The obvious Storm Sorcerer trick is Wet plus Lightning: Wet normally makes a target Vulnerable to Lightning and Cold, so a Lightning Bolt or Chain Lightning can hit for double damage. The subclass is better than that one combo. Tempestuous Magic turns every levelled spell into a Bonus Action 9 m flight that does not provoke Opportunity Attacks. At Sorcerer 6, Storm Spells gives Create or Destroy Water and Call Lightning without spending your limited normal spells-known slots, while Heart of the Storm adds local Lightning/Thunder damage and resistance. Pure Sorcerer 12 keeps the highest spell progression and enough Sorcery Points to use Metamagic without turning every fight into a long-rest tax.
Storm Sorcerer is a positioning class disguised as a damage class
The build uses CHA 16, DEX 16 and CON 14, raises Charisma to 20 with the level-4 and level-8 feats, then takes Alert at
12. It does not require a Tempest Cleric dip, permanent Charisma rewards or Arcane Acuity to function.
Storm Sorcery is chosen at level 1; its mobility is useful from the Nautiloid onward, not only after the lightning combo appears.

| Build slot | Recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
Class | Storm Sorcerer 12 | Full Sorcery Point and spell progression; Chain Lightning at 11. |
Starting stats | STR 8 / DEX 16 / CON 14 / INT 8 / WIS 10 / CHA 16 | Good initiative/AC with 14 Constitution and a clean Charisma path. |
Feat 4 | +2 CHA | 18 Charisma. |
Feat 8 | +2 CHA | 20 Charisma. |
Feat 12 | Alert | Going before enemies makes Create Water/control/burst sequencing safer. |
Metamagic core | Twinned + Extended at 2; Quickened at 3; Heightened at 10 | Two cheap utility options, then the two high-impact combat options. |
Damage engine Subclass engine | Wet → Lightning Tempestuous Magic + Storm Spells | Wet doubles Lightning/Cold damage unless an existing resistance is being neutralised instead. Free reposition after levelled spells; Create Water/Call Lightning arrive at 6. |
Electrified water is not cosmetic terrain. Storm builds should think about where Wet is created and where allies will stand before lightning lands.
Quickened Spell costs 3 Sorcery Points, so the strongest line is not “Quickened every round.” A better rule is to ask whether the Bonus Action cast removes an enemy turn, creates Wet before the main lightning spell, or lets you finish a fight before the enemy acts.
Metamagic: spend Sorcery Points on turn structure, not on every spell
Swipe horizontally to view all columns.
| Metamagic | Use it for | Do not waste it on |
|---|---|---|
Twinned Spell | Two eligible single-target buffs/control/offence spells | Spells that already affect multiple targets. |
Extended Spell | Longer-duration conditions or surfaces when duration is the actual constraint | A fight that ends in two rounds anyway. |
Quickened Spell | Create a decisive second cast or cast + reposition/control package | Routine trash damage that forces an unnecessary long rest. |
Heightened Spell | A save-based spell that must stick on a high-value target | Low-stakes targets that can simply be killed. |
Level 1–12 progression

| Level | Pick / milestone | Practical change |
|---|---|---|
1 | Storm Sorcery; Shield + Magic Missile/Chromatic Orb | Tempestuous Magic gives Bonus Action flight after any levelled spell. |
2 | Metamagic: Twinned + Extended | Sorcery Points begin shaping buff/control turns. |
3 | Quickened Spell; Misty Step | You now have both spell-based teleport and post-cast flight. |
4 | Feat: +2 CHA | 18 Charisma. |
5 | Lightning Bolt + Counterspell | First major lightning line spell plus reaction denial. |
6 | Heart of the Storm; Create Water + Call Lightning | The subclass becomes self-sufficient: Wet and repeatable lightning are in the kit. |
7 | 4th-level spells: Ice Storm / utility | Cold also exploits Wet; choose control when lightning line geometry is bad. |
8 | Feat: +2 CHA | 20 Charisma. |
9 | 5th-level spells: Cone of Cold / Hold Monster | Cold burst gives a second Wet damage family; hard control remains valuable. |
10 | Metamagic: Heightened | One more way to force a decisive saving throw. |
11 | 6th-level spell: Chain Lightning; Storm’s Fury | The classic endgame burst arrives; melee attackers can be shocked/pushed by reaction. |
12 | Feat: Alert | Finish with initiative reliability. |
Call Lightning is especially efficient when a longer fight lets you repeat the spell without spending another slot.
