Gloom Stalker 3 gives +3 Initiative, +3 m movement on turn one and a separate Dread Ambusher attack with +1d8 damage. Ranger 5 adds Extra Attack. Assassin 3 rewards acting before enemies and can turn attacks on Surprised targets into critical hits, while Assassin’s Alacrity can restore the Action/Bonus Action used to initiate combat. Fighter 2 supplies Action Surge, and War Cleric 1 adds a limited Bonus Action weapon attack through War Priest.
The build wins the first turn — but a good first turn is not the same thing as blind pre-combat murder
That package is famous because it can front-load a large number of attacks. Surprise is an optional combat plan when the encounter is already hostile or you deliberately accept the story consequence. Attacking every NPC from stealth can erase dialogue, merchants and companion routes. In conversations, bosses and scripted fights where Surprise is unavailable, the build is still a high-initiative Sharpshooter archer.
Gloom Stalker’s first-turn advantage comes from initiative, movement and Dread Ambusher — it still functions when Surprise is unavailable.

| Slot | Recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
Final split | Gloom Stalker 5 / Assassin 4 / Fighter 2 / War Cleric 1 | Keeps Extra Attack, Assassin opener, two feats, Action Surge and War Priest attacks. |
Starting stats | STR 8 / DEX 16 / CON 14 / INT 8 / WIS 16 / CHA 12 | DEX drives bow/initiative; WIS supports Ranger spells and later War Cleric utility. |
Ranger style | Archery | +2 ranged attack rolls supports Sharpshooter. |
Feat 1 | Sharpshooter at Ranger 4 | Core ranged damage toggle. |
Feat 2 Core opener | +2 Dexterity at Rogue 4 Dread Ambusher + normal attacks + optional Surprise | Raise DEX to 18 on the self-contained route. The subclass already goes early; Surprise is a bonus, not the entire build. |
Gloom Stalker is chosen at Ranger 3 and immediately adds Dread Ambusher, Umbral Shroud and Superior Darkvision.

8 | Rogue 3 | Assassin / Assassin’s Alacrity; Advantage before target acts; crits on Surprised creatures. |
9 | Rogue 4 | +2 Dexterity / Second feat and a cleaner late-game hit chance. |
10 | Fighter 1 | Second Wind; Defence or utility Fighting Style / Small defensive/gear benefit. |
11 | Fighter 2 | Action Surge / Another Action on the opening or boss-burst turn. |
12 | War Cleric 1 | War Priest; Cleric utility / Three War Priest charges per Long Rest can buy Bonus Action weapon attacks. |
Assassin adds first-turn tools after the Ranger 5 core is already online; the multiclass should not delay Extra Attack.
Dread Ambusher is a separate first-turn attack
At Gloom Stalker 3, Dread Ambusher grants +3 Initiative and +3 m movement on the first turn, plus a separate melee or ranged attack dealing an additional 1d8 weapon damage. The Dread Ambusher attack is a distinct button and its use removes the temporary movement condition, so move into the firing position before spending the ambush attack if you still need that extra 3 m.
Patch 8 can sometimes behave oddly when Dread Ambusher is used as the very first attack. It remains a separate first-turn attack button. If your client behaves strangely, open with a normal attack and use the Dread Ambusher button afterwards rather than relying on the bug.
Assassin: what Surprise actually changes
Assassinate: Initiative gives Advantage on attack rolls against creatures that have not taken a turn yet. Against Surprised creatures, the Assassin’s ambush package can create automatic criticals. Assassin’s Alacrity can restore the Action and Bonus Action used to initiate combat, although combat-start recognition can be inconsistent in edge cases.
None of that means you should surprise-attack every NPC. If a conversation gives quest information, approval, vendors or peaceful routes, the build is not improved by deleting that content. Use Surprise when the target is already an enemy, when you have deliberately chosen the hostile route, or when Honour safety matters more than seeing a dialogue branch.
A roof, darkness and a clean first shot can create a strong opener — but surprise is a tactical choice, not a mandatory role-play rule.
Sharpshooter and stealth / Act 1 gear
Sharpshooter: All In gives +10 damage for -5 to the attack roll. Archery recovers two of those attack-roll points, Advantage from stealth/Assassin can recover consistency, and late accuracy gear helps more. Still, switch the toggle off against high AC when the expected value turns bad. The build already has many attacks; converting them into misses is not a damage strategy.
Stealth advantage and Sharpshooter can coexist, but hit chance should still decide whether All In stays enabled.
Item / slot | Why
Titanstring Bow (optional Strength support) | Extremely strong if the party supplies Strength through an elixir/Club; otherwise use a normal strong bow.
Bow of the Banshee / good longbow | Control/accuracy alternative that does not require a Strength plan.
Gloves of Archery | Simple ranged damage.
Knife of the Undermountain King | Global critical-threshold utility if another build does not need it more.
Graceful Cloth / medium armour route | Choose between DEX utility and better AC; Ranger already has armour options.
Risky Ring can provide reliable Advantage at the cost of saving-throw Disadvantage — a real Honour trade, not a free upgrade. Yuan-Ti Scale Mail is excellent on a high-Dex Ranger, Drakethroat Glaive can buff the real bow, and initiative/crit pieces help the opener. Keep special arrows stocked; an Arrow of Many Targets or control arrow can be more valuable than preserving every consumable for Act 3.

