Project Zomboid Trapping Guide: Baits, Zones and the Loaded-Square Rule in Build 42

Project Zomboid trapping guide for Build 42.20: the loaded-square catch rule that replaces the 75-tile myth, the two-roll catch formula with Trapping ×1.5, all six traps with craft gates and AutoLearn levels, bait weight tables, animal active hours (19:00–05:00 for rabbits), zone weights, live captures, and how Trapping XP is actually earned.

Trapping is Build 42's passive protein: set a line of traps in the evening, sleep, collect rabbits in the morning. It is also the skill with the most outdated advice in circulation — the famous "stay 75 tiles away" rule is not how the current build works, and half the bait numbers in older guides are Build 41 values. This guide uses Build 42 data throughout.

Quick answer

  • A baited trap rolls for a catch every in-game hour — but only while its map square is unloaded. Stand near your traps and nothing is being caught. Leave.

  • Rabbits, squirrels and raccoons are active 19:00–05:00; birds, mice and rats roll all day.

  • Bait must be fresh (rotten bait always fails) and must be a food that animal actually lists — cheese in a cage trap catches nothing, ever.

  • Best rabbit setup: Cage Trap (weight 40) + Carrots (45) in Deep Forest — still only roughly 13% per hour at Trapping

    0. Weights are not percentages.

  • Trapping XP is paid on harvest, to the trap's owner only.

How a catch actually rolls

Every hour, each baited trap on an unloaded square is checked against every animal the trap can catch, that lists your bait, finds it still fresh, and is inside its active hours. Each candidate faces two rolls, and both must pass:

  • Trap roll: random 0–99 < trap weight + bait weight + 1.5 × your Trapping level

  • Zone roll: random 0–99 < zone weight + 1.5 × your Trapping level

If several animals pass, one is picked at random — shared baits can hand you the "wrong" animal. The published worked example: Cage Trap (40) + Carrots (45) at Trapping 0 in Deep Forest (zone

15) passes the trap roll easily but the zone roll only 15% of the time — roughly 12.8% per hour overall. Anyone quoting "carrots = 45% catch chance" is reading a weight as a percentage.

Two failure channels explain most "empty trap" mysteries: bait can be stolen (roughly 1-in-(trap strength +

10) per check) and traps can break. A baitless trap in the morning usually means something ate your carrot at 2 a.m. — not that the zone is dead.

Two things guides get wrong: there is no separate "Bird Trap" item — birds come only from the Stick Trap — and a recipe must be known (magazine, AutoLearn, occupation/trait, TV) while some traps additionally demand a skill level to craft. AutoLearn order (Stick 2 → Crate 4 → Cage 5 → Snare 6 → Box

8) is not the craft-gate order.

Free head starts: on the default calendar, Day 6 (July

Baits: weights, not wishes

Only listed baits work for each animal — an unlisted food leaves the trap useless for that species. Top baits by weight:

Freshness is a hard check at the moment of the roll: rotten bait fails for every animal, mouse traps included. Re-bait after any morning where the bait vanished without a catch.

Zones and the nightly routine

  • Rabbit / Squirrel / Raccoon — Deep Forest and Organic Forest (zone 15), other forests (12), Vegetation (10); Town (2) is a desperation play. Bait before 19:00, leave overnight, check after 05:00.

  • Small Bird — Farm Land (35), Town and Vegetation (30); Stick Trap, any hour.

  • Mouse / Rat — Farm Land (60/50), Trailer Park (60/40), Town (50/30); Mouse Trap, any hour.

Run a line, not a trap: bait theft and breakage are built into the maths — one trap is a lottery ticket, six are a food system. Place them on open ground (traps hugging walls or fences can lose bait and catches when the square loads), away from your base door: a caught animal makes noise, and zombies can destroy traps. Mark the line on your map and check promptly: strong animals can break out, and a dead catch is perishable food.

Build 42 adds live captures: rabbits, mice, rats and raccoons can come out of the trap alive, ready for pens and breeding — the bridge to animal husbandry. Dead catches go to the kitchen via butchering.

Levelling Trapping

XP lands when the trap's owner collects the animal — roughly proportional to the catch, live removals worth notably more (community data: a few XP per corpse, around 10–20 per live capture). Nobody else gets XP from your trap, and crafting traps is not a meaningful source. Read the Trapping skill books (×3 to ×16 ladder) to multiply harvest XP, and let volume do the rest — a ten-trap line checked daily out-levels any trick.

FAQ

How far away do I need to be from my traps?

Far enough that the square unloads — roughly the old 75-tile rule of thumb in single player, but the game checks loaded vs unloaded, not distance. Go home and sleep; don't hover.

Why did my rabbit traps catch nothing all day?

Because rabbits, squirrels and raccoons only roll between 19:00 and 05:00. A trap baited at noon and checked at 18:00 has had zero eligible hours. Bait before dusk, check after dawn.

Can zombies or other animals steal my bait?

Bait disappears through the game's own theft/decay check (roughly 1-in-(strength +

10) per check), and trapped animals attract zombies, which can wreck traps. Re-bait and reset instead of concluding the zone is empty.

Do skill books teach me trap recipes?

No — books only multiply XP. Recipes come from the three magazines, AutoLearn levels, the Exposure Survival broadcast/VHS (crate), or occupation/trait grants like Park Ranger and Hiker.

What changed versus Build 41 trapping?

Almost every number: trap weights rose (Cage 30→40, most others 20→30), bait weights rose (Carrots 25→45, Cheese 40→60), the distance rule became the loaded-square rule, magazines dropped their "Vol. 1–3" names, Park Ranger starts at +1 Trapping instead of +2 — plus raccoons and live captures are new.
