Installing Cyberpunk 2077 mods in 2.5 starts with one choice that decides everything else: console or PC. On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S you use the curated in-game mod.io menu and nothing else. On PC you use Nexus Mods, and you choose between Vortex, manual install, and the REDmod route, all standing on the same framework stack. The single rule behind every failure in this guide is install order: frameworks first, in dependency order, then the mods that need them, and never load a main save with an untested list.
Quick answer
Console: main menu, Mods, sign in with a CD PROJEKT RED account, connect mod.io, Subscribe, restart, and check the mod is ticked under Installed.
PC with Vortex: install Vortex, add Cyberpunk 2077, install the framework stack in order, then install content mods and deploy. A free Nexus Mods account is enough.
PC manual: merge the mod folders into the game root exactly as the mod page says: bin and x64 plugins, r6 scripts, archive files, or the REDmod mods folder.
Before any list change, back up your saves and test on a throwaway save. Removing a content mod mid-save can delete its items.

| Route | Platform | You need | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
In-game mod.io | PS5, PS5 Pro, XSX|S, PC, Mac | CD PROJEKT RED account linked to mod.io | Curated catalogue only; console modded saves earn no achievements or trophies |
Vortex | PC | Free Nexus Mods account; framework stack | Not every mod supports manager install; read the mod page |
Manual | PC | Framework stack; the mod page folder map | Mistakes land in the wrong folder; keep a change log |
REDmod | PC | Free REDmod DLC enabled; info.json mods | Only for REDmod-compatible mods |
Route 1: in-game mod.io on console
Open Mods from the main menu. Sign in with a CD PROJEKT RED account when prompted and connect that account to mod.io, then browse the available console-compatible mods and subscribe to the ones you want. Restart the game, open the Mods menu again, and confirm each mod is ticked in the Installed section. On mod.io, a mod that works on PlayStation 5 and Xbox carries an Available on consoles tag; if a mod lacks that tag, it will not show up on your console even if you subscribed on PC. Subscriptions can follow the same linked account across platforms, but only for mods supported on each platform. At launch on PlayStation 5 there were 52 mods in the catalogue, including new quests that reuse existing assets and dialogue, romance enhancements, quality-of-life mods, and fixes. CD PROJEKT RED describes this as a first step, with more mods becoming available over time. The one rule that matters most on console: modded saves are marked with a dedicated icon in the Load Game menu, and achievements and trophies cannot be earned while playing on console from a modded save file. Do not assume a PC mod from a video will be available on console, and do not expect the full Nexus library here.
Route 2: Vortex on PC
Download Vortex from Nexus Mods, install it, and sign in with a Nexus Mods account through the Vortex interface. Add Cyberpunk 2077 in the Games section; Vortex should auto-detect your installation. Install the framework stack first, in this order: Cyber Engine Tweaks 1.38.0, RED4ext 1.31.0, redscript 0.5.32, ArchiveXL 1.28.0, TweakXL 1.12.0, and Codeware 1.21.0, adding Input Loader, Mod Settings, and Native Settings UI wherever a mod you want lists them. You may need the latest Visual C++ Redistributable for Cyber Engine Tweaks to start. On each mod Nexus page, use the Mod manager download, then open it in Vortex, click Install, then Enable. Vortex handles file placement, conflict prompts, and updates. When Vortex shows a conflict between two mods, stop and read what files overlap before choosing a winner; the load-order article covers which conflicts are safe to resolve by order and which mean the mods cannot coexist. After installing, deploy if Vortex asks, then launch the game and check the mod works on a throwaway save before loading your main save.
Route 3: manual install on PC
Download the mod archive, extract it with 7-Zip or a similar tool, and open the extracted folder next to your Cyberpunk 2077 root folder. Merge the contents into the root folder, saying yes when Windows asks to merge folders or replace files; that is normal and expected. The folder names tell you where each part goes, and the mod page is the authority when it names a specific path:

| Folder in the archive | Goes to | Used by |
|---|---|---|
bin, x64, plugins | Game root, merged | Cyber Engine Tweaks, RED4ext, native plugins |
r6/scripts | Game root r6/scripts | redscript mods |
r6/input | Game root r6/input | Mods that add keybindings |
archive/pc/mod | Game root archive/pc/mod | Archive mods |
mods folder with info.json | Game root mods folder | REDmod-compatible mods |
Manual install gives you control, but it also gives you the whole change log to keep yourself. Write down every mod, version, and folder you touched, because uninstalling later means reversing exactly that list. If a mod page says Vortex only, or names a folder you do not have, stop and read the Posts tab before forcing files into place; a mod installed into the wrong folder does not fail loudly, it simply does nothing, and that silent failure is the hardest kind to diagnose.
