Swarmkeeper’s Gathered Swarm triggers once per round after you attack. That is the subclass’s real action economy: the bow hit is only the first half of the turn. Bees can add piercing damage, push an enemy or teleport you; Jellyfish can add lightning damage, Shock or teleport; Moths can add psychic damage, Blind or teleport. Prey’s Scent also adds swarm damage against a Hunter’s Mark target.
Swarmkeeper is an archer that turns one successful attack into a second decision
The default build is pure Ranger 12 because level 11 Mighty Swarm materially upgrades every swarm: damage improves, utility gets a second rider, and the teleport grants temporary AC. The result is a control archer that can keep the battlefield at bow range without pretending Ranger is a full caster.
Swarmkeeper adds visible swarm VFX and a once-per-round control choice after a successful attack.

| Slot | Recommendation | Reason |
|---|---|---|
Class Primary Secondary | Swarmkeeper Ranger 12 Dexterity 16 → 18 → 20 Wisdom 16; Constitution 14 | Reaches Mighty Swarm at 11 and keeps three feats. Ranged accuracy, bow damage, AC and initiative. Spell/feature DC and concentration for Hunter’s Mark / Spike Growth. |
Fighting Style Feat 1 Feat 2 | Archery Sharpshooter at Ranger 4 +2 Dexterity at Ranger 8 | The safest universal ranged accuracy bonus. Main damage toggle; disable against bad hit chances. Keeps normal attacks reliable. |
Feat 3 Default swarm Role | +2 Dexterity / Alert at Ranger 12 Legion of Bees Control archer | Finish DEX or take first-turn control if another source already solved it. Push is easy to understand and pairs naturally with Spike Growth / ledges. Attack → swarm decision → terrain/position management. |
The Swarmkeeper selection screen makes the subclass choice explicit: the swarm is a mechanical control package, not a cosmetic pet.
You choose one swarm and normally change it when levelling. Do not treat the selection like a cosmetic pet. Pick the control rider your party lacks. The swarm options do not consume your normal Reaction, despite appearing as follow-up prompts in combat.
The level-3 Gathered Swarm choice changes the utility you can apply after attacking each round.

| Swarm | Damage | Utility / When to pick |
|---|---|---|
Legion of Bees | Piercing | Push target / teleport self / Best default for ledges, Spike Growth and simple forced movement. |
Cloud of Jellyfish | Lightning | Shock target / teleport self / Good when the party can exploit lightning or when Shock matters. |
Flurry of Moths | Psychic | Blind target / teleport self / Excellent defensive control against attack-roll enemies. |
Use STR 8 / DEX 16 / CON 14 / INT 8 / WIS 16 / CHA
10. If your protagonist is the party face, shift the spare points as needed; Dexterity and Wisdom are the build’s actual combat pair. Bounty Hunter and Keeper of the Veil are examples of useful Favoured Enemy packages, while Natural Explorer should fill a resistance/skill gap rather than copy an internet list blindly.
Prey’s Scent makes the swarm hit harder against Hunter’s Mark targets, but marking still has a Bonus Action and concentration cost.
Level 1–12 progression

