Shadowheart joins as a High Half-Elf Trickery Domain Cleric. Trickery is playable and fits her story, but for a general combat companion the easiest improvement is a Withers respec into Light Cleric
12. The build keeps the full Cleric spell ladder, gets Warding Flare, Radiance of the Dawn, always-prepared Fireball and Wall of Fire, Improved Warding Flare, Potent Spellcasting and Destructive Wave. It also pairs naturally with Spirit Guardians and Radiating Orb gear, turning Shadowheart into support, control, area damage and accuracy suppression at the same time.
Quick answer: respec Shadowheart from Trickery to Light Cleric 12 unless you need a different party job
Pure Cleric 12 is intentional. A companion build should be easy to respec at any point, work without permanent player-character bonuses, and keep Heroes’ Feast, Heal and Planar Ally. Multiclassing can optimise specific damage packages, but it is not necessary to make Shadowheart strong.
Light Cleric gives Shadowheart reliable radiant/fire pressure without giving up the full Cleric support list.

Withers lets you rebuild Shadowheart without changing her companion story identity.
Why Light instead of the default Trickery Domain
Trickery focuses on stealth support and role-play flavour. Light gives more universally useful combat actions: Warding Flare at level 1, Radiance of the Dawn at level 2, Fireball at level 5, Improved Warding Flare at 6, Potent Spellcasting at 8 and Destructive Wave at
9. The domain still retains every normal Cleric preparation choice, so switching domains does not turn Shadowheart into a Sorcerer with a holy skin.

| Route | What you gain | What you give up | Who should pick it |
|---|---|---|---|
Light Cleric 12 | Full Cleric progression through level 6 spells such as Heroes’ Feast, Heal and Planar Ally; third feat at Cleric 12; simplest respec and spell preparation. | No Starry Form utility. | Default here: broad companion build, first Honour clear, or anyone who wants the Cleric kit to remain complete. |
10 Cleric / 2 Stars Druid | Starry Form at Druid 2: Dragon stabilises concentration rolls below 10, Chalice adds healing after slot-based healing spells, Archer adds a Bonus Action radiant attack. Current Gamestegy’s Shadowheart build uses this shell. | No Cleric 11 level-6 Cleric spells and no Cleric 12 third feat; two-class spell preparation and Wild Shape / Starry Form resource management. | Pick it when Starry Form utility matters more than pure-Cleric capstones and you are comfortable managing the multiclass. |
Why pure level 12 remains the default: the multiclass is a real optimisation option, not a correction to a broken pure build. Pure Light 12 keeps the full Cleric spell list and third feat; 10/2 buys flexible Starry Form tools instead.

| Domain | Best use case / Trade-off |
|---|---|
Light | General campaign / Radiant Orb / aggressive support / Less dedicated raw healing than Life. |
Life | First Honour clear / healing-heavy safety / Lower offensive pressure; can encourage over-healing. |
Death (Patch 8) | Necrotic / Shar-themed martial-caster flavour / Different damage/gear plan; not the simplest all-purpose support. |
Trickery | Story-faithful stealth/support route / Combat kit is less straightforward for many parties. |

| Cleric level | What matters | Prepared / always-prepared focus |
|---|---|---|
1 | Warding Flare; Light / Burning Hands / Faerie Fire | Bless, Healing Word, Sanctuary, Command. |

