Baldur's Gate 3 Honour Mode Guide: Rules, Legendary Actions & Run Strategy

Honour Mode combines one rolling save with Tactician-style enemy numbers, encounter-specific Legendary Actions, stricter action economy and a set of anti-exploit damage/rule changes. When the party is wiped, you can end the campaign or continue the same run in Custom Mode — but continuing ends Honour Mode and forfeits the Honour completion reward for that run. The goal is therefore not “never make a mistake.

The goal is therefore not “never make a mistake.” It is to build a campaign where one mistake does not automatically become a full-party wipe.

Honour Mode is a different ruleset, not Tactician with permadeath

The most important mental shift is redundancy. One character scouts while ungrouped. One party member carries an escape tool. Bosses are Examined before burst starts. Consumables are used before they become dead inventory. A run that retreats from a bad pull is healthier than a run that dies with twelve Invisibility potions in the bag.

Honour Mode is selected as its own ruleset. Its one-save structure matters, but the combat rule changes are equally important.

RuleHonour Mode behaviorWhy it matters

Save structure

One rolling campaign save; wipe can continue in Custom but ends Honour eligibility

No loading a pre-fight save to erase a bad boss pull.

Legendary Actions

Many bosses gain encounter-specific reactions/actions

Read the tooltip before your first attack; some trigger when attacked or when adds die.

Haste / Bloodlust extra Action

Extra Action does not receive normal Extra Attack chain

A martial with Extra Attack usually gets one attack from the Haste/Bloodlust Action.

Action Surge

Extra Action still works with Extra Attack

Fighter burst remains unusually reliable.

Pact of the Blade Deepened Pact

Does not stack with martial Extra Attack

Old “3 attacks per Action” Lockadin math from Tactician does not carry into Honour.

Camp supplies

Full Rest uses Tactician/Honour high-cost rules: 80 supplies at standard Honour settings

Food economy matters early if you rest after every trivial fight.

Haste still grants an extra Action, but Honour limits that Action to one attack instead of another full Extra Attack chain.

The boss rule: inspect first, attack second

Legendary Actions are designed to punish automatic openers. A boss may retaliate after being attacked, summon/empower allies, change phase when a condition is met, or gain a resource from the arena. The correct first Honour action is often Examine, not Fireball. Read the Legendary Action, check whether it is once per round, check what triggers it, then decide who is allowed to trigger it and when.

Inquisitor W’wargaz is an early lesson that Honour bosses can punish the party for doing what was safe on Balanced/Tactician.

Even familiar Act 1 bosses such as the Owlbear gain Honour-specific Legendary Actions and encounter pressure.

Build a party with four different failure-recovery jobs

Swipe horizontally to view all columns.

JobWhat it means / Examples

Fast opener

Acts before dangerous enemies and applies control/burst / High DEX, Alert, initiative gear, surprise when appropriate.

Control / denial

Removes enemy turns rather than racing HP / Command, Hold, prone, blindness, terrain, counterspell, silence depending encounter.

Sustain / reset

Can stand allies up and stabilise a bad round / Healing Word, potions, Sanctuary, Aid/Heroes’ Feast, defensive reactions.

Escape / insurance

Can leave when the fight is lost / Invisibility, Misty Step, Dimension Door, high movement, Sanctuary, disengage route.

A party can combine jobs on one character, but it should not have four glass-cannon builds whose only plan is “win initiative and delete the room.” Eventually a boss survives. Honour is won by the turn after the perfect opener fails.

Initiative is campaign insurance

BG3 uses a d4-based initiative roll, so small bonuses are extremely influential. Alert, Dexterity and initiative gear can turn “sometimes first” into “almost always first.” Acting first is not only more damage: it lets you spread before an AoE, close doors, cast Sanctuary, counter a channel, apply Wet/control, or flee before the enemy converts the pull into a wipe.

Long Rest discipline: rest often enough to be strong, not so often that you ignore resource logistics

Honour uses the high camp-supply cost associated with Tactician rules: a standard Full Rest consumes 80 Camp Supplies. That is not a reason to enter bosses at half resources. It is a reason to loot food, buy camp supplies when convenient, use Short Rests intelligently and understand which classes reload on Short Rest. Partial Rest is not a full substitute: it restores only part of the party resources.

Act-by-act risk map

ActTypical run killersPreparation rule

Act 1

Low level HP, W’wargaz/Owlbear/Grym-style Legendary mechanics, accidental faction aggro, cliffs

Scout ungrouped, delay optional bosses until the party has the level/gear plan, carry Invisibility/escape tools.

Act 2

Shadow Curse logistics, Moonrise/Shadowfell cutoff, Yurgir/Ketheric/Myrcul spikes

Resolve vendors/prisoners before cutoff; enter colony/final chain fully rested; keep anti-control/necrotic/radiant plan appropriate to boss.

