Baldur's Gate 3 College of Glamour Bard Build: Control, Mantles & Gear

College of Glamour is a party-control Bard, not a weaker Lore Bard with prettier animations. Mantle of Inspiration converts one Bardic Inspiration and a Bonus Action into temporary hit points for multiple allies; melee attackers who hit those protected allies can become Charmed. At level 6, Mantle of Majesty can be activated once per Long Rest and requires Concentration for up to 10 turns.

While it lasts, you can cast a Mantle Command variant as a Bonus Action each turn; a target that is already Charmed automatically fails the saving throw. That makes the subclass excellent at protecting several allies and deleting enemy turns, but Mantle cannot coexist with Hypnotic Pattern, Confusion, Haste or another Concentration spell.

What Glamour Bard does that Lore and Swords do not

The recommended baseline is **Bard 12**. You keep full Bard spell progression, three feats, Magical Secrets at level 10 and the maximum Mantle scaling. Multiclassing can be powerful, but a guide to Glamour Bard should first show what the subclass itself does before replacing half of it with Paladin or Sorcerer levels.

Glamour Bard is strongest when it controls the battlefield while still functioning as the party face.

LevelClassPick / Why it matters

Bard 1

Vicious Mockery; Healing Word, Dissonant Whispers, Longstrider, Tasha’s Hideous Laughter / Faerie Fire / Start as party face; learn to use Healing Word as emergency pickup, not routine topping-off.

2

Bard 2

Jack of All Trades, Song of Rest / Song of Rest effectively adds another short-rest-style recovery to the party.

3

Bard 3

College of Glamour; Mantle of Inspiration; Expertise; 2nd-level spells / Take Hold Person or Cloud of Daggers according to party needs. Mantle protects two allies for 5 temp HP.

4

Bard 4

ASI +2 CHA (18) / Raise control DC; add a utility cantrip/spell rather than overloading concentration options.

5

Bard 5

Font of Inspiration; d8 Inspiration; 3rd-level spells / Bardic Inspiration now refreshes on Short Rest. Take Hypnotic Pattern and/or Glyph of Warding.

6

Bard 6

Mantle of Majesty; Mantle now 3 allies / 8 temp HP / Once per Long Rest, Bonus Action Command becomes the subclass’s signature control turn.

7

Bard 7

4th-level spells / Confusion is a strong crowd-control choice; Dimension Door is premium rescue/mobility.

8

Bard 8

ASI +2 CHA (20) / Your save DC and social checks hit the intended endgame baseline.

9

Bard 9

5th-level spells / Hold Monster gives a high-value single-target answer; add another spell for party gaps.

10

Bard 10

Magical Secrets x2; Expertise; d10 Inspiration; Mantle 4 allies / 11 temp HP / Default Magical Secrets: Counterspell + a party-need pick such as Conjure Elemental or Haste.

11

Bard 11

6th-level spells / Otto’s Irresistible Dance or Eyebite provides late-game control.

12

Bard 12

War Caster or Alert / Protect concentration or guarantee early control, depending on gear and initiative.

Bardic Inspiration is the resource Mantle of Inspiration spends; from Bard 5 it refreshes on Short Rest.

Mantle of Inspiration: use it for tempo, not just temp HP / Mantle of Majesty: the level-6 control spike

At Bard 3, Mantle of Inspiration targets two allies and grants each 5 temporary hit points. If a protected ally is hit by a melee attack, the attacker becomes Charmed. At level 6 the Mantle reaches three allies and 8 temp HP; at level 10 it reaches four allies and 11 temp HP. The obvious value is party-wide cushioning, but the better reason to press it is **tempo**: one Bonus Action can make several melee attackers less reliable while leaving the Bard’s Action open for Hypnotic Pattern, Glyph of Warding or another encounter-defining spell.

Temporary hit points do not stack with other temporary HP pools. Also, effects that trigger specifically from the normal Bardic Inspiration die do not necessarily trigger from Mantle of Inspiration. The Cap of Curing is a good example: it supports ordinary Bardic Inspiration, not Mantle’s temp-HP package. Do not copy a generic Bard item list without checking which resource the item actually watches.

Mantle of Majesty is a once-per-Long-Rest **activation**, not a one-command button. Activating it uses Concentration and can last up to 10 turns. While it remains active, the Bard can cast Flee, Approach, Grovel, Drop or Halt as a **Bonus Action every turn**. A target already Charmed automatically fails that Command save. The trade-off matters: Mantle itself occupies Concentration, so you cannot keep Hypnotic Pattern, Confusion, Haste or another Concentration spell running at the same time.

The normal Command menu shows the same Flee / Approach / Grovel / Drop / Halt command family reused by Mantle of Majesty.

Tier | Core picks | When to use them

Early | Dissonant Whispers, Tasha’s Hideous Laughter, Healing Word, Longstrider | Single-target disruption, emergency recovery and all-day mobility.

