| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
1. Settlement | Talk to the locals and learn the area before you leave |
2. Crafting bench | Craft a baitcasting reel from the recipe on the bench |
3. First expedition | Follow the SET OUT story quest: board the motorboat and leave the Slough |
4. Fishing | Cast, watch the line, reel in and pull against the fish as prompted |
5. Boat upgrades | Use the Dry Dock and the engine module slot to install upgrades |
6. Night | Stay near light and the settlement; the water is not safe after dark |
1. Start in the settlement: talk first
The demo opens in a remote settlement on stilts over the water. Before you rush to the boat, talk to the people there. Dialogue choices appear on screen, and the locals explain the place, the market, and what is out on the water. The demo is voiced in English and Russian, so listen to the lines if you want the setting to make sense before you set out.
2. The crafting bench: make your first reel
Find the crafting bench in the settlement before your first trip. The bench shows recipes as cards: the baitcasting reel recipe is on display there, with its required parts laid out on the bench beside it. Craft it before you leave, because fishing is how you earn your keep out on the water, and a better reel is the first upgrade that matters. Crafting in the demo also covers survival gear, so check the recipe list on the bench before every trip, not just the first one.
3. First expedition: board the motorboat and leave the Slough
The demo quest line starts with a story quest called SET OUT: board the motorboat and leave the Slough. Follow the quest marker on the compass at the top of the screen and the distance readout next to it. The settlement sits on the water, and the demo area is the settlement plus the surrounding islands, so your first trip is short: get to the helm, leave the dock, and head for the marker. At the helm, the on-screen controls show Nitro for a burst of speed, Lighting for the boat lights, and Leave Helm to step away. Use the lights when the sky darkens; do not waste nitro on open water with nothing to reach.
4. Fishing basics: cast, reel, pull
Fishing is first-person. Cast out, watch the line, and wait for a bite. When a fish takes the bait, the screen shows two prompts: reel in, and pull against the fish. The reel-in prompt is your steady work; the pull-against prompt is for when the fish fights and the line is under strain. A distance readout on screen shows how far the fish is from you. Do not hold one input down without watching the line: the loop is about answering what the fish does, not about mashing one button. The full fishing system, including mutated catches and night fishing, is explained in our fishing system guide.
5. Boat upgrades: the Dry Dock and the engine slot
Your boat is not fixed. The settlement has a Dry Dock building on the shore, and that is where boat work happens. Inside, the boat has module slots, including an engine slot: the demo shows an Upgraded Engine being installed into the empty engine slot, with its own stats on the item card. Install upgrades when you have them rather than carrying them around, and check the Dry Dock after each trip, since a faster boat changes how far you can safely range from the settlement.
6. Night events: do not stay out late
The demo has night events, and the water changes after dark. Official screenshots show a huge mutated creature rising out of the water beside a boat at night, and the store page warns that monstrous creatures lurk under the water and on the land. For a first run, treat night as a reason to head back: keep the boat lights on, stay close to the settlement, and do not go looking for trouble in the dark. Learn the day routes first; the night is for when you know where everything is.
Beginner mistakes to avoid
Skipping the crafting bench. Make the baitcasting reel before your first trip, not after you are already out on the water.
Leaving the settlement without a plan. Follow the SET OUT quest marker instead of wandering the islands at random.
Ignoring the boat lights. Turn the lighting on as the sky darkens; the night water is the most dangerous part of the demo.
Treating fishing as one button. Watch the line and answer the prompts: reel in steadily, pull against the fish when it fights.

FAQ
Where do I start in the demo? In the settlement. Talk to the locals, use the crafting bench, then follow the SET OUT story quest to the motorboat.
What should I craft first? The baitcasting reel shown on the crafting bench. It is the first fishing upgrade the demo puts in front of you.
How do I upgrade the boat? At the Dry Dock in the settlement. The demo shows an Upgraded Engine going into the boat engine module slot.
Is the demo the full game? No. It is a self-contained quest line in the settlement and surrounding islands. Early Access starts November 9, 2026.
Bottom line: talk in the settlement, craft the reel, follow SET OUT to the boat, and get back before dark. That is the whole first expedition, and it teaches every system the demo has. This guide is written from the demo as of November 7, 2026; the full game may change details at or after the November 9, 2026 Early Access launch.
