Patch 8 added official Photo Mode. On PC press F9; on controller/console press both analog sticks, or use the Photo Mode icon beside the minimap. During normal exploration and combat you can move the camera, adjust party members, poses and expressions, change lens/scene settings, then apply post-processing, frames and stickers. During dialogue/cinematics, the camera and character-position tools are restricted by design: post-processing, frames and stickers remain available, but you cannot treat a cinematic like a free-camera scene.
Quick answer: F9 on PC, both analog sticks on controller — but dialogue Photo Mode is intentionally restricted
In multiplayer only the host can enable Photo Mode. That makes the host the “photographer” for coordinated party shots even when the other players own the characters.
Patch 8 exposes Photo Mode through keybind/controller shortcuts and the HUD rather than requiring a free-camera mod.
How to open Photo Mode
Swipe horizontally to view all columns.
| Input | Shortcut / action / Note |
|---|---|
Keyboard / mouse | F9 / Default PC shortcut; can also click the HUD Photo Mode icon. |
Controller / console | Press both analog sticks / Works on supported controller/console layouts. |
Multiplayer | Host activates Photo Mode / Only the host can enable the mode for the session. |
Dialogue / cinematic | Same entry if the scene permits / Only post-processing, frames and stickers are available; no free camera / character repositioning. |
The six tool groups
Swipe horizontally to view all columns.
| Tool group | Useful controls |
|---|---|
Camera | Free camera, focus and framing controls for choosing the angle. |
Lens / depth of field | Field of view up to 115°, aperture around f/1–f/22, focus distance up to ~30 m / Use shallow depth of field for portraits without blurring the main subject. |
Character settings | Expression, look-at-camera, pose, per-character placement and rotation / Pose only the subjects that need adjustment. |
Post-processing | Exposure/brightness/contrast/saturation/highlights/vignette-style controls / Adjust the scene without crushing important details. |
Frames | Frame and bar overlays for the final composition. |
Stickers | Up to 30 per picture from a library of 300+ at Patch 8 launch / Decorative elements for character and campaign shots. |
The Photo Mode interface is organized into six functional tabs: camera, lens, character/scene controls, post-processing, frames and stickers. You do not need every tab for every screenshot. Camera, lens and one careful character adjustment usually matter more than a heavy filter stack.
Set the camera and composition before spending time on filters; bad geometry cannot be fixed by saturation.
Lens controls change field of view and depth of field; keep the main subject readable.
Character posing without making every shot look staged
1. Freeze the exact combat/exploration moment you want before moving the camera.
2. Compose the frame first.
3. Adjust only the characters who look wrong in the frame.
4. Use expression / look-at-camera sparingly; every companion staring at the lens can look artificial.
5. Check weapons, capes, corpses and spell VFX for clipping.
6. Apply post-processing last.
Character controls can adjust pose/expression and placement; use them to fix a composition, not to force every companion into a studio pose.
Photo Mode is especially good for companion/camp photography because individual subjects can be posed after the scene is frozen.
When Photo Mode is opened in dialogue/cinematics, free camera and character relocation are intentionally disabled. You can still use post-processing effects, frames and stickers. Use these moments for close-up grading or presentation; if you need a completely different angle, reproduce the subject in controllable exploration/combat space instead of fighting the cinematic camera.
If the folder looks empty, confirm you actually used the in-game Photo Mode capture rather than only the platform/Steam screenshot shortcut, then check the corresponding platform gallery or Larian screenshot directory.
Dialogue and cinematic restrictions are not a bug / Where screenshots are saved
Swipe horizontally to view all columns.
| Platform | Current in-game screenshot location |
|---|---|
Windows | C:\Users\[username]\Documents\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\Screenshots |
Mac | ~/Pictures/Larian Studios/Baldur's Gate 3/Screenshots |
PlayStation / Xbox | Platform media capture/gallery system |
Common issues and fixes
If Photo Mode is unavailable, exit the restricted interaction or cinematic and return to normal control. Camera movement is intentionally disabled during dialogue; multiplayer Photo Mode can only be opened by the host. If the screenshot folder is empty, confirm that you used the in-game capture button, then check the platform gallery or the game screenshot directory.
