Baldur's Gate 3 Nightsong Guide: Spare or Kill, Shadowheart & Consequences

Guide chapters7 chapters

The Nightsong is Dame Aylin, an immortal aasimar tied to Ketheric Thorm’s immortality. With Shadowheart present, this scene is the biggest Act 2 fork in her personal story. Sparing Aylin moves Shadowheart away from Shar, preserves Aylin as an ally and keeps the Act 3 Nightsong continuation open. Killing Aylin makes Shadowheart a Dark Justiciar, removes Aylin, gives the Sharran reward route and causes Last Light Inn to lose Isobel’s protection and fall to the shadow curse.

Spoiler answer: the Nightsong is Dame Aylin, and this is a Shadowheart state check as much as a dialogue choice

There is no single dialogue button that always produces the same result. Shadowheart has normal approval plus a hidden Nightsong Point system. Your menu and whether “trust her” works depend on those states.

The reveal in the Shadowfell turns a “find the Nightsong” quest into Shadowheart’s major Act 2 identity decision.

Before the conversation

  • Bring Shadowheart if you care about her story outcome. Resolving the Nightsong without her can cause a severe companion reaction / departure path.

  • Have completed the Gauntlet and obtained the Spear of Night for her route.

  • Understand that the Shadowfell itself was already a point of no return; this choice then changes Shadowheart, Last Light and Act 3 content.; If you want to compare outcomes, make a manual save before entering the Shadowfell, not after downstream flags have changed.

How approval and Nightsong Points actually work

Shadowheart can accumulate six hidden Nightsong Points in Acts 1–2. Four or more unlock extra doubt-related state/dialogue, but points are not a simple “4 points = she always spares Aylin” counter. Normal approval is decisive at the final scene.

That is why two players can click what looks like the same “trust Shadowheart” line and report different results. The stable advice is to build real approval through the first two acts and treat Nightsong Points as additional doubt/story state — not a replacement for approval.

State at Nightsong sceneTrigger and outcome

Approval 40+

Several hands-off options can spare Aylin without a skill check, including “This is your choice” / saying nothing in the relevant branches.

Approval below 40

Shadowheart normally kills Aylin unless one of the available Persuasion checks succeeds.

Approval 20–39 + 4+ Nightsong Points

A bug can remove the persuasion checks and leave only kill outcomes.

Explicit kill-support dialogue

Can force the kill route regardless of approval/points.

Shadowheart’s dialogue menu can differ by hidden Nightsong Points and approval; do not assume an old screenshot is a universal script.

Spare Aylin — what changes

  • Dame Aylin is freed and participates in the later fight against Ketheric.

  • Shadowheart breaks from Shar’s path and enters her Selûnite / self-discovery route.

  • Shadowheart receives Moonlight Glaive immediately; after Ketheric and later camp dialogue, Selûne’s Spear of Night becomes part of the route.

  • Last Light is not automatically destroyed by this choice; its survival still depends on what happened to Isobel and other events in your run.

  • Find the Nightsong continues into Act 3 through Lorroakan / Sorcerous Sundries.

Selûne’s Spear of Night belongs to the spared-Aylin / Selûnite branch after the later Act 2 follow-up.

Kill Aylin — what changes

  • Shadowheart becomes a Dark Justiciar / remains on the Sharran path.

  • Dame Aylin is permanently lost as an ally.

  • Shadowheart receives Shar’s Spear of Evening through the Dark Justiciar route.

  • Isobel can no longer sustain Last Light’s protection as a consequence of Aylin’s death; the inn falls to the shadow curse and many connected NPC outcomes disappear.

  • Aylin’s Act 3 Lorroakan continuation is gone, and Shadowheart’s Act 3 personal/romance tone follows the Sharran branch.

Shar’s Spear of Evening is the signature weapon reward of the kill / Dark Justiciar path.

The Dark Justiciar route changes Shadowheart visually and narratively; it is not just a weapon swap.

Last Light contains many NPCs and quest lines, so the kill route is a world-state choice, not only a Shadowheart gear choice.

ChoiceShadowheartLast LightAct 3 / major reward lane

Spare Aylin

Breaks from Shar / Selûnite route

Not destroyed by this choice

Aylin ally; Moonlight Glaive; later Selûne’s Spear; Lorroakan continuation.

Kill Aylin

Dark Justiciar / Sharran route

Falls to shadow curse from loss of protection

Shar’s Spear of Evening; no Aylin ally; different Shadowheart continuation.

The player can handle Aylin without Shadowheart, but that does not make Shadowheart’s personal quest neutral. If Shadowheart learns that the party resolved her defining Sharran objective without her, the relationship/companion outcome can break severely. Treat “leave Shadowheart at camp and decide for her” as its own route, not as an easy way to bypass the approval system.

This is not a combat optimisation decision in the normal sense. The bigger Honour risk is entering the Shadowfell before finishing Moonrise and Act 2 resources, then discovering the world state is locked. The actual choice should follow the route you want. Do not destroy an entire quest hub for a weapon passive you only saw in a build video without understanding the campaign consequence.

Common mistakes / Honour Mode / practical note / FAQ

  • Assuming “4 Nightsong Points” automatically means Shadowheart spares Aylin.; Following a fixed dialogue screenshot without checking Shadowheart approval.

  • Leaving Shadowheart behind while expecting her personal quest to continue normally.; Treating Shar’s Spear vs Selûne’s Spear as the only consequence and ignoring Last Light / Act 3.

  • Entering the Shadowfell before finishing Moonrise and then trying to fix the result at the Nightsong conversation.; Can Shadowheart spare Aylin without a Persuasion check? Yes at sufficiently high approval in documented hands-off dialogue branches.

  • Do 4 Nightsong Points guarantee the spare route? No. Approval and current dialogue-state logic still matter; the 20–39 approval + 4-point range even has a documented likely bug.; What happens to Last Light if Aylin dies? Its protection collapses and the inn falls to the shadow curse.

  • Do you get different spears? Yes: the kill/Dark Justiciar route leads to Shar’s Spear of Evening; the spared-Aylin route can later lead to Selûne’s Spear of Night.; Does Aylin matter in Act 3? Yes if spared; her story continues with Lorroakan.