| Item | Role |
|---|---|
The Dead Shot | High accuracy / crit-oriented universal bow. |
Gontr Mael | Legendary bow with strong general utility. |
Armour of Agility Bhaalist Armour on an ally (party option) | Premium high-Dex medium armour. Aura of Murder can multiply Piercing damage if another character safely applies it in melee; do not force the archer to stand in 3 m range. |
Opening turn
1. Before combat, decide whether the encounter should be initiated from stealth at all; do not erase dialogue by habit.
2. If stealth initiation is appropriate, position at range/high ground and make sure the party will join the fight rather than staying out of combat.
3. Use normal attacks/Assassin timing so your client preserves the full Dread Ambusher value; then spend the Dread Ambusher Ranged action before ending turn one.
4. Apply Sharpshooter only while hit chance remains acceptable.
5. Use Action Surge when another full Attack Action deletes a priority target or boss phase.
6. Spend a War Priest Bonus Action attack only when the Bonus Action is not needed for Hide, movement, Hunter’s Mark or another more important action.
Umbral Shroud and post-opener play
Umbral Shroud can make the Gloom Stalker Invisible while obscured and recharges on a Short Rest. It is not a permanent combat stealth button: light, enemy sight and actions can reveal you. After the first-turn burst, the build becomes a normal high-Dex archer with Cunning Action, Misty Step and good initiative. Treat that sustained plan as part of the build rather than calling every non-surprise round a failure.
Umbral Shroud is a short-rest invisibility tool in obscured areas; it supports repositioning, not guaranteed permanent stealth.
Honour Mode notes
Do not gamble the campaign on a surprise opener that might drag a neutral hub into combat. Story consequence is a combat risk.
Action Surge remains a predictable burst resource. War Priest charges trigger before attacks from a second Action, so check Bonus Action priorities when Action Surge is active.
Risky Ring’s saving-throw Disadvantage is much more dangerous when one failed control effect can end a run.
Initiative is already excellent from Dread Ambusher; Alert is less mandatory than on slower builds.
Keep an escape/invisibility route. A stealth archer that cannot leave a failed pull is not Honour-safe.

| Version | Gain | Give up |
|---|---|---|
5 Gloom / 4 Assassin / 2 Fighter / 1 War Cleric | Huge opener, Assassin tools, Action Surge, Bonus Action attacks | Ranger 7 Iron Mind, Ranger 9 Fear, Ranger 11 Stalker’s Flurry and higher Ranger progression. |
Gloom Stalker 12 | Iron Mind, Fear, Stalker’s Flurry, three feats and simple spell progression | Assassin crit opener, Action Surge and War Priest burst. |
Common mistakes
Multiclassing before Ranger 5 and delaying Extra Attack.
Starting every conversation with an arrow because a build guide said Surprise is optimal.
Leaving Sharpshooter on at 40–50% hit chance.
Spending the Bonus Action on War Priest when you actually needed Hide/Misty Step/Hunter’s Mark.
Assuming turn two is irrelevant — many Honour bosses survive the opener.
FAQ
Why Assassin instead of Thief? Assassin maximises the first-turn/surprise identity; Thief is a better sustained Bonus Action build.
Is Surprise required? No. Gloom Stalker still has +3 Initiative and Dread Ambusher in normal combat.
Why War Cleric 1? Three War Priest charges give limited Bonus Action weapon attacks after the main martial engine is complete.
Why not Ranger 11? Pure Gloom gets Stalker’s Flurry and is a strong alternative; this page is specifically the multiclass opener build.
What bow should I use? Titanstring is excellent with a deliberate Strength plan; otherwise Bow of the Banshee, The Dead Shot and Gontr Mael are clean options across progression.