Act 3

Optional superbosses, multi-phase fights, scripted arenas, Netherbrain timer/last fight

Use the city as preparation time: buy consumables, finish gear, pre-buff responsibly, learn each Legendary Action before pull.

Consumables are supposed to disappear from inventory / Friends, theft and “harmless” dialogue magic can end a run

  • Elixir: choose the one that fixes the build’s weakest axis for the day; do not overwrite it casually.

  • Potion of Speed / Haste: still excellent, but calculate the Honour Action correctly and plan for Lethargic.

  • Invisibility: an escape tool is worth more than a dead character holding six potions.

  • Scrolls: Counterspell-like answers are class-bound, but high-level damage/control scrolls let non-casters or slot-starved casters solve specific turns.

  • Arrows: Many Targets, slaying/control arrows and elemental arrows can solve geometry that a normal attack cannot.

  • Smokepowder / explosives: powerful but risky around allies and story NPCs; Honour is not the place for untested barrel placement.

A fight is lost before everyone is down / Boss examples: what the screenshots are trying to teach

Create a retreat threshold. If the opener fails, two characters are controlled, a boss enters an unknown second phase and the party has no clean action economy left, stop “trying one more damage turn.” Sanctuary the runner, use Invisibility, Misty Step or Dimension Door, leave combat, resurrect at Withers and return with a better plan. Honour rewards knowing when the current instance of a fight is no longer worth saving.

High difficulty changes how social shortcuts feel. Charm/Friends-style effects and theft can create hostility when they end or when witnesses catch the action. Honour’s save structure means a merchant turning an entire hub hostile is not a five-second reload. Separate the thief from the party, use escape routes, know the attitude/hostility consequences, and do not cast social magic on everyone simply because the tooltip gives Advantage.

W’wargaz teaches that attacking can trigger a Legendary response. Owlbear teaches that early familiar encounters can add new Honour-only actions/add pressure. Act 3 bosses may tie Legendary Actions to arena objects, souls, conditions or allies. The goal is not to memorize thirty boss scripts before starting, but to make “Examine before burst” a permanent habit.

Final stretch: Netherbrain and the cost of arriving unprepared / Golden Dice and Foehammer — what actually counts

The finale is not the time to discover that your entire plan depends on one concentration spell, one damage type or one character who can be stunned. Preserve high-value scrolls and potions for the final sequence, understand which allies/summons are expendable, and enter the last arena with a clear plan for movement, portal timing and damage windows.

Late Honour encounters punish tunnel vision: arena mechanics, timers and conditions matter as much as the enemy HP bar.

Completing the game in Honour Mode awards the Foehammer achievement and the Shining Honour golden d20 skin. If a party wipe occurs and you choose to continue that campaign in Custom Mode, the run is no longer Honour Mode and no longer qualifies for the Honour completion reward. Continuing can still be useful for learning; it simply is not the same completion state.

Shining Honour is the golden d20 skin awarded for completing the game in Honour Mode.

Ten rules for a first Honour clear

1. Inspect every boss before the first attack.

2. Ungroup the scout before entering unknown rooms.

3. Keep one escape character/tool available.

4. Enter bosses rested; camp supplies are cheaper than a dead campaign.

5. Manage Haste/Bloodlust using Honour action rules, not Tactician memory.

6. Do not build around Pact-of-Blade Extra Attack stacking.

7. Use Initiative/Alert to prevent enemy turns, not only increase DPR.

8. Spend scrolls, arrows, elixirs and potions when they materially reduce risk.

9. Respect environmental kills: elevators, chasms, lava and moving platforms do not care about your build tier.

10. Retreat when the fight state is bad enough that continuing only compounds risk.

Common mistakes / FAQ

  • Copying a Tactician build video and assuming Haste grants a second full Extra Attack chain.; Never using consumables because they are “for later.”

  • Walking into a Legendary boss without reading the Legendary Action.; Running the whole party linked through traps/cliffs/elevators.

  • Long-resting too little because 80 supplies “feels expensive.”; Continuing after a wipe and later expecting the golden dice reward anyway.

  • Can you continue after an Honour wipe? Yes, in Custom Mode; that ends Honour eligibility for the run.; Does Haste give full Extra Attack in Honour? No — the Haste/Bloodlust extra Action does not receive the normal Extra Attack chain.

  • Does Action Surge still get Extra Attack? Yes.; Does Pact of the Blade Extra Attack stack with martial Extra Attack? Not in Honour.

  • How many camp supplies per Full Rest? Standard Honour uses the Tactician-style 80-supply cost.; What do you get for completing Honour? Foehammer achievement and the Shining Honour golden d20 skin.
