Steam Next Fest opens its October 2026 edition today, October 19, at 10:00am PDT (01:00 on October 20 in Beijing), and runs until October 26 at 10:00am PDT. Hundreds of free demos go live across the week, and a useful slice can already be downloaded and played this morning, before the festival page itself switches on.

Start here: the demos already live
Two survival demos have been sitting on Steam since the press preview opened on October
8. Keelblade, from Digital Confectioners in New Zealand, is a pirate RPG built for crews of one to six, with ship combat and shore fights; its full release is listed for
2027. Arctic Drive sends one to four players on a road-trip survival run through the far north (Pebbles Games and PlayTogether Studio, Bonus Stage Publishing), and its full game is dated November 25,
2026. Both demos are free and were confirmed live on their Steam pages this morning.
The strongest solo pick of the early batch comes from Shanghai. Chess of the Hidden Gates, from AgentGameLab, rebuilds Chinese chess movement as a mythology-soaked roguelike deckbuilder: pieces move by their chess rules, and cards decide what they do when they arrive. Its demo has been playable since August 2, a single run takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes, and the full game is due in Q4
2026. Two more demos quietly beat the opening gun. Inside Job, a one-to-four-player prison escape game from Rafiq Studios with a separate two-to-ten-player mode called LAST COUNT, released its demo on October
9. Never Wither went up on October 14, ahead of the October 20 date given in earlier preview coverage; its demo covers one region, Verdant Valley, with 19 creature species and 4 bosses.
Opening day: Frostrail runs the headline slot
The largest demo of the week arrives with the opening itself. Frostrail is a first-person survival game built around a steam train crossing a frozen, corrupted wasteland, playable solo or in co-op for up to four. It comes from FakeFish, the Finnish team behind Barotrauma, and publisher Shiro Unlimited, and it carries the biggest numbers in this preview: more than 70,000 closed-beta players and over 500,000 wishlists. Its Steam page lists the full game for Q4 2026, and the demo is set to go live during the October 19 to 26 festival window.
Three more confirmed arrivals share the opening day. Loftia, a cosy MMO-style life game from Qloud Games, opens its demo on October 19 and carries a rare practical bonus: progress made in the demo carries into the Early Access launch, which Steam dates to November
3. Never Be Alone, an open-world zombie survival game from Beast Studios, has its demo dated October 19 on Steam and its full release set for December
8. Meltdown Crew, a co-op game set around a 1980s reactor for up to six players, also dates its demo to October
19. One caution: the new No Mortal Space demo at the fest will not load saves from its older demo, so returning players start fresh.
How the week works, and one delay to know
Valve allows each game to take part in one Next Fest only, so a demo you skip this week may not return in February, and many demos are pulled from the store when the fest ends on October
26. The fest page sorts participants by genre and by what your library suggests you might like. One listed co-op title also changed plans during the run-up: We Are So Cooked, the multiplayer game about carrying a body to the exit, has slipped to a 2027 release so it can launch with multiple maps, according to preview coverage of the co-op lineup. Its demo still appears at the fest.
Our take
Spend today on the demos that are already live, and let the opening-day crowd fight over Frostrail bandwidth. Keelblade and Arctic Drive have been downloadable for eleven days, Chess of the Hidden Gates is the most original half hour in this preview, and Inside Job suits any group that can fill a voice channel tonight. Save one slot for Loftia: a demo that keeps your progress is the only one this week whose hours are guaranteed to count later. Frostrail still deserves its headline status, because a co-op train survival game from the Barotrauma team, carrying half a million wishlists, is exactly the kind of release this festival exists to surface. Play it on day one or day six, but play it during the fest: after October 26, the demo may be gone.