Route 4: REDmod, the official DLC
REDmod is a free DLC for Cyberpunk
2077. On Steam, check REDmod under the game DLC list; in GOG Galaxy, enable it under Manage Installation and Configure; on Epic Games Store it is automatically installed with Cyberpunk 2077 version 1.6 or later. In the launcher, find the settings gear next to Play and check Enable mods. REDmod-compatible mods go in the mods folder in the game root, recognizable by their info.json manifest, and the game runs a mod deployment step before starting. You can use the REDmod tools separately from the command line, from the tools folder, or integrated into the WolvenKit mod editor, which detects REDmod on startup. In the game, REDmod mods appear in the REDmod menu where you can enable or disable them. The important limit: REDmod is not a universal installer. Archive mods, script mods, and CET mods do not become REDmod mods by being dropped in the mods folder; each mod page states which route it uses, and that statement is the install instruction.
Enable, disable, and uninstall without breaking a save
Disable first, delete second. In Vortex, disable a mod and test before uninstalling it. In the REDmod menu, untick a mod and test. For manual installs, move the mod folders out of the game root to a backup folder rather than deleting them outright.
Never remove a content mod from a save that uses its items. Weapons, clothing, vehicles, and cyberware from a removed mod have nowhere to go, and the save can lose them or fail to load cleanly.
One change at a time. Add or remove one mod, launch, and check a throwaway save before touching the next one. A list changed five at once cannot tell you which change broke it.
Keep the framework stack updated as a set. After a game patch, update Cyber Engine Tweaks, RED4ext, redscript, ArchiveXL, TweakXL, and Codeware before judging any content mod.
If the game will not start after installing mods
With the game closed, remove the most recently added mod first and try again. If the failure started right after a game patch such as 2.5, the cause is usually an outdated framework: manually delete the outdated RED4ext and Cyber Engine Tweaks files from bin and x64, delete the r6/cache and r6/scripts directories, then verify the game files through Steam or GOG to restore clean startup files. Verification restores vanilla files but does not delete third-party DLLs, which is why the manual deletion comes first. Then install the current framework versions from the best-mods article before reinstalling content mods one at a time. If the game closes a few seconds after starting, a plugin in the red4ext folder has not been updated for 2.5 yet; find it by the newest log file and remove that plugin until its author updates it.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a paid Nexus Mods account?
No. A free Nexus Mods account is enough for Vortex downloads and manager installs. Paid membership speeds up downloads; it does not unlock mods.
Can I mix Vortex and manual installs?
Yes, but keep the two sets visibly separate in your change log. Vortex manages only the mods it installed; manual files are yours to track. When a conflict appears, the first question is always which side installed the overlapping file.
Why does the game deploy mods every time I launch it?
That deployment step is the REDmod path integrating REDmod-compatible mods into the game before it starts. It is normal for REDmod installs. If you use only Vortex archive and script mods, you will not see the same deployment window.
Verification note
Version baseline: Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.5 (Edgerunners 2 Update), free, launched October 22, 2026, on PC, Mac, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S; the Nintendo Switch 2 version of 2.5 follows later.
Framework versions in this article are the dated 2.5 releases: Cyber Engine Tweaks 1.38.0 (October 22, 2026), RED4ext 1.31.0 (October 24, 2026), redscript 0.5.32 (October 22, 2026), ArchiveXL 1.28.0, TweakXL 1.12.0, and Codeware 1.21.0 (October 25, 2026). The unofficial 2.5 fix builds that bridged the first days were retired on October 24, 2026, once the official releases were out; use the official versions.
Every recommended gameplay mod states its own 2.5 evidence: a dated post-2.5 file, or a Nexus page listing 2.5 support. A mod whose newest file predates October 22, 2026, and whose page does not name 2.5 is listed as not yet confirmed, never as compatible.
Console mod facts follow the 2.5 patch notes as reported by multiple outlets: a curated mod.io catalogue in the in-game menu, a dedicated icon on modded saves, and no achievements or trophies on console modded saves. The patch-notes platform list for mod support at launch is PC, Mac, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, and Xbox Series X|S.
