Valheim Early Bosses Guide: Eikthyr, The Elder, Bonemass, and Moder

How to summon and beat Valheim's first four Forsaken bosses, what each one drops, and which Forsaken Power to take home.

Guide chapters7 chapters

Valheim's first four bosses are not optional side quests. Eikthyr, The Elder, Bonemass, and Moder each drop the item that opens the next biome, and each one hands you a Forsaken Power when you hang its trophy at the Sacrificial Stones. Fight them in biome order, and never walk into an altar without the right resistance and food.

The lightning stag is the face of the first boss fight. Eikthyr is fast, but it is also the most forgiving Forsaken in the game.

Read the red-glowing Vegvisir runestones to mark each altar on your map. Every world has several altars per boss, so if one is far away, sail out and read another Vegvisir rather than marching across the whole map. Each boss also guarantees a trophy on death: that trophy is what unlocks the Forsaken Power, so do not leave it in a chest.

Eikthyr: the Meadows stag

Eikthyr is a giant electrified stag, and its altar usually stands close to spawn. The Vegvisir at the Sacrificial Stones points to it. Place 2 Deer Trophies on the altar to call it. It attacks with a ranged lightning bolt, a close-range electric stomp, and an antler ram. With 500 health, it falls to flint or early bronze gear: block its charges with a small wooden shield and strike between attacks.

The kill drops Hard Antlers, which craft the Antler Pickaxe. That pickaxe is the real prize: it lets you mine copper and tin, which starts the whole bronze age. Hang the trophy for a power that cuts running, jumping, and swimming stamina cost by 60 percent.

Early-game logistics matter as much as the fight: bring a cart for ore, and never summon a boss with a full inventory.

The Elder: the Black Forest guardian

The Elder is a towering tree-guardian in the Black Forest, and its Vegvisir hides inside Burial Chambers. Burn 3 Ancient Seeds in the altar offering bowl to summon it. Seeds drop from Greydwarf brutes, Greydwarf shamans, and the nests they guard. The Elder fires vine projectiles, stomps for area damage, and summons roots from the ground.

It is a tree, so fire is the answer. Fire arrows are the fastest way through its 2,500 health, and the stone pillars around the altar make good cover. The reward is the Swamp Key, which opens the Sunken Crypts where iron waits, plus a power that boosts chopping and mining damage and health regeneration.

Bonemass: the Swamp wall

Bonemass is a huge poison-belching slime and the first real wall in the game. Its Vegvisir appears inside Sunken Crypts. Summon it with 10 Withered Bones, dug from muddy scrap piles and looted in those crypts. With 5,000 health, heavy poison clouds, and constant self-healing, it punishes the wrong loadout.

  • Bring an iron mace: Bonemass is weak to blunt and frost.

  • Poison-resistance mead is close to mandatory. Do not skip it.

  • Clear its summoned skeletons and blobs before they pile up.

The kill drops the Wishbone, which pings buried silver in the Mountains and hidden treasure. The power grants 25 percent physical damage resistance and near-free blocking, and it stays useful long after the Swamp.

Build the base before the boss, not after: a rested, well-fed party with a portal nearby beats a stronger party that has to run back.

Moder: the Mountain dragon

Moder is a frost dragon summoned at a mountain summit. Look for its Vegvisir inside ruined stone towers near the peaks, then bring 3 Dragon Eggs from drake nests. Each egg weighs 200, so plan one trip per egg unless you have the Megingjord belt or friends to help carry.

The Mountain itself will freeze you without frost-resistance mead or wolf armor, so pack survival gear first. Moder has 7,500 health and alternates grounded claw swipes with airborne frost-breath barrages, so bring a strong bow for the air phases. The kill drops Dragon Tears for the Artisan Table, plus a power that gives a constant sailing tailwind, 300 extra carry weight, 10 percent move speed, and frost resistance.

Trophies are not decorations. Hanging one at the Sacrificial Stones is what turns a kill into a reusable Forsaken Power.

How to prepare for all four

  • Three good foods, not one: health and stamina both scale with what you eat.

  • A portal and a bed near the altar. Boss runs are long, and the walk back is where runs die.

  • Farm the summon items before you are ready to fight, so the altar never waits on a drop.

  • In co-op, split roles: one player holds the boss attention while others clear adds.

Co-op changes boss fights completely. A full party can split damage, revives, and add-clearing instead of doing everything alone.
Dungeons are where the summon items and the gear for the next boss come from. Clear them before you commit to an altar.
Trolls are not bosses, but they teach the same lesson early: big swings are telegraphed, and dodging beats tanking.

Common mistakes

  • Summoning Bonemass without poison resistance, or Moder without frost protection.

  • Fighting The Elder in melee range, where its roots and stomps stack up.

  • Forgetting the trophy at the altar and sailing home without the Forsaken Power.

Once Moder falls, the Plains open up. That is where the late-boss chain starts, with Yagluth, The Queen, Fader, and finally Kall Fimbulbringer in the Deep North.