| Level | Pick / feature | What changes |
|---|---|---|
1 | Ranger 1 — Archery; Favoured Enemy / Natural Explorer | The archer chassis and utility identity begin immediately. |
2 | Ranger spellcasting | Longstrider and Hunter’s Mark are the important early tools. |
3 | Swarmkeeper; Gathered Swarm; Prey’s Scent | Choose Bees/Jellyfish/Moths; the once-per-round swarm decision becomes the subclass loop. |
4 | Sharpshooter | Use All In only when accuracy supports it. |
5 | Extra Attack; Spike Growth; Web always prepared | The build can now create terrain and then force enemies through it. |
6 | Favoured Enemy / Natural Explorer improvement | Fill a party resistance or exploration gap. |
7 | Writhing Currents / Writhing Tide | Three long-rest charges of Bonus Action flight with surface immunity. |
8 | +2 Dexterity | Accuracy, AC and damage rise together. |
9 | Gaseous Form; fourth Writhing Tide charge | More infiltration/mobility utility. |
10 | Hide in Plain Sight / exploration progression | Base Ranger utility continues; subclass is waiting for the level-11 spike. |
11 | Mighty Swarm | Damage becomes 1d8; special effects improve; teleport also grants +2 AC for the round. |
12 | +2 Dexterity or Alert | Finish the pure build with the third feat. |
Swarmkeeper remains a full Ranger progression; the subclass layers its swarm follow-up on top of normal attacks and spells.
Mighty Swarm is the reason to care about Ranger 11 / Terrain combos: the bow is only half the control
At level 11 the swarm stops being a cute 1d6 side effect. Its normal attack scales to 1d8, teleport gives +2 AC for the rest of the round, and each utility mode gains another effect: Jellyfish can Shock and Disarm, Moths can Blind and Slow, and Bees can push farther and knock Prone. This is the strongest argument for a pure or nearly-pure Swarmkeeper rather than leaving the class at level 5 or 7.
Spike Growth changes forced movement from “move the enemy a few metres” into real battlefield damage and denial. Put the zone where enemies must cross it, then use Bees or other party pushes to send them back through the hazard. Web is another always-prepared subclass tool at Ranger 5; use it when restraint/control matters more than maintaining Hunter’s Mark.
This also means concentration is a choice. Hunter’s Mark, Spike Growth and other concentration spells cannot all coexist. A weak guide says “always Mark.” A real turn asks whether the target’s extra damage matters more than a terrain spell that can deny several enemy turns.
Gear by act
Stage | Examples | Priority
Act 1 | Bow of the Banshee; Titanstring as an optional Strength-synergy route; Gloves of Archery | Accuracy and useful bow passives before chasing exotic riders.
Act 2 | Risky Ring if you accept the save penalty; Strange Conduit Ring on concentration setups; Drakethroat weapon buff utility | Keep Sharpshooter hit chance and concentration plan coherent.
Act 3 | The Dead Shot / Gontr Mael; Armour of Agility; initiative/accuracy accessories | Endgame bow choice should fit accuracy, crit or utility rather than legendary colour alone.
A control archer still wins ordinary turns through line of sight, high ground and reliable ranged hit chance.
Combat script
1. Before attacking, decide whether concentration belongs on Hunter’s Mark or on terrain such as Spike Growth.
2. Attack the priority target. After the hit, choose the swarm effect based on position: damage if the enemy is already where you want it, utility if the battlefield can improve.
3. Use Bees to push enemies through hazards or off strong positions; Moths to reduce attack-roll pressure; Jellyfish when Shock/lightning fits the party.
4. At level 7+, Writhing Tide is a Bonus Action reposition tool. Fly over surfaces instead of wasting an Action to escape them.
5. At level 11, consider teleport as defence: +2 AC for the round can be stronger than the swarm’s damage when you expect retaliation.
6. Sharpshooter remains a toggle. Turn it off against high AC if the party has not created Advantage or other accuracy support.
Version | What it does | Cost
Swarmkeeper 12 | Full Mighty Swarm, three feats, simple bow progression | Less spell/condition stacking than multiclass controller packages.
7 Swarmkeeper / 1 Sorcerer / 4 Cleric | Adds Shield/cantrips, Cleric support and stronger condition-stacking options; similar to current Gamestegy controller route | Gives up Mighty Swarm and late Ranger identity.
11 Swarmkeeper / 1 War Cleric | Keeps Mighty Swarm and adds limited War Priest Bonus Action attacks | Loses Ranger 12 feat.
Pure Ranger 12 vs advanced controller multiclass / Honour Mode / Common mistakes
Mighty Swarm control is valuable because reliable status/position changes can prevent enemy actions without relying on a burst exploit.; Do not walk into your own Spike Growth to chase damage. Writhing Tide and swarm teleport exist to preserve positioning.
Risky Ring is a real trade: Advantage is powerful, but the saving-throw disadvantage can be more dangerous in single-save play.; Hunter’s Mark is not automatically worth concentration against short-lived enemies or fights where terrain control decides more turns.
Longstrider is one of the best low-cost prepared utilities in the game and does not compete with combat concentration.; Hunter’s Mark becomes more attractive on Swarmkeeper because Prey’s Scent adds swarm damage to marked targets, but do not spend a Bonus Action marking an enemy that will die before the investment returns.
Spike Growth is the signature terrain spell for a control archer because forced movement can make enemies pay for crossing it.; Choosing a swarm because the VFX looks cool, then never using its unique control rider.
Maintaining Hunter’s Mark while a Spike Growth would control three enemies.; Multiclassing before level 11 without understanding that Mighty Swarm is the subclass’s largest upgrade.
Pushing an enemy away from the party’s melee damage for no reason — forced movement is only good if the new square is better.; Leaving Sharpshooter on when accuracy has collapsed.
FAQ
Which swarm is best? Bees are the easiest control default; Jellyfish and Moths can be better when Shock or Blind solves the fight.
Can I change swarm? The subclass allows changing the swarm when levelling; plan the selection rather than treating it as a free per-turn toggle.
Does Hunter’s Mark matter? Prey’s Scent rewards marked targets, but concentration can be more valuable on terrain control.
Why pure Ranger 12? Mighty Swarm at 11 is a meaningful subclass endpoint and Ranger 12 restores the third feat.
