Build 42 firearms are stronger as a system, not just as individual weapons. The ammunition rework, new guns, refreshed loot distributions, firearm jamming and the new aiming model mean that a good gun loadout is an ecosystem: weapon, caliber, magazine, spare ammo, condition, aiming skill and an escape route for the noise you create.
Quick answer
Build 42.20 added the JS-14 (5.56×45, 20-round magazine), JS-3T Tactical Shotgun (12 Gauge), L92 (.357 Magnum), L94 (.30-30), MSR7T (7.62×51) and Trapper Carbine (.45 ACP).
The Trapper Carbine shares .45 ACP ammo and magazines with the 1911, which can simplify loadout logistics.
Current Apocalypse tuning includes firearm jamming; inspect condition, carry the correct magazine/ammo and keep a melee backup.

| New gun | Caliber / feed | Role note |
|---|---|---|
JS-14 Rifle | 5.56×45mm / 20-round magazine | Light civilian/police rifle; robust but not famous for accuracy |
JS-3T Tactical Shotgun | 12 Gauge / higher-capacity tube | Police/military close-range heavy firepower |
L92 Carbine | .357 Magnum | Handy lever-action carbine |
L94 Rifle | .30-30 | Classic hunting/ranch rifle |
MSR7T Tactical Rifle | 7.62×51mm | Bulky precision police/military rifle |
Trapper Carbine | .45 ACP / shares 1911 mags | Compact mid-range carbine; less reliable |
Build a gun loadout around ammunition compatibility
The 42.14 ammunition rework and 42.15 firearm expansion were designed around more coherent ammo types and cross-compatibility. A gun that shares ammunition or magazines with a sidearm can be worth more than a theoretically stronger gun that needs a completely separate supply chain.
Before leaving base, check caliber, loaded magazine, spare magazines and loose ammo. Finding boxes of the wrong caliber in a police building does not rescue a rifle that cannot use them.
Choose the firearm by job
Shotguns are strong close-area control tools and can train firearm skills quickly, but the noise footprint is enormous. Carbines fit mobile mid-range use. Hunting/tactical rifles reward deliberate distance and aim stability. Pistols are compact backup weapons but do not become “quiet” just because they are smaller.
Use the weapon whose role matches the route. A shotgun for a tiny residential loot run may create more zombies than the loot is worth.
Condition and jamming matter
Current Apocalypse tuning explicitly enables firearm jamming. Inspect weapon condition before committing to a large operation, and do not wait until a crowd reaches the doorway to discover a failure state.
Carry a quiet melee backup. The best gun plan assumes you will eventually need to finish one zombie without firing another loud shot.
Loot locations are distributions, not guarantees
Build 42 reworked firearm distribution to better separate civilian, police and military use. Police stations can favor police/security types, civilian hunting locations can support lever/hunting guns, and hard military/security locations can carry tactical gear—but sandbox loot settings still matter.
Plan a location for its category and access, not because an old screenshot promised a specific gun on a specific shelf.

| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
Gun will not load | Confirm caliber, magazine type and whether the magazine itself needs filling. |
Gun jams repeatedly | Check condition and current weapon reliability; keep space to clear the failure. |
One shooting trip attracts too many zombies | Use fewer shots, choose a different route/weapon role and leave before the noise trail closes. |
FAQ
What new firearms matter most in Build 42.20?
Six highlighted additions are JS-14, JS-3T, L92, L94, MSR7T and Trapper Carbine.
Does the Trapper Carbine share magazines with a pistol?
Yes. Official notes say it shares .45 ACP ammo and magazines with the 1911.
Are guns guaranteed at police stations?
No. Loot distributions and sandbox settings affect the exact result.
