Circle of the Moon is not a caster that occasionally turns into a bear. Combat Wild Shape costs a Bonus Action, comes back twice per Short Rest, and gives the Druid a second pool of hit points with its own Strength, Dexterity and Constitution. When the form reaches 0 HP you return to Druid form, with excess damage carrying over. The trade is equally important: while Wild Shaped you cannot cast normal spells, so the class is strongest when you cast a useful concentration or long-duration spell first, then transform and spend several turns fighting as the form.
Moon Druid is two health bars and a spellbook — but never at the same moment
Pure Moon Druid 12 is the default here. It gets Tavern Brawler at 4, Wild Strike at 5, Owlbear + Primal Strike at 6, Sabre-Toothed Tiger at 8, the exclusive elemental Myrmidon forms plus Improved Wild Strike at 10, 6th-level Druid spells at 11, and a third feat at
12. The commonly optimised 10 Moon / 1 Fighter / 1 War Cleric endpoint is a variant, not a requirement.
Owlbear is the level-6 workhorse: high HP, Crushing Flight mobility, Enrage and strong physical attacks.

| Build slot | Recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
Class | Circle of the Moon Druid 12 | Three feats, 6th-level spells and maximum form scaling. |
Starting stats | STR 10 / DEX 14 / CON 15 / INT 8 / WIS 16 / CHA 8 | Physical stats are replaced in form; base-form initiative, concentration and Wisdom still matter. |
Feat 4 | Tavern Brawler (+1 CON) | Brings base CON to 16; Strength modifier is added again to attack/damage for most beast forms. |
Feat 8 | War Caster | Advantage on concentration saves continues to help spells maintained before transforming. |
Feat 12 | Alert | Act early: cast setup spell and transform before enemies pin the Druid down. |
Resource | 2 Wild Shape Charges per Short Rest | Combat Wild Shape uses Bonus Action; Moon Myrmidons cost 2 charges. |
Default forms | Owlbear → Sabre-Tooth → Myrmidon by encounter | No single form is best at every level or map. |
Wild Shape is a renewable Short Rest resource. Moon Druid should spend forms proactively instead of saving both charges through the fight.
Tavern Brawler works in Wild Shape — with exceptions
Current BG3 mechanics apply Tavern Brawler’s extra Strength modifier to attack and damage rolls in Wild Shape, except when using Fire, Water or Air Myrmidon forms. Earth Myrmidon can still benefit because its attacks fit the compatible pattern. The +1 STR/CON granted when taking the feat belongs to the Druid’s base statistics and does not become a bonus to the form’s physical stat block. Starting at CON 15 and choosing +1 CON is therefore a clean way to make the feat useful in and out of form.
Do not assume every other feat or equipment passive works in Wild Shape. BG3 merges most equipment into the form and many bonuses stop functioning. Build-specific Moon gear is valuable precisely because it is coded to survive the transformation.
Level 1–12 progression

| Level | Feature / pick | Form or turn-plan change |
|---|---|---|
1 | Druid spellcasting | Prepare Longstrider, Healing Word and encounter spells; no Wild Shape yet. |
2 | Circle of the Moon — Combat Wild Shape, Bear, Lunar Mend | Transform as Bonus Action; two charges per Short Rest. |
3 | 2nd-level spells: Moonbeam / Spike Growth / Heat Metal options | Cast concentration first when useful, then transform. |
4 | Feat: Tavern Brawler; Dire Raven | TB improves compatible beast attacks; Raven is excellent mobility/scouting. |
5 | Wild Strike; 3rd-level spells | Animal forms gain a second attack after attacking. |
6 | Primal Strike + Owlbear | Attacks count as magical for resistance; Owlbear becomes the general combat form. |
7 | 4th-level spells / summons | Conjure Woodland Being and control can be established before shifting. |
8 | Feat: War Caster; Sabre-Toothed Tiger | Tiger adds Shred Armour and regeneration; concentration gets safer. |
9 | 5th-level spells | Conjure Elemental and area-control options expand the pre-shift turn. |
10 | Improved Wild Strike + Air/Earth/Fire/Water Myrmidons | Animal/Myrrmidon attack sequences reach three attacks; Moon-specific elemental forms arrive. |
11 | 6th-level Druid spells | Heroes’ Feast/Heal/Sunbeam/Wall of Thorns are available in base form. |
12 | Feat: Alert; maximum form scaling | Owlbear reaches 112 HP and form damage improves again. |
Sabre-Toothed Tiger is the level-8 single-target/debuff form: Shred Armour reduces AC and the form regenerates.
The four forms you actually need to understand
Swipe horizontally to view all columns.
| Form | Why use it | Cost / caution |
|---|---|---|
Owlbear | General frontline: high HP, Crushing Flight, Enrage, Rupture; 112 HP at Druid 12 | 1 charge; Crushing Flight pathing can accidentally damage/anger NPCs in towns. |
Sabre-Toothed Tiger | Single-target pressure, Shred Armour (-2 AC), strong movement and regeneration | 1 charge; lower raw durability than Owlbear. |
Earth Myrmidon | Very high HP, Burrow, ranged Sludgy Sling, compatible with Tavern Brawler | 2 charges; consumes the entire normal Short Rest Wild Shape pool. |
Water / Air / Fire Myrmidons | Elemental utility, healing/control/mobility depending form | 2 charges; Tavern Brawler does not apply to these three. |
Water Myrmidon trades Tavern Brawler synergy for elemental tools such as Healing Vapours and Hiemal Strike.
Owlbear: use Crushing Flight as movement with consequences
Owlbear starts at 65 HP when learned at Druid 6 and scales to 112 HP at Druid
12. Crushing Flight uses a Bonus Action plus movement, reaches a long distance and can knock targets Prone. Enrage raises Strength/Constitution, grants temporary HP and can frighten nearby enemies. The form is excellent because movement, damage and control are all in the same body.
There is one real-world nuisance: Owlbear pathing can use Crushing Flight automatically while following the main character and damage nearby NPCs. In populated areas, dismiss the form before letting the party wander through civilians.
Moon Druid forms are not only “extra HP.” Mobility and control actions decide which shape is correct for the map.
What to cast before transforming
Swipe horizontally to view all columns.
| Spell type | Examples | Why |
|---|---|---|
Long-duration non-concentration | Longstrider, Aid from allies, Heroes’ Feast later | Keeps working without asking the Wild Shape to cast. |
Concentration terrain/control | Spike Growth, Sleet Storm, Wall of Thorns when appropriate | Entering Wild Shape does not automatically break concentration. |
Summons | Conjure Woodland Being / Conjure Elemental | Add extra turns before you spend your own actions as a form. |
Emergency base-form support | Healing Word, Heal, dispel/utility | Sometimes the right Moon Druid turn is to stay humanoid for one more round. |
A crucial engine limitation: many spells create a follow-up “reactivate” action that the game treats as a spell. Those follow-up buttons may not be usable while Wild Shaped even though concentration itself continues. Do not plan a form around repeatedly reactivating a spell without checking that specific spell.
Gear: most items turn off, so prioritise the few that do not

