Vanilla rule of thumb: Pump/spring water is your trusted baseline. Unknown container water and surface water require caution. On Sakhal, heavy-metal contamination is a separate problem that chlorine alone does not solve.
Chernarus and Livonia: pumps are the routine clean source
Water pumps dispense clean water, can fill compatible containers and can wash bloody hands. Drink until your hydration is stable, but do not wait until the status icon is already critical before planning the next refill.
There is one important exception to the simple 'pump equals safe' rule: your own hands. Drinking directly with bloody or unclean hands can cause illness. Wash first, then drink.
Found bottles and canteens: empty first when in doubt
Spawned bottles and canteens can contain contaminated water. The safe, simple workflow is:
treat unknown contents as suspect;
empty them when you have access to a trusted source;
refill at a pump or clean spring;
only rely on purification when a trusted refill is not available.
This is why a half-full bottle is not automatically better than an empty one: the empty bottle may be the safer starting point.
Surface water: useful in pressure, not the default
Ponds, rivers and other natural sources can keep a run alive when no clean source is reachable, but they should trigger a purification decision. Chlorine Tablets are designed for pathogen-contaminated water and containers. They are not needed for already-clean pump water.
Sakhal: clean springs replace the normal pump habit
Sakhal has clean water springs that can be used directly and to refill containers. Their location pattern differs from Chernarus/Livonia pumps, so a Sakhal route should identify spring access early instead of assuming the next town will always have a standard pump.
Heavy Metal Poisoning changes the purification logic
Sakhal adds a second contamination problem: heavy metals. Snow and certain unsafe sources can expose the character to Heavy Metal Poisoning. This is not the same as ordinary cholera-style water contamination.
Chlorine and boiling do not remove Sakhal heavy metals. Prefer clean Water Springs. When contaminated snow/hot-spring water cannot be avoided, use current heavy-metal prevention such as the Filtering Bottle or correctly timed Chelating Tablets; do not treat Chelating Tablets as a universal “take one after anything” cure.
Container choice changes which purification methods are available
A Plastic Bottle is a storage container, not a boiling tool: it can be warmed/thawed but does not reach the boiling-water treatment state in a fireplace. A Canteen can be heated in a suitable fireplace/stove and can be used to boil water. Both can still be filled with unsafe water, so container type does not guarantee clean contents.
