Project Zomboid Tailoring Guide (Build 42.20.4): Thread, Patches and Fast Leveling

Guide chapters11 chapters

Build 42 changed the old Tailoring muscle memory. Ripping clothes no longer showers you with free thread, and several “Shorten” actions are material conversions rather than XP farms. The clean route is: loot starter thread/twine plus a needle or awl, use an XP-bearing level-0 sew to reach Tailoring 1, unlock Pick Thread, then patch real clothing while skill books multiply the work.

Quick answer

  • Tailoring 0→1: Sew Rag Bandana gives 8 base XP; level 1 needs 75 base XP.

  • Pick Thread unlocks at Tailoring 1 and converts Ripped Sheets or Denim Strips into single-use Thread; Pick Thread itself gives no Tailoring XP.

  • Patch Hole / Add Padding consumes fabric + one thread use + needle and awards 2 base Tailoring XP per completed sew.

0→1

Sew Rag Bandana

8 base XP; requires starter Thread/Twine + Needle/Awl

Pick Thread for sustainable thread

0 XP; destroys a strip to create one-use thread

Patch Hole / Add Padding

2 base XP per completed sew

8+

Late-game repair value; use good material carefully

The real Tailoring 0→1 problem is starter thread

At skill 0, do not expect ripped clothing to bootstrap your thread loop. Current Build 42 rules require you to loot Thread or Twine first. With a Needle or Awl, two Ripped Sheets and one thread/twine use, Sew Rag Bandana gives 8 base Tailoring XP.

Shorten trousers, sleeves, skirts or socks can still produce useful materials, but current 42.20.4 guidance does not treat those actions as Tailoring XP. Use them as a rag factory, not a leveling plan.

Tailoring 1 unlocks the sustainable loop

Once Tailoring reaches 1, Pick Thread can destroy one Ripped Sheet or Denim Strip using a Needle, Tweezers or Awl and create a one-use Thread. The action itself gives no Tailoring XP, but it removes the biggest early material bottleneck.

From there, ordinary scavenged clothing becomes a renewable input for real patching instead of relying entirely on sewing-kit spools.

Patch holes and pad intact clothing

Right-click clothing and open Inspect. A torn body-part tile offers Patch Hole; an intact covered tile can offer Add Padding. Each completed sew uses a fabric strip and one thread use and commonly grants 2 Tailoring XP before book multipliers.

Cotton/ripped sheets are cheap training material, denim is a stronger middle tier, and leather is valuable protective material. Do not grind away your best leather when cotton can train the same basic action.

Re-sew important gear as skill rises

Patch defense is determined when you sew it. A weak early patch does not automatically become a max-skill patch when Tailoring later reaches

10. On clothing you actually rely on, consider removing and re-sewing old low-skill padding after your skill improves.

At Tailoring 8+, matching-fabric repairs can fully restore holes under current Build 42 rules. This is where Tailoring turns from “XP hobby” into real long-run equipment maintenance.

ProblemFix

Cannot start Tailoring at level 0

Loot starter Thread/Twine plus Needle/Awl; Pick Thread is not available until level 1.

Shorten recipes give no XP

Use them only for material conversion; Sew Rag Bandana is a real 0→1 XP route.

Good leather disappearing too fast

Train on cotton/rags and reserve leather for final protective layers.
