College of Swords looks like a martial Bard at level 3, but its endgame ceiling comes from connecting the two halves of the class. Blade Flourish turns Bardic Inspiration into weapon actions. Extra Attack at Bard 6 makes the bow plan real. Helmet of Arcane Acuity lets weapon hits raise spell attack and spell save DC, and Band of the Mystic Scoundrel later turns eligible Illusion/Enchantment spells into Bonus Actions after a weapon hit. The result is a character that can open with bow pressure and end the same turn by landing a much harder control spell.
The build stops being “an archer Bard” when weapon hits start improving your spells
The build uses 10 Swords Bard / 2 Fighter. Bard 10 keeps Magical Secrets, strong control spells and high Bardic Inspiration scaling; Fighter supplies Archery and Action Surge. It loses the level-6 Bard spells of Bard 11–12, but the trade is a much stronger martial/control turn.
Swords Bard is at its best when weapon pressure and spell control are part of the same turn plan.

| Slot | Recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
Split | Swords Bard 10 / Fighter 2 | Keeps Magical Secrets while adding Archery and Action Surge. |

Feat 2 | +2 Dexterity at Bard 8 | Raises routine accuracy, damage, AC and initiative. |
Core resource Endgame engine | Bardic Inspiration / Blade Flourish Helmet of Arcane Acuity + Band of the Mystic Scoundrel | At Bard 5 it refreshes on Short Rest, making Flourishes much easier to spend. Weapon hits build spell DC; then Illusion/Enchantment control can move to the Bonus Action. |
College of Swords arrives at Bard 3 with Blade Flourishes, medium armour and a Fighting Style.

