A single infected is rarely the most dangerous thing in DayZ. The real cost is what the encounter removes from your run: clothing durability, blood, bandages, stamina, ammunition, noise discipline and attention.
Infected are an attrition problem
The safest infected fight is controlled one-on-one melee with enough stamina and an exit. The worst is several infected in a corner while your stamina is already low.
First decision: fight, avoid or trap
Before raising a weapon, ask whether the infected actually blocks your objective.
**Avoid** when the building is low value, several infected overlap, or another player may hear the fight.
**Fight** when one or two infected can be isolated and you need the route/loot.
**Trap or break contact** when a group is already aggroed. Buildings, doors, fences and elevation changes can create time to leave without spending ammunition.
One infected: block first, punish the recovery
For a basic melee fight on PC:
• raise fists or weapon;
• move backward while holding the defensive stance to block;
• let the infected finish its short attack sequence;
• stop retreating enough to step into range;
• attack during the recovery window;
• return to defense instead of spamming.
This rhythm is more reliable than racing the infected to the first hit.
Normal attack versus heavy attack
Heavy attacks cost more stamina but can create stagger and shorten the fight. Current 1.29 stable also increased crafted/blunt melee damage and damage transfer to infected/animals during the Road to Badlands cycle, so older “this tool takes X hits” claims are especially risky.
Use heavy attacks when:
• you still have a safe stamina reserve;
• the infected is isolated;
• the stagger creates a clean second hit.
Do not burn the stamina bar to zero trying to force a quick kill.
Aim for control, not a perfect headshot promise
Head hits are valuable, but animation, weapon reach and movement make rigid hit-count promises unreliable. Move close enough that the swing actually connects, keep the target in front of you and focus on not exposing your back or getting boxed into furniture.
Stealth is still a combat tool
Crouching, moving slowly and controlling noise can let you pass infected instead of fighting them. Gunshots are the opposite: even if the first infected dies instantly, the sound can pull additional infected and advertise your location to players.
A suppressed weapon is quieter than an unsuppressed firearm, but it should not replace basic aggro control.
Groups: do not stand and trade
Against multiple infected:
• keep moving toward an exit;
• avoid narrow corners that remove backward-block space;
• use doors and buildings to split the group;
• do not heavy-attack until stamina is gone;
• if you reach safety, bandage before re-engaging.
A door is often stronger than another melee weapon. If you can close several infected outside while you recover stamina and treat a cut, you have already won the encounter.
Stamina links directly to infected combat
G08 matters here. Heavy Attack needs 25 stamina, Sprint also needs 25, and Dodge needs a smaller reserve. A player who carries too much can lose both offense and escape options in the same fight.
This is why “just wear maximum armor and carry everything” is not a safe infected strategy.
What to do after the fight
Immediately check:
• bleeding icon;
• bandage/rag cleanliness;
• clothing condition;
• weapon/tool condition;
• stamina and nearby aggro;
• whether gunfire or noise may have drawn a player.
Treat the result before you start looting the corpse or building.
Common mistakes
• Swinging continuously instead of blocking.
• Walking backward forever and never stepping back into range.
• Heavy-attacking until you cannot sprint.
• Fighting three infected because the first one looked easy.
• Shooting an infected in a quiet town with no escape plan.
• Getting trapped between furniture and the infected.
• Looting immediately while another infected is still pathing toward the noise.
1.30 Experimental warning
Update 1.30 Experimental changes infected attack animations and introduces a running heavy attack animation. These experimental changes do not apply to the 1.29 stable mechanics described here.
