Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown, the first paid expansion for Pearl Abyss’s open-world action RPG, arrives on October 29 for $24.99. The price buys a new ocean to sail, a new storyline for each of the three leads, and a set of systems — housing, businesses, marriage — that reach past the main quest, which is why Pearl Abyss is presenting it as an expansion rather than a content pack.
At a glance
Launches October 29, 2026, at $24.99, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on Steam and the Epic Games Store. The base game is required.
Unlock times: October 29 at 3:00 p.m. PT / 6:00 p.m. ET / 10:00 p.m. UTC / 11:00 p.m. CET, and October 30 at 7:00 a.m. KST/JST.
Delayed from October 15: Pearl Abyss announced the move on September 30, citing more time for polish.
Pre-order bonus: the Charter’s Diving Set for Kliff and Oongka, plus the Charter’s Light Diving Set for Damiane.
Free Twitch Drops run in two weeks: week one starts with the launch on October 29, week two starts November 5 and requires the expansion.
An ocean, not just more quests
The expansion continues the stories of Kliff, Damiane, and Oongka as each forges a path of their own, meeting allies and threats old and new. The new region is the Great Ocean of Pywel, with a storyline of its own: players unlock shipbuilding, gather resources to construct a vessel, customize it, and sail to islands off the coast, where they defeat enemy forces and establish strongholds alongside their Greymane comrades.
Below the surface, new underwater traversal leads to sunken ruins, treasure, and resources, and the new stories range from an ominous presence in the desert and a dangerous political conflict to a journey beyond time and an ancient secret beneath the waves. The ocean is the headline because it changes where the game takes place, not just what happens in places players already know.
The systems that change daily life in Pywel
The upgraded housing mode lets players design a home from the ground up, placing walls, windows, and structural elements where they choose. After the main story, three castles can be liberated, claimed, and decorated inside and out, turning endgame progress into something visible. It is a different kind of reward from a stronger weapon: a place that shows what the player has done.
Businesses work the same way. Once a region is liberated, players can rent and run facilities across Pywel — a restaurant in Vellua, a smithy at Zargan Tankworks — assigning comrades and equipment, choosing which goods to sell, and growing each business’s recognition and profits. Alongside that, earning the trust of certain characters can lead to romance and marriage, with close companions visiting the Greymane Camp, and the Garden of Trials sends bosses from across the journey at the player one after another once the main questline is cleared, with special rewards for finishing it.
What the $24.99 does and does not buy
No edition of the base game includes the expansion: Standard ($69.99), Deluxe ($79.99), and the physical Collector’s Edition all pay $24.99 more, as does a buyer of the $12.99 Deluxe Pack. Steam sells no bundle of the base game and the expansion, so a new player should budget for both. The free Crimson Desert Enhanced update of August 25 is a separate thing — a free update for every owner — and buying the expansion is not required to receive it.
Two caveats deserve plain statements. Pearl Abyss says the expansion will not be on the Mac App Store at launch, and that it has been withdrawn from some regions after an age-rating review, with pre-orders there closed and refunded. Pearl Abyss also says further details will come in patch notes on release day, which is the right place to check before buying if any of those caveats affect the player.
Free items first, paid expansion second
The Twitch Drops event is the expansion’s free front door. In week one, starting October 29, watching eligible streams unlocks items usable in the base game: ten Braised Meat and a Pirate Lantern at one hour, a Pirate Eyepatch and a Pirate Sword at two hours, and a Pet Parrot and a Parrot Pirate Hat at three hours. Week two, starting November 5, unlocks ship parts — a Medium Fair Wind Figurehead, Stern, and Sail at one, two, and three hours — and those require the expansion, since shipbuilding is what it adds. Watching requires a Twitch account linked to a Pearl Abyss account.
Pre-order only if the diving sets matter, since they are the one thing that cannot be picked up later. Everyone else loses nothing by waiting for the release-day patch notes and the first launch impressions, and players who have not finished the main story should know that the castles and the Garden of Trials sit behind it. The ocean, at least, is open to anyone who buys in.