| Character level | Class | Choice / feature | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
1 | Bard 1 | DEX 16 / CHA 16; Healing Word, Longstrider, control spell | Start as a skill-heavy party face with a real support spell list. |
2 | Bard 2 | Song of Rest | The party effectively gains another short-rest cycle. |
3 | Bard 3 | College of Swords; Blade Flourish; fighting style | Ranged Slashing/Defensive/Mobile Flourish come online. |
4 | Bard 4 | Sharpshooter | Major ranged damage toggle; accuracy management becomes part of the build. |
5 | Bard 5 | Font of Inspiration; Inspiration die d8 | Bardic Inspiration now refreshes on Short Rest — a huge Flourish economy spike. |
6 | Bard 6 | Extra Attack | Two normal attacks per Action; ranged Flourish can add even more attack rolls. |
7 | Fighter 1 | Archery Fighting Style | +2 ranged attack rolls directly supports Sharpshooter. |
8 | Fighter 2 | Action Surge | A second Action on the burst/control turn. |
9 | Bard 7 | 4th-level Bard spells | Confusion and other higher control options enter the plan. |
10 | Bard 8 | +2 Dexterity | Routine archery becomes more reliable. |
11 | Bard 9 | 5th-level Bard spells | Hold Monster and late control improve. |
12 | Bard 10 | Expertise; Magical Secrets | Take two spells your party actually lacks, commonly Counterspell plus Command or another high-value utility/control pick. |
Bard 6 Extra Attack is the point where College of Swords stops feeling like a caster carrying a bow.
Blade Flourishes: three different jobs
Swipe horizontally to view all columns.
| Flourish | Use it when |
|---|---|
Slashing Flourish (Ranged) | You can convert one Inspiration into two ranged attacks. Two separate attack rolls make it excellent for weapon-hit stacking and burst. |
Defensive Flourish | You need +4 AC after a hit because the Bard is exposed or concentrating on something valuable. |
Mobile Flourish | Pushing a target 6 m or teleporting to the target creates more value than raw damage. |
Bardic Inspiration is only consumed when the Flourish attack hits, which makes accuracy even more valuable. At Bard 5 the resource comes back on a Short Rest. That is why the build should actually spend Flourishes instead of hoarding them for a theoretical final boss.
Ranged Slashing Flourish is the bridge between Bardic Inspiration and multi-hit bow turns.
The +10 damage side of Sharpshooter comes with -5 to the attack roll. With Archery at character level 7, high Dexterity, Advantage or accuracy gear, that trade becomes attractive. Against high AC before those pieces are online, switch All In off. A build that misses 45% of its “optimal” attacks is not optimal.
Sharpshooter should be toggled according to hit chance; the feat is strongest when you manage the penalty.
Sharpshooter is a toggle, not a personality / Act 1 gear: get a bow plan before you get an Arcane Acuity plan
Yuan-Ti Scale Mail is a clean high-Dex medium armour bridge, Risky Ring can solve attack Advantage at a saving-throw cost, and Act 2 hand crossbows such as Hellfire Hand Crossbow can support the ranged lane. Do not force all of them into the same character if the party has another archer.
Helmet of Arcane Acuity is in the Mason’s Guild secret basement. Each weapon attack that deals damage grants Arcane Acuity for 2 turns, raising spell attack and spell save DC while the condition remains. Slashing Flourish is especially good at building it because one Bardic Inspiration can create multiple weapon attack rolls. This is the point where “archer Bard” becomes “archer who creates its own control DC.”
Item / slot | Where / timing | Why
Hand Crossbow +1 pair or good longbow | Act 1 traders / loot | Early Bard can use whichever ranged weapon package your party supports.
Gloves of Archery | Goblin Camp | Simple ranged damage if another archer does not need them.
Graceful Cloth or good medium armour | Mountain Pass / normal loot | DEX or AC route; Swords gets medium armour at Bard
3.
Titanstring Bow (optional) | Zhentarim route | Very strong only when the party deliberately supplies Strength; not required.
Knife of the Undermountain King (utility) | Crèche trader | Crit utility if no melee build needs it more.
The Band of the Mystic Scoundrel is found in the Jungle route from Akabi’s game at the Circus. After you hit with a weapon attack, Illusion Quickening lets you cast an Illusion or Enchantment spell as a Bonus Action that turn. That means the Bard can attack to build Arcane Acuity, then spend the Bonus Action on Command, Hold Person, Fear, Confusion or another eligible control spell depending on the exact spell school and situation.
Endgame piece | Role
Band of the Mystic Scoundrel | Turns eligible control into Bonus Action after a weapon hit.
Helmet of Arcane Acuity | Weapon hits raise control reliability.
The Dead Shot / Gontr Mael | Strong bow endpoints when accuracy/utility matter more than Titanstring setup.
Armour of Agility | Premium high-Dex medium armour if available.
Act 3: Band of the Mystic Scoundrel closes the loop / Act 2: Helmet of Arcane Acuity changes what the Bard is / Combat rotation
1. Open from a clean firing lane. If Sharpshooter hit chance is bad, turn All In off before committing.
2. Use Slashing Flourish or normal attacks to create multiple weapon hits and build Arcane Acuity.
3. If the enemy can be ended by bow damage, keep attacking; control is not automatically better than a dead target.
4. If a dangerous group or boss survives, use the Bonus Action from Mystic Scoundrel for an eligible control spell while your spell DC is elevated.
5. Use Action Surge when another attack sequence or a second spell Action genuinely decides the encounter; do not press it just because it is available.
6. Short Rest when Bardic Inspiration/Action Surge economy is the limiting resource; Song of Rest makes this build unusually rest-efficient.
Honour Mode notes
The build does not require surprise or action-economy bugs. Flourish, Arcane Acuity and Bonus Action control are normal mechanics.
Sharpshooter miss chance is more expensive when one failed opener leaves a Legendary Action boss alive. Manage the toggle.
Band of the Mystic Scoundrel consumes the Bonus Action lane, so avoid stacking too many competing Bonus Action items/abilities.
Action Surge remains a predictable burst tool under Honour rules.; Control spells still need the right target type. Arcane Acuity cannot make Hold Person affect a non-humanoid.
College of Swords can choose a Fighting Style at Bard 3; the build’s late Fighter dip still adds Archery for bows.
Alternative routes

| Version | Why choose it |
|---|---|
Swords Bard 12 | Simplest pure Bard; third feat and level-6 Bard spells, but no Archery/Action Surge. |
Swords Bard 10 / Fighter 2 | Recommended ranged control build; Magical Secrets + Archery + Action Surge. |
Swords Bard 10 / Paladin 2 | Melee “Bardadin” route using spell slots for Divine Smite instead of a ranged-controller identity. |
Common mistakes
Using every Bardic Inspiration on dialogue and then entering combat with no Flourishes.
Leaving Sharpshooter on when hit chance is poor.
Equipping Helmet of Arcane Acuity but casting control before making weapon hits.
Building Arcane Acuity stacks and then spending the Bonus Action on a potion when Mystic Scoundrel control was the real win condition.
Copying the ranged build onto a melee Bardadin and wondering why the gear/feat plan conflicts.
FAQ
Is Swords Bard still strong after Patch 8? Yes; Patch 8 added Glamour but did not remove the Swords martial/control engine.
Why Fighter 2? Archery plus Action Surge improves the ranged burst turn without giving up Bard 10 Magical Secrets.
Does Ranged Slashing Flourish hit the same target twice? BG3 targeting permits two chosen targets; current implementations can allow the same target, but treat that behavior as version-sensitive.
Do I need Band of the Mystic Scoundrel? No for levelling; it is the Act 3 piece that turns the build into a particularly efficient weapon-to-control loop.; Should I raise Charisma or Dexterity first? This build prioritises reliable ranged attacks, so DEX gets the feat investment while CHA starts at 16 and Arcane Acuity later helps spell DC.