2nd level | Hold Person, Cloud of Daggers | Humanoid lockdown or damage zone when enemies are constrained.

3rd level | Hypnotic Pattern, Glyph of Warding | Large-area control versus a flexible non-concentration-ish damage/condition tool.

4th level | Confusion, Dimension Door | Crowd disruption or guaranteed reposition/rescue.

5th level | Hold Monster | Boss/elite control when target type permits.

Magical Secrets | Counterspell + party-specific pick | Counterspell solves enemy caster turns; second pick should fill a real group gap.

6th level | Otto’s Irresistible Dance / Eyebite | Late-game control where one enemy turn is more valuable than another damage spell.

Hypnotic Pattern is a typical “win the room” concentration spell; cast it when many enemies can lose turns at once.

Magical Secrets at Bard 10 should fill an actual party gap instead of copying a universal list.

Act | Items / priorities | Reason

Act 1 | Cap of Curing for normal Inspiration use; Phalar Aluve if party utility matters; general initiative/AC pieces | Early Bard is about actions and party value, not weapon rarity. Mantle itself does not trigger Cap of Curing.

Late Act 1 / Grymforge | Wondrous Gloves | +1 AC and an extra Bardic Inspiration charge is directly relevant to a Mantle build.

Act 2 | Boots of Brilliance; save-DC or initiative gear | Boots can restore Bardic Inspiration once per Long Rest; control wants to act early.

Act 3 | Hood of the Weave, Cloak of the Weave, top spell-save gear | Your endgame job is landing control before enemies take meaningful turns.

Control spell package: prepare different answers, not six concentration spells / Gear by act: prioritise save DC, initiative and Bardic Inspiration economy

5. Use Healing Word to pick up a downed ally; do not spend every Bard turn healing chip damage.

4. In a fight worth the once-per-Long-Rest Mantle of Majesty activation, start the 10-turn Concentration state and use its Bonus Action Command each round. Your Action remains free for attacks, cantrips or non-Concentration spells; starting a different Concentration spell ends Mantle of Majesty.

3. Action: cast the control spell that removes the most dangerous enemy turns, not the spell with the highest tooltip damage.

2. If several allies will take melee pressure, Bonus Action Mantle of Inspiration before committing the Action.

1. Before combat, Longstrider the party and decide which concentration spell would actually win this encounter.

The Bard fantasy is not only spell menus: the class remains a social performer and party face outside combat.

6. Short Rest aggressively after important fights because Font of Inspiration makes the subclass much less dependent on hoarding Bardic charges.

A practical combat script / Charm immunity and Honour Mode adjustments

Charm-heavy plans are encounter-sensitive. Some enemies, undead-heavy sections and specific bosses do not care about Charmed, so Mantle of Majesty cannot rely on the auto-fail interaction every fight. The Bard is still fine: the temp HP from Mantle remains useful, and the base spell list includes control that does not depend on charm.

  • In Honour Mode, initiative is often stronger than a marginal damage item because landing Hypnotic Pattern or Counterspell before a Legendary Action chain starts can save the run.

  • Do not stack Haste and another concentration spell mentally as if both can be maintained. Magical Secrets should reflect the actual party composition.

  • Keep Counterspell reactions on Ask. Automatic Counterspell can burn high-value spell slots on low-impact casts.

  • Activate Mantle of Majesty only in a fight that deserves the once-per-Long-Rest resource. The activation is limited, but its Bonus Action Command is repeatable each turn while Mantle remains active.; Treating Mantle of Inspiration as ordinary Bardic Inspiration for item procs.

  • Building six concentration spells and having no answer when one is already active.

  • Treating Mantle of Majesty as a single Command, or trying to maintain it alongside another Concentration spell.

  • Picking Haste via Magical Secrets when another party member already provides it and the Bard needs Counterspell/control instead.

  • Ignoring Dexterity/initiative because Charisma is the primary stat.; Is College of Glamour a healer? It can support and emergency-heal, but its real strength is multi-ally temp HP plus enemy-turn control.

  • Does Mantle of Inspiration heal? No; it grants temporary HP.

  • When does Bardic Inspiration refresh on Short Rest? Bard level 5 via Font of Inspiration.

  • What are the safest Magical Secrets? Counterspell is the default recommendation; the second spell should solve a real party gap.; Is Bard 12 viable? Yes. The subclass is complete without multiclassing.

Pure Bard 12 versus multiclassing / Common mistakes / FAQ

Bard/Paladin and Bard/Sorcerer multiclasses are famous because they buy burst or Metamagic, but they are different builds. Pure Glamour 12 keeps the third feat, level-6 Bard spells, full Mantle scaling and a clean level curve. If the reason you opened this page was to play **College of Glamour**, pure 12 is the default; multiclass only after you can name the exact feature you are giving up and buying.