| Stage | Useful pieces | Why |
|---|---|---|
Act 1 | Shapeshifter’s Boon Ring if the story route provides it; otherwise base-form caster/initiative gear | The ring adds 1d4 to ability checks while shapeshifted; ordinary combat gear often does not transfer. |
Act 2 | Concentration/initiative gear for the pre-shift turn; keep strong base-form caster options | The goal is to cast setup, hold concentration, then become the second health bar. |
Act 3 | Armour of Moonbasking; Shapeshifter Hat | Moonbasking gives 22 temp HP after Wild Shape, +2 AC and advantage vs spell saves while shifted; the hat adds one Wild Shape Charge per Long Rest. |
Earth Myrmidon is the durable endgame form and consumes two Wild Shape Charges, so choose it for fights that justify the full resource pool.
Honour Mode notes
Wild Shape is a safety layer, not immortality. Excess damage that drops the form below 0 carries into the Druid’s real HP.
Two charges refresh on Short Rest. Use the first form early enough that it actually absorbs enemy turns.
Tavern Brawler is reliable on beast forms but not Fire/Water/Air Myrmidons; do not read one feat line and assume all four elementals behave the same.
War Caster helps concentration that was established before shifting, but most active spell buttons remain unavailable in form.
The safest boss opener is often summon/control or other setup in humanoid form, Bonus Action transform, then spend the next turns attacking instead of shifting back and forth.
Pure 12 versus 10 Moon / 1 Fighter / 1 War Cleric

| Version | Gain | Give up |
|---|---|---|
Moon Druid 12 | Three feats, maximum Druid spell access/scaling, simple respec-free path | No Fighter style / War Priest bonus-action attacks. |
Moon 10 / Fighter 1 / War Cleric 1 | Fighting Style and War Priest charge utility in humanoid/form-dependent interactions | Druid 11–12 progression and third feat; more rules to track. |
Common mistakes
Equipping a full “best-in-slot” set without checking whether the passives work in Wild Shape.
Transforming before casting the concentration/control spell you wanted to maintain.
Spending two charges on a Myrmidon for a trivial encounter that a one-charge Owlbear would solve.
Assuming Tavern Brawler applies to all four Myrmidons.
Walking Owlbear through a town and accidentally Crushing-Flight pathing into civilians.
FAQ
When does Moon Druid get Owlbear? Druid level 6; Owlbear is a base Druid form, but Moon uses it as a Bonus Action through Combat Wild Shape.
When do Moon Myrmidons arrive? Moon Druid level 10; each costs two Wild Shape Charges.
Does Tavern Brawler work in Wild Shape? Yes on compatible forms; current rules exclude Fire, Water and Air Myrmidons.
Do equipment bonuses work while shifted? Most do not. Armour of Moonbasking and a small list of shapeshift-compatible items are exceptions.
Can I keep concentration in Wild Shape? Yes, entering form does not end concentration, but many spell reactivation actions cannot be used while shifted.
