Cyberpunk 2077 Returning Player Guide: What Changed Since You Left

If you left Cyberpunk 2077 before 2.0, you are returning to a different game. If you left after Phantom Liberty, Update 2.5 is the reason to come back. This guide sorts the changes by era, tells you what to do first, and warns you what not to redo.

Returning to Cyberpunk 2077 in 2026 depends entirely on when you left. Left before Update 2.0 (September

2023) and you return to rebuilt skill trees, a rebuilt cyberware system, a new police system, and vehicle combat. Left after Phantom Liberty (September

2023) and the game you know is mostly intact, with Update 2.5 (October 22,

2026) adding dual-wield pistols, Glamdoc hand-cyberware customization, cross-platform mods, and two new quests on top. Either way, your story progress carries over; the systems around it may not feel familiar.

Quick answers

  • Your old save loads into 2.5. Your character, story progress, and gear come with you; your perk builds may not survive the 2.0 rebuild intact.

  • If you left before 2.0, relearn perks and cyberware first. Those two systems changed the most.

  • If you left after Phantom Liberty, go straight to the 2.5 content: dual-wield, Glamdoc shops, and the two new quests.

  • Attribute points are still permanent; perk points can be reset with Tabula E-Rasa, at a cost. Fix perks freely, live with attributes.

  • Do not restart just to see 2.5. The new content is available to existing characters.

At a glance

  • Big rebuild: Update 2.0 (September 2023)

  • Expansion: Phantom Liberty (September 26, 2023), Dogtown district

  • Regular prices: base $59.99; Ultimate $69.99; Phantom Liberty $29.99 standalone

Before 2.0 (pre-September 2023)

Skill trees, cyberware, police, and vehicle combat all rebuilt; perks work differently

Relearn perks and cyberware before any hard fight

After 2.0, before Phantom Liberty

Base systems familiar; Dogtown and its story are new to you

After Phantom Liberty

Only 2.5 is new: dual-wield, Glamdoc, mods, two quests, radio, outfits, DLSS 4.5

Try the 2.5 features in order: quests, Glamdoc, dual-wield

The 2.0 rebuild is the dividing line. Before it, cyberware capacity, skill progression, and police response worked one way; after it, they work another, and a build tuned for the old systems will feel wrong even if the character screen looks similar. The Phantom Liberty expansion is the second dividing line: Dogtown is a self-contained district and story, and it is the only part of the game that requires the expansion. Everything in Update 2.5, including the two new quests, is part of the free update to the base game.

2. Your old save: what survives and what does not

Story progress, your character, and your gear carry into 2.5. What does not carry cleanly is any build tuned for pre-2.0 perk trees, because those trees no longer exist in their old form. Expect to re-spend perk points under the current trees; that is normal, not a bug, and it is the price of returning after a rebuild. Attribute points remain permanent, so a character built around Body will still be a Body character, but how that Body character fights will have changed. One practical warning: if you used external mods before 2.5, do not assume they still work. Update 2.5 adds official in-game mod support via mod.io, which is a different pipeline from old external mod installs, so check each mod against the current version before you load a modded save.

3. What to do first, in order

  • Load your save and open the perk screen. Re-spend perks under the current trees before you fight anything serious.

  • Visit a ripperdoc and check your cyberware against the current system, especially capacity and hand cyberware.

  • If you left before Phantom Liberty, play the Dogtown story after you are comfortable again, not before.

  • Then try the 2.5 additions: the Clampdown quest line (finish The Heist, do two Wakako gigs, wait for her message), a Glamdoc shop, and the dual-wield perk line if you play Cool.

  • Re-check your graphics settings. DLSS 4.5 is new in 2.5, and the FSR options changed (FSR 3 upscaling removed; FSR 2.1, FSR 4, and FSR 3.1 Frame Generation remain).

4. What not to redo

Do not restart the whole game to see 2.5. Every 2.5 feature is available to an existing character, and a restart costs you dozens of hours for nothing new in the opening. Do not re-buy the game either: 2.5 is a free update, and if you already own the base game you already own it. The only purchase decision is Phantom Liberty, and only if you do not already own it. And do not treat the community co-op mod as an official feature: it is community content, separate from the official mod.io support in 2.5, and it is not a reason to buy or reinstall on its own.

5. Should you buy Phantom Liberty now?

If you own only the base game, Phantom Liberty at its regular price of $29.99 (or the Ultimate Edition at $69.99 if you somehow own neither) is the one purchase worth considering, because Dogtown is a full district and story, not a cosmetic pack. Buy it after you are comfortable with the current systems again, so the new district meets a character you can actually play. If you already own it, there is nothing to buy: 2.5 and hotfix 2.500.200 are free, and the hotfix itself changes only one thing (Argentina save access), so do not expect it to fix anything else you noticed.

FAQ

Will my pre-2.0 save work in 2.5?

Yes, saves load into 2.5. Expect to re-spend perk points under the current trees, because the pre-2.0 trees no longer exist in their old form.

Do I need to restart to play the 2.5 quests?

No. The 2.5 quests and features are available to existing characters.

What does hotfix 2.500.200 fix?

One issue only: players in Argentina being unable to access saved game data. It changes nothing else, and no further patch timetable was announced.

Is there multiplayer now?

No. Update 2.5 adds in-game mod support via mod.io, not multiplayer. The co-op mod is community content.

My old mods broke. Is that expected?

Yes, that is expected after a major update. Update 2.5 adds official in-game mod support via mod.io, a different pipeline from old external installs. Check each mod against the current version.
