Death Domain turns the Cleric into a necrotic pressure caster without deleting the class’s best support tools. Reaper lets a qualifying single-target Necromancy cantrip strike a second nearby target, Touch of Death turns a melee hit into a large Channel Divinity burst, and Inescapable Destruction eventually lets your necrotic damage ignore **resistance**. You still keep Bless, Aid, Spirit Guardians, Death Ward, Heal, Heroes’ Feast and Planar Ally. The result is a character who can open with control/support, punish clustered enemies with necrotic cantrips and still switch back to ordinary Cleric duties when the encounter demands it.
Death Cleric is not “evil Life Cleric”
The default is **Death Cleric 12**. It is less exotic than a 9 Death Cleric / 2 Spore Druid / 1 Storm Sorcerer setup, but it keeps third feat access and level-6 Cleric spells. An advanced multiclass option is included later so you can see the trade instead of being told that multiclass is automatically superior.
Death Domain is selected at Cleric level 1, so the subclass identity starts immediately.

| Build slot | Recommendation / Reason |
|---|---|
Class | Death Cleric 12 / Full Cleric spell progression, three feats and simple preparation. |
Abilities | STR 8 / DEX 16 / CON 15 / INT 8 / WIS 17 / CHA 8 / Level-4 split ASI fixes both Wisdom and Constitution. |
Feat 1 | +1 WIS / +1 CON at level 4 / 18 Wisdom, 16 Constitution. |
Feat 2 | +2 WIS at level 8 / 20 Wisdom for DC and prepared spells. |
Feat 3 | War Caster or Alert at level 12 / Concentration security or initiative. |
Armour Role | Medium armour + shield by default / DEX 16 works well with strong medium armour; shield keeps AC healthy. Necrotic pressure + Cleric support/control / Damage is a lane, not an excuse to stop casting the best Cleric spell for the fight. |

| Level | Pick | Feature / spells / Practical effect |
|---|---|---|
1 | Cleric 1 | Death Domain, Reaper, martial weapons; choose Bone Chill / Toll the Dead; False Life + Ray of Sickness / Start doubling qualifying Necromancy cantrips into clustered targets. |
2 | Cleric 2 | Channel Divinity: Touch of Death / After a melee hit, convert Channel Divinity into a meaningful necrotic burst. |
3 | Cleric 3 | 2nd-level spells; domain Blindness + Ray of Enfeeblement / Aid and Spiritual Weapon round out the normal Cleric toolkit. |
4 | Cleric 4 | ASI +1 WIS / +1 CON / Reach WIS 18 and CON 16 without permanent story bonuses. |
5 | Cleric 5 | Spirit Guardians; domain Animate Dead + Vampiric Touch / Major spike: mobile aura, summon setup and a necrotic concentration option. |
6 | Cleric 6 | Inescapable Destruction / Your necrotic damage ignores Resistance; immunity still matters. |
7 | Cleric 7 | 4th-level spells; domain Blight + Death Ward / Death Ward is both thematic and genuinely valuable insurance. |
8 | Cleric 8 | Divine Strike: Necrotic; ASI +2 WIS / 20 Wisdom; melee hits can add necrotic once per turn. |
9 | Cleric 9 | 5th-level spells; domain Cloudkill + Contagion / High-level control/damage options join the prepared list. |
10 | Cleric 10 | Divine Intervention / One-time campaign resource; do not spend it casually. |
11 | Cleric 11 | 6th-level Cleric spells / Heroes’ Feast, Heal and Planar Ally are major reasons to stay pure. |
12 | Cleric 12 | War Caster or Alert / Solve concentration or initiative based on the actual gear set. |
Reaper and the Death cantrip package make the level-1 subclass immediately different from other Clerics.
Reaper is best when two valid targets stand close enough for one Necromancy cantrip to hit both. That makes Bone Chill useful beyond raw damage because it also blocks healing; Toll the Dead is excellent into already-damaged targets when its save and positioning are favourable. Do not force Reaper when only one high-value enemy matters - the subclass feature is a bonus, not a reason to cast the wrong spell.
Touch of Death is a Channel Divinity rider after a melee hit. It is strongest when you can safely land the hit without abandoning positioning or concentration. At Cleric 6, Inescapable Destruction makes Death Domain necrotic damage ignore **Resistance**, which removes one common late-game tax. It does **not** mean necrotic immunity stops existing. Against immune enemies, pivot to Radiant, control, buffs or weapon/support actions instead of repeatedly casting zero-damage theme spells.
Reaper, Touch of Death and the “necrotic resistance” rule
Touch of Death is a real Channel Divinity burst, but it still requires you to justify entering melee.
