then learn the infection trade before you build around her, because the meter that powers her skills is also the one that can cut her health.