3 | 2nd-level Cleric spells; Flaming Sphere / Scorching Ray | Aid, Spiritual Weapon, Hold Person situationally. |
4 | Feat: +2 WIS | 18 Wisdom. |
5 | 3rd-level Cleric spells; Daylight / Fireball | Spirit Guardians, Mass Healing Word, Revivify. |
6 | Improved Warding Flare | Reaction can protect allies, not only Shadowheart. |
7 | 4th-level spells; Guardian of Faith / Wall of Fire | Freedom of Movement, Death Ward, area denial. |
8 | Feat + Potent Spellcasting | 20 WIS; cantrips add Wisdom to damage. |
9 | 5th-level spells; Destructive Wave / Flame Strike | Mass Cure Wounds / Planar Binding situationally. |
10 | Divine Intervention | One-per-playthrough class emergency/utility. |
11 | 6th-level Cleric spells | Heroes’ Feast, Heal, Planar Ally. |
12 | War Caster or Alert | Tune concentration or initiative for the final party. |
Spirit Guardians is the combat engine, not the entire spellbook
Spirit Guardians is so efficient that bad guides turn Shadowheart into a one-spell character. The better loop is conditional. Use Spirit Guardians when enemies have to fight inside or cross her aura. Use Bless when accuracy/saving throws decide more turns. Use Wall of Fire when a static line controls the map better. Use Fireball or Radiance of the Dawn when concentration should remain on another effect or the fight simply needs immediate area damage.
Spirit Guardians is a movement-and-position spell as much as a damage spell: Shadowheart must move the aura through relevant targets while keeping concentration.
Radiating Orb: why Luminous Armour remains an Act 1 powerhouse
Luminous Armour has 15 AC and Radiating Shockwave: dealing Radiant damage triggers a 3 m Radiant Shockwave that applies Radiating Orb to nearby enemies. Radiating Orb reduces attack rolls, so Spirit Guardians and Radiance of the Dawn can turn Shadowheart into a party-wide accuracy debuffer instead of a healer waiting for HP bars to fall. Moonbeam does not trigger the armour’s shockwave, so do not assume every radiant spell behaves identically.
Luminous Armour is valuable because Radiant damage becomes an accuracy debuff in an area around the damage event.
Gear progression / Fireball is a domain tool, not a reason to stop supporting

| Stage | Recommended direction | Why |
|---|---|---|
Act 1 | Luminous Armour; shield; Blood of Lathander when available; Whispering Promise / healing riders if party needs them | Radiating Orb and anti-undead utility are immediately relevant. |
Act 2 | Keep the Radiating Orb package if it is working; add Boots of Stormy Clamour / Coruscation Ring-style support where party allocation allows | Spirit Guardians can distribute multiple debuff systems. |
Act 3 | Armour of Agility for high-Dex medium route, or strong domain/party-specific armour; Spell Save DC / concentration accessories | Endgame gear should preserve concentration and turn order before adding marginal damage. |
A useful Shadowheart build should make the character sheet coherent: 20 Wisdom, enough Constitution to hold concentration, and gear that serves the chosen domain.
Light gets Fireball always prepared at Cleric
5. Use it when enemies are clustered and the party does not need the Action for healing, control or Spirit Guardians setup. Fireball does not compete for concentration, which makes it a perfect “I am already concentrating and still need AoE now” button. Destructive Wave later fills a similar close-range burst/control role at higher level.
Light Cleric Fireball is strongest as non-concentration burst while another concentration plan stays active.
A practical combat loop
1. Before combat, choose concentration based on the map: Bless, Spirit Guardians, Wall of Fire or another tool — not by habit.
2. Use Healing Word as emergency Bonus Action recovery, not as a full-time “heal every scratch” job.
3. Move Spirit Guardians through several enemies while protecting concentration and avoiding needless Opportunity Attacks.
4. Use Warding Flare / Improved Warding Flare on attacks that would meaningfully hurt or break concentration.
5. Use Radiance of the Dawn / Fireball when immediate AoE is more valuable than another support Action.
6. Short/Long Rest before the spellbook is empty, not when every member is already at one spell slot.
War Caster becomes more attractive when Spirit Guardians is the party’s key midline control plan.; Alert is the alternative when Shadowheart repeatedly acts after enemies have already spread or disabled someone.; Healing Word is for stabilising/standing allies up; proactive control and accuracy debuffs usually prevent more damage than reactive healing restores.
Do not run into Radiant Retort-style encounters blindly. Inspect enemies before turning every radiant aura on.; Heroes’ Feast and Aid are pre-fight resource multipliers on difficult late-game runs; do not treat them as “healer spells” that only matter after damage.; Keeping default Trickery solely because changing domain feels “non-canon,” even when the user specifically wants the best general combat build.
Dumping Constitution and then losing Spirit Guardians on the first hit.; Casting Spirit Guardians in a fight where enemies are spread across three elevations and will never enter the aura.; Equipping Radiating Orb gear without actually dealing Radiant damage to trigger it.; Using every Action on healing instead of preventing enemy turns or reducing hit chance.
Common mistakes / Honour Mode adjustments / FAQ
Can Shadowheart respec without breaking her story? Yes. Withers changes mechanics, not her companion identity.

War Caster or Alert? War Caster for concentration problems; Alert for initiative problems.; Is Life Cleric bad? No. It is the safer healing-heavy option, especially for a first Honour clear.
