Baldur's Gate 3 Blood of Lathander Guide: Crest, Puzzle & Safe Route

Guide chapters9 chapters

The clean route is: solve the Dawnmaster stained-glass weapon puzzle in Rosymorn Monastery → take the Dawnmaster's Crest → finish the crèche/Inquisitor route → rotate the two Lathander statues → cross the three trapped barrier sections → insert the Crest into the final altar → take the Blood of Lathander. Using the Crest disables the defence system and skips the four-turn monastery-destruction emergency.

Quick route: get the Crest first, then the legendary mace is almost risk-free

You can steal the mace without the Crest, but that starts the solar lance. The party then has four turns to escape the monastery or destroy all four Lathander Solar Machines. That route is legitimate, but it is not the “fast version” of the puzzle — it replaces one safe item interaction with a timed rescue/destruction sequence.

At the final altar, insert the Dawnmaster’s Crest before taking the mace if you want the safe route.

Step 1 — Dawnmaster’s Crest: solve the weapon puzzle or use the DC 30 shortcut

The stained-glass room has four Dawnmaster altars. The Ceremonial Longsword is already in place. Put the correct weapon type on the other three altars: Warhammer for Dawnmaster Seed, Mace for Stockhold and Battleaxe for Vaseid. The ceremonial versions are thematic, not mechanically mandatory — any longsword, mace, warhammer or battleaxe works when placed on the correct altar.

AltarRequired weapon typeCeremonial source

Welkinglory (north-west)

Longsword

Already in place.

Vaseid (south-west)

Battleaxe

Guardian of Faith room.

Seed (north-east)

Warhammer

Giant eagle nest on the monastery roof.

Stockhold (south-east)

Mace

Kobold Looter in the monastery.

A passive DC 10 Perception check can reveal the hidden Crest compartment. A DC 30 Sleight of Hand lockpick can open it without finishing the weapon arrangement. The shortcut gets the Crest, but the intended puzzle route also awards Morninglord’s Radiance, so the “skip” is not strictly better.

The stained-glass floor shows the Dawnmasters and their weapon associations; ordinary weapons of the correct type can substitute for the ceremonial versions.

Step 2 — Reach the secret chamber behind the Inquisitor area

After progressing through Crèche Y’llek to the Inquisitor’s Chambers, find the two Lathander statues. Rotate the southern statue west and the northern statue east. The southern statue can require a passive DC 25 Athletics check; if it refuses to turn, Grease or direct damage can free it. The wall opens and reveals the route toward the Secret Stairway.

The two Lathander statues open the hidden route: southern statue west, northern statue east.

Step 3 — Three barriers, three energy sources, and the Dawnbreaker knockback traps

The secret corridor is blocked by three barriers, each powered by a nearby Energy Source. Destroy the source to drop its barrier. The dangerous part is not the small trap damage; the Dawnbreakers can knock a character about 20 m toward the chasm. Enter Turn-Based Mode, keep the party spread, and disarm a Dawnbreaker with a DC 14 Sleight of Hand check when you can reach it safely.

The first source can be shot from the south side. Later sources require moving around rocks or attacking from an angle; tracking projectiles such as Magic Missile or a flying summon can simplify awkward sight lines. Do not move the whole grouped party onto a narrow ledge and then discover the next trap by trial and error.

Each magical barrier has a separate Energy Source. Destroying the source is the route forward; brute-forcing the barrier is not.

Step 4 — Take the Blood of Lathander safely

1. Reach the final altar without pulling the mace.

2. Interact with the Crest slot in the altar mechanism.

3. Insert Dawnmaster’s Crest.

4. Take the Blood of Lathander. The defence sequence is disabled, so the party can leave normally.

The reward is a +3 legendary mace with Sunbeam, Lathander’s Blessing and a light aura that pressures nearby fiends and undead.

What if you take it without the Crest?

Stealing the mace arms the Lathander Solar Machines and starts a four-turn countdown. The character who took the mace begins trapped behind the forcefield. You must free that character and either leave the destruction zone before time expires or destroy all four Solar Machines to stop the weapon.

Taking the mace without the Crest activates the Solar Machines and turns the reward into a four-turn emergency.

The item is especially comfortable going into Act 2 because so much content involves undead and the Shadow Curse. One warning: the light can affect neutral undead and potentially make them hostile, so the toggle is not always “leave on forever.”

FeatureCurrent effect / value

+3 mace

Reliable enchantment on a one-handed legendary weapon.

Sunbeam

Once per Long Rest, cast as a level-6 spell.

Lathander's Blessing

Once per Long Rest, dropping to 0 HP triggers self-healing and nearby-party healing.

Lathander's Light

6 m holy light; fiends/undead in combat can be Blinded on a failed DC 14 Constitution save; also helps against the Shadow Curse.

Common mistakes / Honour Mode notes

  • Thinking the ceremonial weapons are mandatory when an ordinary weapon of the correct type works.; Leaving the crèche after the Inquisitor and never checking the western secret route.

  • Selling or sending the Crest somewhere inaccessible before reaching the final altar.; Running the trapped corridor with the whole party linked and getting multiple characters knocked into the chasm.; Taking the mace first, then reading what the Crest does while the four-turn timer is already running.

  • Misty Step, Dimension Door and other movement tools can get the trapped character out quickly.; Destroying the forcefield’s energy source is another escape option.

  • If all four Solar Machines are destroyed in time, the lance stops and the monastery survives.; If the countdown finishes, the monastery/crèche is destroyed. Treat this as a deliberate alternate route, not an accidental “oops.”; The Crest route is the obvious reliability choice: it converts a timed environmental emergency into a normal loot interaction.

  • Ungroup in the trapped corridor. One bad knockback should not remove the entire party.; Do not rely on Lathander’s Blessing to save a character shoved into a chasm; forced displacement into a chasm bypasses the intended 0-HP rescue use.; If you deliberately trigger the lance, prepare the exact movement route before taking the item.

FAQ

  • Do I need the ceremonial weapons? No. Ordinary weapons of the same required types work on the correct altars.

  • Can I skip the Dawnmaster puzzle? Yes: a Perception check can reveal the hidden chamber and a DC 30 lock can be picked.

  • Which way do the statues face? Southern statue west, northern statue east.

  • How long is the trap timer without the Crest? Four turns.; Can I stop the monastery explosion? Yes — use the Crest, or after triggering the trap destroy all four Solar Machines / escape in time.