Wet sequencing: who creates the water matters less than when it exists
Wet makes normal targets Vulnerable to Lightning and Cold. If a creature already has resistance to one of those damage types, Wet normally removes that resistance instead of jumping directly to vulnerability. Apply Wet before the damaging spell. A thrown water bottle, an ally, environmental water or Create Water can all do the job; from Sorcerer 6 onward, Storm Spells gives you Create or Destroy Water without consuming one of your normal spells-known choices.
Do not automatically Quickened Create Water on one low-HP target. The action-economy cost only makes sense when the doubled follow-up damage, multi-target coverage or boss burst repays the Sorcery Points.
Wet plus Lightning is strongest when the entire target cluster is prepared before the expensive spell is cast.
Call Lightning or Lightning Bolt?
Swipe horizontally to view all columns.
| Spell | Best case | Weakness |
|---|---|---|
Call Lightning | Multi-round fight where you can keep reactivating the storm | Concentration and smaller burst per individual cast; reactivation cannot be used while Wild Shaped, irrelevant here but useful party knowledge. |
Lightning Bolt | Enemies line up and you need immediate non-concentration burst | Line geometry can be awkward. |
Chain Lightning | Act 3 priority cluster or boss + nearby targets | 6th-level resource; do not waste it on enemies already dying. |
Cone of Cold / Ice Storm | Wet targets resist lightning or the cold geometry is better | Still shares the Wet engine but changes damage type and save profile. |
The endgame lightning turn is spectacular, but initiative and target preparation are what make the damage reliable.
Gear progression
Swipe horizontally to view all columns.
| Stage | Useful pieces | Why |
|---|---|---|
Act 1 | The Spellsparkler; Boots of Stormy Clamour; Gloves of Belligerent Skies where available | Lightning Charges/Reverberation reward repeated spell hits and conditions. |
Act 2 | Spell Save DC / initiative gear; Protecty Sparkswall or strong robes depending party allocation | The caster needs spells to land before chasing another small rider. |
Act 3 | Markoheshkir, Robe of the Weave, Hood of the Weave, Spellmight Gloves if accuracy supports them | Markoheshkir adds DC/attack, Arcane Battery and Kereska’s Favour; Bolts of Doom grants extra lightning tools. |
Markoheshkir is an endgame caster tool: +1 spell DC/attack, Arcane Battery and elemental Kereska’s Favour in one staff.
Combat plans for three common fights
Small group: do not build a weather system for three enemies with 20 HP. A control spell, Magic Missile cleanup or ordinary lightning spell is enough. Medium cluster: create Wet once, then use Lightning Bolt/Call Lightning so one setup action pays across several targets. Boss or elite pack: pre-position, establish Wet, then spend Quickened/Heightened only if the extra cast or failed save materially reduces the number of enemy turns.
Draconic Bloodline is cleaner when you want one elemental theme and passive durability. Shadow Magic is stronger when Darkness, Hound of Ill Omen and teleport control are the point. Storm Sorcery is the best fit when movement plus Wet/Lightning sequencing is the gameplay you want every fight.
Honour Mode notes / When another Sorcerer is better
Initiative matters more than theoretical maximum damage. Alert at 12 is a reliability feat, not flavour.
Haste and extra-action rules are stricter in Honour, but this pure Sorcerer plan is built around spell actions/Metamagic rather than martial Extra Attack multiplication.
Electrified surfaces can hurt allies and break friendly positioning. Create Water first with an escape lane in mind.
Do not consume all Sorcery Points in the first easy encounter. Converting spell slots and long-resting constantly is not free in Honour.
Wet breaking invisibility can matter in stealth setups.
Common mistakes
Casting the lightning spell before Wet is applied.
Quickening Create Water on targets that would die to a normal spell anyway.
Standing in the same electrified surface you created.
Treating Tempestuous Magic as an emergency-only button instead of routine free repositioning.; Taking a Cleric dip by habit and delaying pure Sorcerer spell progression without knowing what feature you are buying.
FAQ
Does Wet always double Lightning damage? It normally grants Lightning/Cold Vulnerability; if the target already has resistance, Wet cancels that resistance instead.
When does Storm Sorcerer get Create Water? Level 6 through Storm Spells.
Is pure Storm Sorcerer viable? Yes. The subclass supplies the Wet setup and Call Lightning itself while keeping full Sorcerer progression.
What is the most important Metamagic? Quickened is the most dramatic combat option, but Twinned/Heightened can be more valuable depending on the spell.; Is Markoheshkir mandatory? No. It is an excellent Act 3 endpoint, not a requirement for the class to function.
