Start with the four no-magazine targets
Open Vehicle Mechanics on wrecks and strip battery, radio and headlights first. These current 42.20.4 templates list no Mechanics level or Laines recipe requirement. At Mechanics 1, add tires with a jack and lug wrench.
This is why parking lots and junk vehicles are better training grounds than your only good car. You can make mistakes without risking daily transport.
Rotate vehicles because success XP is keyed
Current Mechanics success XP uses a unique key tied to vehicle, part and action. Repeating the same successful battery action on the same sedan forever does not behave like an infinite loop. Move to the next wreck, then come back when other useful actions are available.
Failed install or uninstall attempts currently award 1 Mechanics XP. Treat that as incidental progress, not a reason to intentionally use impossible parts.

Level toward a vehicle goal

Use the skill target that matches your campaign: hotwire, tire service, reliable repairs, or full fleet maintenance. Once that target is met, spend daylight on fuel, routes and spare vehicles instead of grinding for its own sake.
