Baldur's Gate 3 Arcane Archer Fighter Build: Arcane Shots, Leveling & Gear

Guide chapters11 chapters

Patch 8 finally gives Fighter a dedicated magical archer without turning the class into a half-caster. The important part is still the Fighter chassis: Archery Fighting Style, Action Surge, four feat opportunities and Improved Extra Attack at level

11. Arcane Archer layers a short-rest pool of Arcane Arrows on top, then asks you to choose the shot whose saving throw and secondary effect fit the target.

Arcane Archer is a Fighter first — the magic arrows are control tools

That distinction matters. Do not spend Arcane Shots as if they were ordinary damage buttons. A Banishing Arrow on the enemy whose next turn decides the fight, a Piercing Arrow through a line, or a Shadow Arrow that blinds a ranged threat can be worth more than squeezing another small rider into a target that was already dying.

Arcane Archer works best when the shot choice solves a positional or control problem, not only a damage problem.

Class

Fighter 12 — Arcane Archer

Keeps four feats and the level-11 third attack while reaching the full subclass shot package.

Primary

Secondary

Dexterity 16 → 18 → 20

Intelligence 16; Constitution 14

Attack rolls, bow damage, AC in light/medium armour and initiative.

INT drives Arcane Shot save DC; CON protects HP and concentration from item/spell effects.

Fighting Style

Archery

+2 ranged attack rolls directly offsets the risk of Sharpshooter.

Feat 1

Feat 2

Sharpshooter at Fighter 4

+2 Dexterity at Fighter 6

Core ranged damage toggle; disable it when hit chance is poor.

Stabilises accuracy and damage.

Feat 3

+2 Dexterity at Fighter 8

Reaches 20 DEX on the self-contained route.

Feat 4

Role

+2 Intelligence or Alert at Fighter 12

Ranged damage + save-targeted control

INT improves shot DC; Alert is stronger if first-turn control matters more.

Normal arrows handle routine turns; Arcane Shots handle priority turns.

Starting stats and skills

Use a no-quest-reward baseline: STR 8 / DEX 16 / CON 14 / INT 16 / WIS 12 / CHA

8. This gives Arcane Shot DC a real foundation without sacrificing the normal archer loop. If another source raises Dexterity, move the spared feat toward Intelligence or Alert instead of forcing the same chart.

Ability score decisions matter because Dexterity drives every normal arrow while Intelligence controls the Arcane Shot saving throws.

Character levelPick / featureWhat changes

1

Fighter 1 — Archery Fighting Style

The ranged baseline is online immediately; use a longbow/heavy crossbow and play for high ground and clean lines.

2

Action Surge

Once per Short Rest, take another Action. Save it for turns where extra attacks remove an enemy turn or boss phase.

3

Arcane Archer; 4 Arcane Arrows; choose 3 shots

Subclass identity arrives. Arcane Shot DC uses 8 + proficiency + Intelligence modifier.

4

Sharpshooter

Use the +10 damage toggle when accuracy is healthy; switch it off instead of accepting a terrible hit rate.

5

Extra Attack

Two attacks per Action. Arcane Shot still needs to be rationed, not attached to every arrow.

6

+2 Dexterity

A Fighter-only extra feat; use it to raise the core attack stat without delaying Sharpshooter.

7

Curving Shot, Magic Arrow; 7 Arcane Arrows; 4 shots known

Curving Shot gives a Bonus Action re-attack on the nearest target after a ranged miss.

8

+2 Dexterity

Reach 20 Dexterity on the no-permanent-bonus route.

9

Indomitable

Defensive insurance: reroll a failed save once per Long Rest.

10

10 Arcane Arrows; 5 shots known

The shot toolbox becomes broad enough to cover several save types and geometry problems.

11

Improved Extra Attack

Three weapon attacks per Action. This is the main reason not to abandon Fighter progression early.

12

+2 Intelligence or Alert

INT pushes Arcane Shot save DC; Alert is the alternative when first-turn tempo matters more.

Sharpshooter is the first major damage decision, but the All In toggle should be treated as a tool, not a permanent setting.

ShotSave / shape / Use it for

Banishing Arrow

Charisma save / Remove one high-value creature from the board temporarily; strongest when the enemy has weak CHA.

Shadow Arrow

Wisdom save / Blind an enemy and reduce its ranged reliability; useful against backline threats.

Piercing Arrow

Dexterity / line / Punish enemies standing in a line rather than tunnelling one target.

Grasping Arrow

Strength save / Control enemies that dislike being moved or need to be held in a bad position.

Seeking Arrow

Dexterity save / Pressure a hard-to-see target and apply Faerie Fire-style value.

Bursting Arrow

Beguiling / Enfeebling

Area / damage-focused / Use when several enemies are clustered and control is less important than area pressure.

Wisdom / Constitution / Niche answers when the target’s weak save makes the rider more valuable than raw damage.

The save is the decision. Examine the target, compare its Strength/Dexterity/Constitution/Intelligence/Wisdom/Charisma scores, then spend the scarce Arcane Arrow on the effect it is least likely to resist. Intelligence is therefore a real build stat, not flavour.

The Arcane Archer menu is a toolbox: build the shot list around different saves and battlefield shapes rather than six versions of the same damage rider.

