Baldur's Gate 3 Evocation Wizard Build: Fireball, Magic Missile & Spellbook

The reason to choose Evocation is not “Fire spells do more damage.” At Wizard 2, Sculpt Spells lets allies automatically succeed saving throws against your Evocation area spells and take no damage from those spells. That changes targeting: Fireball, Lightning Bolt and other eligible Evocations can be placed aggressively around melee allies instead of waiting for the room to become tidy.

At Wizard 10, Empowered Evocation adds Intelligence modifier to damage rolls with Evocation spells; the current implementation is particularly strong on multi-instance spells such as Magic Missile, where the Intelligence bonus applies to each missile.

Evocation is the Wizard for parties that refuse to stand where Fireball wants them to stand

This is a pure Wizard 12 guide. Wizards can change prepared spells outside combat and permanently scribe Wizard scrolls into the spellbook, so the “build” is less about locking twelve spell picks forever and more about building a dependable prepared core, then swapping the specialist tools for the next area.

Evocation is chosen at Wizard

2. Sculpt Spells immediately changes where your AoE can be placed.

Build slotRecommendationWhy

Class

Evocation Wizard 12

Full 6th-level Wizard progression, three feats, full spellbook.

Starting stats

High initiative/AC with a clean Intelligence path.

Feat 4

+2 INT

18 Intelligence.

Feat 8

+2 INT

20 Intelligence.

Feat 12

Alert

Act before enemies spread out or disable the caster.

Subclass 2

Sculpt Spells

Allies take no damage from your eligible Evocation AoEs.

Subclass 6

Potent Cantrip

Save-based damaging cantrips deal half damage on a successful save.

Subclass 10

Empowered Evocation

Add INT modifier to Evocation spell damage rolls; excellent with multi-instance spells.

Wizard level-ups add only two learned spells, but scroll transcription means the real spellbook can become much larger.

Potent Cantrip has a narrower job than its name suggests

Potent Cantrip at level 6 only helps damaging cantrips that use a saving throw. It does not improve attack-roll cantrips such as Fire Bolt or Ray of Frost when those miss. Current examples that benefit include Acid Splash and other save-based damaging cantrips. This is useful, but it is not the subclass feature to build the entire character around; Sculpt Spells and Empowered Evocation matter more to normal Evocation turns.

LevelCore additionsWhy it matters

1

Shield, Magic Missile; utility such as Longstrider / Find Familiar

Shield is emergency defence; Magic Missile gives guaranteed cleanup.

2

Evocation School — Sculpt Spells

AoE placement becomes dramatically easier around melee allies.

3

Misty Step / Scorching Ray / Web-style utility

Mobility and second-level coverage.

4

Feat: +2 INT

18 Intelligence.

5

Fireball + Counterspell; Lightning Bolt as alternative geometry

The classic level-5 Wizard spike.

6

Potent Cantrip

Save-based cantrips retain half damage on successful saves.

7

Ice Storm / Wall of Fire / Dimension Door

Fourth-level damage/control and rescue mobility.

8

Feat: +2 INT

20 Intelligence.

9

Cone of Cold / Hold Monster / Conjure Elemental

Fifth-level burst/control/summon options.

10

Empowered Evocation

INT is added to Evocation damage rolls; Magic Missile becomes especially efficient.

11

Chain Lightning / Globe of Invulnerability / Disintegrate choices

6th-level spell access. Prepare for the encounter, not a fixed list.

12

Feat: Alert

Going first lets you AoE before enemies scatter and Counterspell from a safe position.

Magic Missile is valuable before level 10 because it cannot miss; after Empowered Evocation, each missile also benefits from the Intelligence damage bonus.

Magic Missile is not only a beginner spell

Magic Missile ignores normal attack-roll accuracy and can split darts among targets. Psychic Spark, sold by Blurg in the Underdark, adds one additional dart to every cast. At Evocation 10, Empowered Evocation adds the Wizard’s Intelligence modifier to each missile. That makes the spell excellent for removing several low-HP targets, stripping effects that care about separate damage instances, or finishing a priority enemy without gambling on an attack roll.

Do not overbuild around every historical damage-rider interaction you see in old videos. The stable value is simple: guaranteed hits, controllable dart distribution, Psychic Spark adding a dart, and the level-10 Intelligence bonus.

