| Part of fishing | How it works in the demo |
|---|---|
Casting and the bite | First-person casting from the boat or shore; wait for the bite on the line |
The fight | Reel in steadily and pull against the fish when prompted; the screen shows the fish distance |
The catch | Normal fish and mutated fish; catches feed crafting, trade, and survival |
Using the catch | Fish can be dissected to harvest organs and body parts for crafting lures and gear |
Night fishing | Possible in the demo, but night events bring creatures to the water; stay near light |
How a catch works: cast, wait, fight the line
Fishing is first-person and happens from the boat or from the shore. Cast out into the murky water and watch the line. When a fish bites, the screen shows the two prompts that run the whole fight: reel in, and pull against the fish. The reel-in prompt is your steady work through the fight. The pull-against prompt appears when the fish struggles and the line is under strain, and it is the answer to that struggle. A distance readout on screen tells you how far the fish is from you, so you can see whether you are gaining on it or losing it. The fight is a back-and-forth: watch what the fish does, then answer with the matching prompt. Holding one input without watching the line is the fastest way to lose a catch.
Rods, reels, and why the baitcasting reel matters
You do not fish with your hands. The demo crafting bench shows a baitcasting reel recipe, and crafting it is the first fishing upgrade the demo puts in front of you. Make it in the settlement before your first expedition, because the reel is what turns a cast into a catch you can actually land. Crafting in the demo also covers survival gear, so the bench is worth checking before every trip. The demo does not show a full rod and reel catalogue, and no complete gear list can be verified from it, so this guide does not invent one. What is verified is the loop: craft the gear, take it out, and the better your setup, the more of the water you can work.
Catches and mutations: what mutated fish are for
Not everything in the water is an ordinary fish. The world is a submerged landscape rotting from a past catastrophe, and the fish in it have mutated: official screenshots show spined, multi-eyed, and fleshy catches hanging at the market stalls, and the store page warns that monstrous creatures lurk under the water and on the land. Mutated catches are not decoration. According to the Steam store page, you can catch fish and dissect them to harvest organs and body parts, which are used for crafting lures and gear. That makes every catch a choice: a fish is food and trade goods, and its parts are also crafting material. The demo does not verify a full list of fish species or which part each one gives, so no such list appears here. What is verified is the system itself: catch, dissect, and craft from what you pull out of the water.
Night events: why night fishing is riskier
The demo has night events, and fishing after dark is a different activity from fishing in daylight. Official screenshots show a huge mutated creature rising out of the water beside a boat at night, with the boat lights on and the forest dark behind it. The store page warning is the same one as for the day, only sharper at night: monstrous creatures lurk under the water. If you fish at night, keep the boat lights on, stay close to the settlement, and treat any large shape in the water as a reason to leave, not as a catch to chase. Day fishing is for learning the loop; night fishing is for when you already know the water and can get back fast.
What the demo does not show
Three things are deliberately missing from this guide. First, there is no complete fish list: the demo shows mutated catches, but it does not verify every species, where each one lives, or what each one gives when dissected. Second, there are no catch rates or numbers: nothing in the demo or the official pages gives a rate worth quoting, so none is quoted here. Third, there is no best rod or best lure: the demo shows the baitcasting reel recipe and the crafting bench, not a full gear ranking. All three will be added after the full game launches on November 9, 2026, once they can be verified in the game.

FAQ
How do I catch a fish in the demo? Cast, wait for the bite, then reel in steadily and pull against the fish when the prompt appears. Watch the distance readout to see whether you are gaining on it.
What are mutated fish for? They can be dissected to harvest organs and body parts for crafting lures and gear, according to the Steam store page. They are also trade goods at the market.
Should I fish at night? Only once you know the water. Night events bring creatures to the surface, so stay near light and close to the settlement.
Is there a full fish list? Not yet. The demo does not verify every species, so this guide does not list them. A full list comes after the November 9, 2026 launch.
Bottom line: cast, answer the fish, and use the catch for more than food, because dissection turns fish into lures and gear. Learn the loop in daylight, and treat night fishing as the advanced version. This guide is written from the demo and the Steam store page as of November 7, 2026; the full game may change details at or after the November 9, 2026 Early Access launch.
