Best Weapons in Baldur's Gate 3: Top Picks by Act and Build

Guide chapters6 chapters

A “best weapons” list becomes misleading when it compares a thrown trident to a Charisma staff or a finesse support sword as if all three were competing for one slot. Baldur’s Gate 3 rewards engines: Titanstring is exceptional when Strength is deliberately added to an archer; Phalar Aluve is exceptional when the party profits from Shriek/Sing; Markoheshkir is a caster tool, not a melee stat stick; Nyrulna is a throw build endpoint, not a reason for every Fighter to drop a two-hander.

There is no single best weapon — there are weapons that multiply the build you already have

The practical way to use this page is by Act and job. Ask what the character is trying to do, whether the item is missable, and whether another party member benefits more. Legendary colour is not a substitute for synergy.

Phalar Aluve is a support/finesse weapon whose value comes from its melody effects, not its raw 1d8 weapon die.

WeaponBest fitWhy it matters / Miss risk / route note

Everburn Blade

Early STR two-hander

Large early damage package from the Nautiloid before normal +1/+2 weapons are common. / Must obtain from Commander Zhalk in the prologue; later weapons can replace it quickly.

Phalar Aluve

Support Bard/Cleric/finesse user

Sing/Shriek party aura can amplify team accuracy/damage patterns. / Underdark stone; easy to miss if you rush Mountain Pass.

Titanstring Bow

STR + DEX archer

Adds Strength modifier to weapon damage, enabling giant-elixir/club/STR archer engines. / Zhentarim-related vendor route / later fallback; strongest only when STR is deliberately supplied.

Knife of the Undermountain King

Crit/off-hand/finesse builds

Crit threshold / reroll-style utility supports multi-hit or crit packages. / Crèche trader; buy before hostile progression.

Blood of Lathander

Cleric/support frontliner

+3 mace, Sunbeam, revive-like safety passive, anti-undead/fiend light. / Rosymorn/Crèche puzzle; see G32.

Everburn Blade is a spectacular prologue spike, but “early best” does not mean “keep forever.”

Act 2 — utility and action economy start beating raw damage

WeaponBest fit / Why it stays relevant

Halberd of Vigilance

Polearm STR frontliner / Strong enchantment, initiative/awareness package and reach; excellent when going early matters.

Drakethroat Glaive

Any weapon build that wants an external buff tool / Draconic Elemental Weapon can buff another weapon; often valuable even when the glaive is not your final main hand.

Shar’s Spear of Evening

Darkness / Sharran / piercing setups / Powerful route-locked spear from the Dark Justiciar Nightsong branch.

Selûne’s Spear of Night

Selûnite / support spear route / Alternative Nightsong branch reward with its own utility package.

Moonlight Glaive

Shadowheart/Aylin route bridge / Useful story-linked polearm and Radiant utility before final Act 3 upgrades.

Halberd of Vigilance is valuable because initiative and reliable weapon quality solve more turns than a slightly larger damage die.

Drakethroat Glaive can be more valuable as a buffing tool for another weapon than as the weapon you attack with all day.

Act 3 — endpoint weapons are build-specific

WeaponBest build / What makes it an endpoint

Balduran’s Giantslayer

High-STR great-weapon Fighter/Paladin/Barbarian / Premium two-handed Strength endpoint and giant-target utility.

Nyrulna

Throw Barbarian / Tavern Brawler thrower / Returning legendary trident with explosive/thunder throw package and mobility utility.

Gontr Mael

Dex archer / High-end bow with celestial/utility package; clean alternative to maintaining Titanstring STR setup.

The Dead Shot

Accuracy/crit archer / Excellent hit/crit-focused bow when Sharpshooter reliability matters.

Duellist’s Prerogative

Rapier duelist / Swashbuckler-like setup / Single-weapon finesse package with reaction/duel synergies.

Markoheshkir

Wizard/Sorcerer/Cleric caster / Spell DC/attack, Arcane Battery and Kereska’s Favour; not a martial weapon despite legendary rarity.

Gontr Mael is a bow endpoint for an archer who values a complete utility package over Titanstring’s Strength-specific engine.

Markoheshkir belongs on caster shortlists because of spell DC, Arcane Battery and elemental Kereska’s Favour — not weapon damage.

Question | If yes, prioritise

Does the build make many attacks? | On-hit riders, crit thresholds, accuracy and damage added per hit scale harder.

Does the build throw instead of make melee attacks? | Returning / throw-specific weapons and Tavern Brawler-compatible mechanics.

Is Sharpshooter/GWM reducing accuracy? | Weapon enchantment, Advantage/accuracy and initiative can beat one more small damage rider.

Does the whole party benefit? | Aura/support weapons such as Phalar can outperform personal DPR.

Is the weapon only a buff source? | Treat Drakethroat/utility pieces as setup tools; main hand can be something else.

Is the item route-locked? | Compare story cost before labeling the weapon “mandatory.”

Vendor and quest miss risks / How to choose between two “best” weapons / Common mistakes

  • Buy crèche vendor items before turning the area permanently hostile.; Zhentarim/Titanstring availability depends on route/vendor state; do not postpone the purchase indefinitely.

  • Nightsong spear rewards are mutually exclusive story branches, not two items you normally collect in one run.; Several Act 3 best-in-slot items are tied to optional bosses/quests; the build should function before the endpoint.

  • Do not kill a vendor for one weapon unless you have checked everything else that vendor or faction gates.; Ranking Markoheshkir against Balduran’s Giantslayer in one universal DPS tier.

  • Calling Titanstring “best bow” while running 8 Strength and no Strength support.; Keeping Everburn forever because it looked legendary in the prologue.

  • Using Drakethroat as the attacking weapon when the real value is buffing another weapon.; Treating route-locked Sharran/Selûnite rewards as simultaneously obtainable.

FAQ

  • What is the best Act 1 weapon? Depends on build: Everburn for immediate two-handed damage, Phalar for support, Titanstring for STR-enabled archery, Blood of Lathander for Cleric/support.

  • What is the best bow? Titanstring for a deliberate STR engine; Dead Shot/Gontr Mael are cleaner universal Act 3 endpoints.

  • What is the best throwing weapon? Nyrulna is the iconic Act 3 endpoint, with earlier returning/throw-specific options carrying the build before it.

  • Is legendary always best? No. A rare item that multiplies the build engine can beat a legendary with irrelevant passives.