Banishing Arrow is a late Arcane Shot option that rewards choosing targets with a weak Charisma save.

Slot / item | Where / timing | Why

Gloves of Archery | Goblin Camp trader | Simple ranged damage value on a bow user.

Bow of the Banshee | Grymforge route | Fear pressure can be more useful than a slightly larger damage die.

Titanstring Bow (optional) | Zhentarim / later fallback vendor routes | Excellent if the party deliberately supplies Strength; not mandatory for this Dexterity/INT guide.

Knife of the Undermountain King (off-hand utility) | Crèche trader | A crit-oriented utility piece if no melee character needs it more.

Best light/medium armour available | Act 1 | Keep AC and initiative healthy; the build does not need to force unarmoured play.

Act 2 is where Sharpshooter setups are tempted to chase every damage rider. Do not lose sight of the basic equation: a missed +10 hit still deals zero. Risky Ring can solve Advantage at a defensive cost; Drakethroat Glaive can buff the real bow without becoming your equipped ranged weapon; initiative and accuracy pieces can outperform a minor damage proc in hard fights.

Act 1 gear: accuracy before fancy riders / Act 2: preserve accuracy and action economy

Act 3 endpoints / Combat script: make each resource solve a different problem

Item | Why it fits

The Dead Shot | Excellent accuracy/crit-oriented universal bow endpoint.

Gontr Mael | Legendary longbow with strong utility and a safer all-round profile.

Armour of Agility | Premium high-Dex medium armour if the slot is not reserved for another party member.

Legacy of the Masters / accuracy gear | Helps keep Sharpshooter reliable when endgame AC rises.

Special arrows also become a major part of the build. Arcane Shots and consumable arrows solve different problems, so do not hoard one because the other exists. Use the cheap consumable when it answers the turn and preserve Arcane Arrows for the control effect or save profile you cannot replicate.

1. Start from high ground or a clean firing lane; do not spend Action Surge fixing bad positioning if movement before combat could have solved it.

2. Examine the priority target. Pick the Arcane Shot that attacks its weakest relevant save, not the one with the prettiest tooltip.

3. Use normal attacks and special arrows for routine targets. Arcane Arrows are a short-rest resource, so spend them on turns that change enemy behaviour.

4. If an attack misses after level 7, check Curving Shot before ending the turn; a Bonus Action re-attack can recover value without spending Action Surge.

5. Action Surge when the extra three attacks at Fighter 11 are likely to delete a dangerous creature, break concentration, or end a boss phase.

6. Reassess Sharpshooter every turn. If accuracy collapses against high AC, switch All In off and secure the hit.

Arcane Shot choices are strongest when the effect matches the target and battlefield rather than becoming a fixed rotation.

Honour Mode notes

  • Race is flexible. Wood Elf / Wood Half-Elf movement is excellent on an archer; Githyanki brings broad utility; Human is perfectly usable if you value the extra skill and equipment convenience.

  • Prioritise Perception and a Dexterity skill your party actually needs. Arcane Archer Lore grants Arcana and Nature at Fighter level 3, so do not waste early proficiency choices duplicating them.

  • Background should support the campaign role rather than the damage spreadsheet. Soldier, Folk Hero, Outlander and Urchin can all work depending on party skills.

  • Fighter 12 remains attractive because Improved Extra Attack and Action Surge are predictable and do not rely on action-economy exploits.

  • Initiative has extra value in single-save play. Alert can beat +2 INT if the party already debuffs enemy saves and the archer must act before dangerous bosses.

  • Save-targeted Arcane Shots are more reliable when you examine the enemy first. Honour punishes wasting a scarce resource into a strong save.

  • Do not build around a single contested Act 3 item. The subclass functions with ordinary bows because the engine is Fighter attacks + Arcane Shots, not one legendary.

VersionGainGive up / Use it when

Arcane Archer 12

Fourth Fighter feat and simplest progression

No War Priest bonus attacks / Default recommendation; self-contained and easy to maintain.

Arcane Archer 11 / War Cleric 1

A small number of War Priest bonus-action attacks and Cleric utility

One Fighter feat / You already solved DEX/INT/initiative and want another burst option more than the final feat.

Common mistakes

  • Dumping Intelligence because “Fighter only needs Dexterity,” then wondering why Arcane Shot riders rarely stick.

  • Leaving Sharpshooter All In enabled against an enemy you only hit on a coin flip.

  • Spending Arcane Arrows on trash enemies while special arrows or ordinary attacks would do the same job.

  • Multiclassing before Fighter 11 and delaying the third attack that makes the late build feel like a Fighter.; Taking five similar damage shots instead of covering several saves and battlefield shapes.

FAQ

  • Is Arcane Archer better than Battle Master? It solves different problems. Battle Master has broader manoeuvre utility; Arcane Archer is the dedicated magical ranged-control route.

  • Does Arcane Shot use Dexterity? The weapon attack uses Dexterity; the subclass saving throw DC uses Intelligence.

  • Is Sharpshooter mandatory? It is the strongest generic ranged damage feat, but the toggle should be disabled when accuracy is poor.

  • Do Arcane Arrows recharge on Short Rest? Yes, the subclass resource refills on Short or Long Rest.; Do I need Titanstring Bow? No. It is an optional Strength-synergy route, not the foundation of the build.
