Baldur's Gate 3 Gauntlet of Shar Guide: Trials, Umbral Gems & Spear of Night

Guide chapters11 chapters

The Gauntlet of Shar is the route to Ketheric’s relic and the Shadowfell. The trials themselves are recoverable. The final Shadowfell portal is not a casual dungeon door: crossing it is a major Act 2 cutoff that closes Act 1 access and resolves many unfinished quests. Visit Moonrise Towers as a social/infiltration area first, finish prisoner/vendor/companion business, and only enter the Shadowfell when the journal is clean enough for the run you want.

Before you enter: the dangerous mistake is not failing a trial — it is entering the Shadowfell too early

Normal completion uses four Umbral Gems. Three come from Soft-Step, Self-Same and Faith-Leap. The fourth is in Yurgir’s area. If Shadowheart is present, the Silent Library and Spear of Night are part of her route before the final descent; arriving at the Shadowfell without handling that setup can derail her companion outcome.

The Gauntlet is a dungeon with a real exit gate at the end. Treat the Shadowfell warning as an Act 2 release checklist, not flavour text.

GemWhereMain risk

#1

Soft-Step Trial

Getting spotted by shadow sentries / dragging the whole party through.

#2

Self-Same Trial

Fighting shadow copies with your own classes and abilities.

#3

Faith-Leap Trial

Falling from the invisible route / bad auto-pathing.

#4

Yurgir’s area

Quest/companion consequences around Raphael and Yurgir; the gem itself is near his bed of corpses.

Soft-Step Trial: solve it like a stealth room, not a four-person escort mission

Offer blood at the trial bowl, then send one stealthy character through the maze while the rest wait outside or at the entrance. Lockpicking, disarming, hiding and route reading are the point of the room. The cleanest run avoids making three low-Stealth companions follow the scout into every sight cone.

Soft-Step is easier when one stealth specialist handles the route instead of dragging the entire linked party through sentry vision.

Self-Same Trial: your party is the boss mechanic

Starting Self-Same spawns shadow copies of the active party members with broadly matching abilities. That means your own build decisions can come back at you: a high-burst martial or control caster is now an enemy problem. Buff before the blood offering when useful, spread before the copies open, and focus the most dangerous mirror first.

Old walkthrough advice often says each hero must only hit their own copy. Current versions still revolve around mirrors, but the practical priority is to avoid letting copied high-impact abilities free-cast. Inspect the copies, control line of sight and finish the room rather than assuming a single “pair everyone perfectly” rule is the whole encounter.

Self-Same copies the party. The threat is not puzzle text — it is fighting your own strongest actions and spell lists.

Start Self-Same only after the party has been positioned and any long-duration buffs you actually need are ready.

Faith-Leap Trial: use the route reference, not auto-pathing

Faith-Leap is a chasm with an invisible safe route between platforms. The path reference is shown at the start of the room. Ungroup the party and send one character. Do not click the far altar and trust automatic pathing across an invisible maze. Move in short steps using the floor reference and platform alignment, or use carefully tested teleport/pre-position approaches if your current client permits them.

Teleport shortcuts can change across patches. The stable route is still: one character, route reference, deliberate movement, no linked-party auto-path.

Yurgir and the fourth gem

The fourth Umbral Gem is in Yurgir’s area near his bed of corpses. You can fight him, engage with Raphael’s contract/Lyrthindor route, use dialogue outcomes, or steal/retrieve the gem depending on your plan. If Astarion’s Raphael deal is active, helping Yurgir instead of satisfying Raphael can change Astarion’s companion reaction, so this is not a loot room isolated from the rest of Act 2.

Yurgir’s wing contains the fourth Umbral Gem, but the encounter also intersects Raphael and Astarion’s quest state.

Silent Library: get the Spear of Night before the final Shadowfell route

The Silent Library sits on the lower level near the trials. Clear the room, solve the library’s central riddle and retrieve the Spear of Night. If Shadowheart is travelling with you, treat this as required companion preparation before the Shadowfell decision. Keep the Spear in active party inventory rather than leaving it in camp and discovering the problem at the portal.

The Spear of Night is Shadowheart’s key Gauntlet item. Get it before committing to the Shadowfell descent.

CheckpointReady before Shadowfell?

Moonrise Towers visited while still a social hub

Yes — strongly recommended.

Tiefling/Wulbren prisoner rescues you care about

Complete before cutoff.

Four Umbral Gems

Yes for normal route.

Spear of Night with Shadowheart present

Yes.

Act 1 cleanup

Finish anything you still want; Act 1 access closes.

Long Rest / resources / companion conversations

Recommended before the point of no return.

Normal gem use is one at the first pedestal/lift and the remaining three at the lower altar to open the final route. Patch 8 specifically fixed a bug that could award the wrong number of Umbral Gems, but older saves/mods can still create edge cases. If a gem count looks wrong, audit inventory/camp containers and each trial/Yurgir pickup before assuming the run is blocked.

Lift safety note / Honour Mode notes

The trial lift can kill party members because of a texture or positioning bug. Ungroup, move characters individually onto the platform, and keep them away from the edge instead of trusting the linked party to stack correctly. This simple precaution can prevent a needless single-save loss.

Common mistakes

  • The Shadowfell cutoff is more important than any trial difficulty. Buy gear, finish Moonrise social content and clear rescue objectives first.

  • Ungroup for Faith-Leap and for moving platforms. Environmental deaths are harder to recover from than combat mistakes.; Yurgir can become a difficult fight depending on dialogue and positioning; do not arrive with a half-spent party because “it is just the gem room.”

  • Self-Same copies the party’s dangerous tools. Enter with a plan for whichever companion would be worst to fight.; Counting three trial gems and forgetting Yurgir’s fourth.

  • Entering Shadowfell before ever visiting Moonrise Towers.; Leaving the Spear of Night in camp with Shadowheart present.

  • Auto-pathing all four characters through Faith-Leap.; Letting the moving platform carry linked party members while someone is standing on the edge.

FAQ

  • How many Umbral Gems do I need? Four for the normal route: three trials plus Yurgir.

  • Do the three trials need a fixed order? No.

  • Where is the fourth gem? Yurgir’s area, near his bed of corpses.

  • Is the Silent Library optional? For a generic party it is separate dungeon content; with Shadowheart’s route, treat the Spear of Night as required preparation.; What is the real point of no return? Entering the Shadowfell from the end of the Gauntlet.