Vampiric Touch is thematic sustain, but concentration means it competes with Spirit Guardians and other anchors.
Job | Spells / tools | Use case
Accuracy / support | Bless, Aid, Healing Word, Sanctuary | Enable party damage, raise durability, emergency pickup or protect an objective.
Control | Command, Blindness, Hold Person when prepared/available | Delete enemy actions without using necrotic damage at all.
Core aura | Spirit Guardians | One of Cleric’s best action-economy spells; use when safe to occupy midrange.
Death theme | Bone Chill / Toll the Dead, Animate Dead, Vampiric Touch, Blight | Pressure clustered targets, summon bodies, or lean into necrotic damage.
Endgame support | Death Ward, Heroes’ Feast, Heal, Planar Ally | Pre-fight insurance and high-impact recovery/summoning.
Spell preparation: keep a Cleric toolbox, not a necromancy cosplay list / Act 1 gear: survive concentration first / Act 2 and Act 3 gear priorities
Spirit Guardians remains a premier Cleric combat plan even on Death Domain; the subclass adds options rather than replacing the base class.
Item / slot | Why it fits
Blood of Lathander | Excellent Act 1 utility mace; the build values its defensive/radiant utility even when the theme is necrotic.
Shield + strong medium armour | Reliable AC while WIS carries spell DC.
Luminous Armour (optional Radiant Orb lane) | Spirit Guardians can support a Radiant Orb package if your party wants debuffing over strict theme.
Boots of Stormy Clamour | Useful in reverberation/debuff setups when your spell package applies conditions.
Blood of Lathander is a utility weapon, not a contradiction: good Clerics change tools when the encounter changes.
By Act 2, gear that raises Spell Save DC, protects concentration or improves initiative is usually more valuable than another small weapon-damage rider. Ketheric’s Shield is a natural late-Act-2 caster shield because it improves spell attacks/save DC while preserving shield defence. In Act 3, **Amulet of the Devout** is one of the cleanest Cleric pieces (+Spell Save DC and more Channel Divinity access), while **Markoheshkir** provides spellcasting bonuses and Arcane Battery if another caster is not using it.
Markoheshkir is an endgame caster tool: spell accuracy/DC and free-cast utility matter more than staff melee damage.
Encounter shape | Opening plan | Follow-up
Many melee enemies | Spirit Guardians if you can safely hold concentration | Move through clusters; use Healing Word/Command as needed.
Two clustered low/mid HP targets | Reaper cantrip | Double Bone Chill/Toll value without spending a high slot.
Single priority target | Control/buff first; Touch of Death only if melee is safe | Use party focus fire rather than chasing thematic necrotic casts.
Necrotic-resistant enemies | At level 6+, use Death features normally | Inescapable Destruction ignores resistance.
Necrotic-immune enemies | Switch damage type / support role | Resistance bypass does not override immunity.
Death Domain works best when necrotic pressure and ordinary Cleric support are treated as two lanes of the same build.
Combat plans by encounter / Pure Death Cleric 12 vs advanced 9 / 2 / 1 multiclass
Version | Strength | Trade-off
Death Cleric 12 | Three feats, level-6 Cleric spells, simple prepared-spell progression | Less exotic action-economy/utility stacking.
Death Cleric 9 / Spore Druid 2 / Storm Sorcerer 1 | More specialised necrotic/support interactions and mobility/utility | Gives up Cleric 10-12 progression, including pure-class capstone resources and level-6 Cleric spell access.
The multiclass above is an optimisation-style variant seen on current specialist sites such as Gamestegy. Use it if you understand exactly why you want those dips. For a guide that must remain robust across parties and difficulty modes, pure 12 is the safer default.
Concentration protection matters more than squeezing one extra necrotic rider. Losing Spirit Guardians to the first hit is a full-turn economy loss.
Alert becomes attractive if the party needs Cleric control/buffs before enemies and Legendary Actions start snowballing.
Do not walk into melee only to force Touch of Death. Channel Divinity is not worth losing concentration or getting surrounded.
Remember necrotic immunity. “Ignores resistance” is not “ignores immunity”.
Animate Dead is strongest when prepared before the fight. Summoning after initiative starts spends an expensive combat Action.
Is Death Domain only for an evil run? No. Mechanics do not require an evil alignment; the theme may fit some role-play better than others.
Should Death Cleric still use Spirit Guardians? Yes. The base Cleric spell list remains one of the class’s greatest strengths.
Does Inescapable Destruction ignore necrotic immunity? No, it bypasses resistance, not immunity.
Is pure Cleric 12 viable? Yes. It is the default recommendation here precisely because it keeps full Cleric progression.