Fireball is safer here because Sculpt Spells changes the target map

Sculpt Spells makes allies auto-succeed saves and take no damage from your Evocation area spells. That means the Wizard can place an eligible Fireball over a Fighter who is already surrounded, rather than waiting for the frontline to disengage. It does not make every spell in the game friendly-fire safe, and it has no effect on single-target Evocations. Check the spell school/behaviour before treating the party as immune.

Evocation earns its reputation when a Fireball can be placed where the enemies are, even if your melee ally is already in the middle of them.

Spellbook discipline: prepare roles, not a list of twenty damage spells

RoleExamplesWhy keep it

Reaction defence

Shield, Counterspell

Prevents a dangerous hit/spell without spending the main Action.

Mobility

Misty Step, Dimension Door

Fixes bad positioning and rescues allies.

Guaranteed / single target

Magic Missile, Scorching Ray

Reliable cleanup or concentrated damage.

Area Evocation

Fireball, Lightning Bolt, Ice Storm, Cone of Cold

The subclass can place many of these aggressively around allies.

Control

Slow, Hold Monster, Sleet Storm / other prepared control

Not every encounter is solved by more fire damage.

Endgame safety

Globe of Invulnerability

Some Honour/Act 3 mechanics are easier to survive than to out-damage.

A Wizard is strongest when the spellbook contains answers that are not all damage spells; endgame defence can be worth an entire damage turn.

Evocation does not need to stand in melee. High-level spell damage is strongest when the Wizard keeps line of sight and reaction access.

StageUseful piecesWhy

Act 1

Psychic Spark, The Spellsparkler or Melf’s First Staff, good robes

Psychic Spark directly improves Magic Missile; staff choices help spell attacks/DC or repeated hits.

Act 2

Coruscation/Callous Glow style missile synergies if the party supports illumination, Spell Save DC gear

Multi-hit Magic Missile can apply repeated effects, but only use the package if it does not steal another build’s core gear.

Act 3

Markoheshkir, Robe of the Weave, Hood of the Weave, Spellmight Gloves where appropriate

High spell DC/attack plus Arcane Battery and Kereska’s Favour create a strong all-purpose endpoint.

4. If the room is too dangerous for normal trading, use control or Globe of Invulnerability rather than racing damage.

3. If the target is nearly dead or has extreme AC, Magic Missile removes hit-roll variance.

2. If one dangerous caster acts next, keep the reaction for Counterspell rather than spending every slot on damage.

1. If several enemies can be hit by one eligible AoE and allies are in the blast, exploit Sculpt Spells instead of waiting for a perfect empty circle.

5. After combat, swap prepared spells for the next location. A Wizard who never changes preparation is leaving class power unused.

Abjuration is better when the entire concept is layered damage prevention. Bladesinging is better when weapon turns and mobility are part of the identity. Divination is excellent when manipulating key d20 rolls matters more than friendly-fire freedom. Evocation is the cleanest “full Wizard who throws AoE through the frontline” choice.

Honour Mode notes / When another Wizard school is better

  • Sculpt Spells is reliability: it removes friendly-fire damage from eligible Evocations, but it does not make the party immune to every surface or non-Evocation spell.

  • Alert is valuable because the ideal Fireball is usually before enemies scatter into five corners.

  • Do not assume an old Magic Missile damage-rider video matches current Honour behavior. Build around documented spell/item effects, not bug chains.

  • Globe of Invulnerability can be a better use of a 6th-level slot than Chain Lightning when the encounter has a scripted lethal phase.

  • Counterspell is part of your damage plan because preventing an enemy turn preserves party actions.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming Potent Cantrip helps Fire Bolt misses — it only affects save-based damaging cantrips.

  • Preparing twelve damage spells and no Counterspell/mobility/control.

  • Using Magic Missile only at level 1 and forgetting how Empowered Evocation scales it later.

  • Treating Sculpt Spells as universal friendly-fire immunity.

  • Never transcribing useful scrolls because the level-up spell list feels sufficient.

FAQ

  • Is Evocation only good for Gale? No. Any Wizard can choose the school at level 2; Gale simply defaults naturally into the archetype.

  • Does Sculpt Spells protect allies from Fireball? Yes, eligible Evocation AoEs make allies auto-save and take no damage.

  • Does Potent Cantrip help Fire Bolt? No. Fire Bolt uses an attack roll; Potent Cantrip applies to damaging cantrips with saving throws.

  • Why is Magic Missile strong at level 10? Empowered Evocation adds INT modifier to each missile, and Psychic Spark can add an extra dart.

  • Should Evocation multiclass? It can, but Wizard 12 is already complete and keeps all feats/6th-level access.
