The Deep North is the eighth and final biome, and it arrived with Valheim 1.0 on September 9,
2026. It is not just a colder Mountain. Deep snow blocks building until you clear it, frozen seas crack underfoot, snowstorms freeze you, and the whole biome runs on new stations, a new metal, and a boss route with no shortcuts. Come in full Ashlands gear, or do not come yet.
What 1.0 added in the Deep North
Iron Gate's 1.0 counts for the biome are: more than 40 new weapons, four new armor sets, more than 30 crafting materials, more than 80 building pieces, and more than 20 food items, plus new creatures, two new dungeons, and the final boss. The Deep North also brought the rideable moose, the grappling hook for steep terrain, and full crossplay across PC, Mac, Linux, Xbox, PlayStation 5, and Switch
2. Existing owners got the update free, and the price for new players rose to 29.99 dollars.
Cold, snow, and ice: the new rules
Deep snow must be cleared before you can build. Craft a Snow Shovel and dig out a footprint before a single wall goes up.
Frozen seas and ponds are slippery, and ice can crack underfoot. Watch your step in a fight, and remember that breaking ice can drop whatever stands on it.
Snowstorms freeze you. Frost Resistance Mead and a frost-resistant cape are the standard answers, and staying dry matters. The Ashen Cape is widely treated as the best pick.
Snow gathers visibly on rooftops during storms and leaves footprints without slowing you down. Build roofs that shed it, and do not fight on thin ice.
The gear floor: what to bring
The gear floor is fully upgraded Ashlands-tier gear: the Ask Set, Embla Set, or Flametal Armor depending on your playstyle, plus Frost Resistance Mead or a frost-resistant cape. Bring regular endgame food that boosts health and stamina, and Eitr food if you use magic. Nothing in the Deep North is designed to be visited in meadow clothing, and the biome is not physically blocked, so the only thing stopping an early visit is how fast it kills you.
Step 1: Embers from the Eternal Pyre
Kill Fader first. The Fader Relic builds an Eternal Pyre at the Stonecutter, and the pyre is the only source of Embers. Without Embers there is no Ember Charge and no Snow Shovel, and the whole Deep North route stalls at the first step. Sail north until ice sheets appear, land, and set up a forward base near an abandoned settlement: a portal, a workbench, and a bed.
Step 2: Winding Tunnels, Frostcore, and moulds
Raid the Winding Tunnels beneath abandoned settlements for Frostcore and moulds, including the Intricate Key Mould. Look for the largest house in a settlement and search inside for the entrance. Keep every mould you find: each one is used up when you craft, and the boss route needs three Intricate Keys. Then build the Frost Foundry and the Frigid Kiln. Keep the kiln fed with ice: it makes Liquid Frost, which the Foundry needs to harden casts.
Step 3: Bloodgold from Gammeltrolls
Gammeltrolls are ancient trolls that hurl tree trunks and petrify on death. No pickaxe can break a petrified Gammeltroll: blow it apart with Ember Charges, made from Embers and Seal Pelts, and smelt the Petrified Tissue into Bloodgold in a Blast Furnace. Bloodgold is a metal, so plan around portal limits for metal rather than assuming you can teleport it home.
At least 15 Bloodgold goes to the three Intricate Keys alone, at 5 each, before spending any on armor or weapons. Expect at least three Gammeltrolls, three Winding Tunnels runs, three Morkhalla dungeons, and three Jotun invasions across the full route.
Step 4: Nord gear and the endgame food tier
Make a Cast from a mould and Bloodgold at a level 4 Black Forge, or a level 3 Galdr Table for Caller gear and staffs, then harden it in the Frost Foundry. A Nord Sword paired with a Nord Shield gives decent melee range and parrying, and a Nord Bow with Bloodgold Arrows covers ranged combat. Bloodgold also extends into bolts, missiles, and payloads for other ranged weapons.
For food, the Deep North tier builds on the same three-slot rule: one health-leaning dish, one stamina-leaning dish, and one flex slot. Verified examples from the new tier are Lingonberry Juice at 35 health and 105 stamina, Cooked Moose Meat at 80 health and 27 stamina, and Cooked Seal Blubber at 60 health and 20 stamina. Seal Meat Soup, Smoked Moose Meat, and Lingonberry Juice are a solid staple set, and magic users swap in Eitr food such as Oatmeal and Poteitr dishes.
Step 5: the final boss route
Craft 3 Intricate Keys and open 3 Gates of Morkhalla, breaking the Malice Ice at the bottom of each with a Black Metal Pickaxe.
Each broken Malice Ice triggers a Jotun invasion. Travel to the marked site, defeat the Krigens and Hexens, and break the Malice Ice structure to collect Malicious Blood.
Bring 3 Malicious Blood to the Strange Bowl by the Aesir Passage to open the door to Kall Fimbulbringer in The Prison.
Beat Kall, take the Sacrificial Blood back to your spawn point, and watch the final cutscene. Kall grants no Forsaken Power.
What comes after the finale
Iron Gate has said there will be no more promised large expansions after 1.0, only fixes and quality-of-life work. The Deep North is the end of the main progression, not the start of a new one. What remains is the sandbox itself: building, farming, sailing, taming the rideable moose, and the achievement hunt, which is covered in the two achievement guides in this column.
