DayZ does not have a mod manager that sorts your list for you. The launcher loads mods in the order you list them, and a mod that loads before its dependency loads broken or not at all. Update 1.30 makes order mistakes louder: terrain mods built on the old navmesh format and animation mods built on the old animation format fail in ways that look like random crashes. Get the order right first, then diagnose what is left.
Quick answer
Order: CF first, then Dabs Framework, then framework-dependent mods, then content mods. A mod never loads before the framework it requires.
Only one animation-changing mod at a time. Two together crash by design, not by bug.
On 1.30, suspect three breakage classes first: terrain navmesh, animation config format, and any mod not updated since before October 15, 2026.
Diagnose by halving: disable half the list, test, and repeat. It finds the culprit faster than guessing.
The order, from first to last

| Position | What goes here | Why | Example from the verified list |
|---|---|---|---|
1 | Community Framework | Almost every major mod lists it as required; nothing that needs it may load before it. | CF (1559212036) |
2 | Other frameworks | Dabs Framework is required by Expansion-Core and the Editor tool. | Dabs Framework (2545327648) |
3 | Framework-dependent systems | Admin tools and the Expansion foundation need their frameworks already loaded. | VPPAdminTools, Community-Online-Tools, DayZ-Expansion-Core |
4 | Content mods | Weapons, clothing, vehicles, building, and locks add items and systems on top of the base. | SNAFU Weapons, WindstridesClothingPack, CarPack, BaseBuildingPlus, Code Lock |
5 | Animation mods, at most one | The Enfusion animation limit allows one animation-changing mod; pick Survivor Animations or another, never two. | Survivor Animations (2918418331) |
Terrain mods are a separate case: a server runs one terrain mission at a time, so a terrain mod is not stacked in the same list the way content mods are. That is why DeerIsle does not appear as a load-order item here at all: its problem on 1.30 is not position, it is the navmesh format, covered below. If a server list includes a map mod, the server mission file, not the launcher order, decides which terrain loads.
The three 1.30 breakage classes
1. Terrain navmesh: the format changed, no backward compatibility
Update 1.30 moved the navmesh file to a newer version with no backward compatibility, and Bohemia told terrain modders to regenerate their navmesh files. A terrain mod that has not done that can show the exact symptom reported for DeerIsle in an October 22 discussion: broken navmesh stops zombies from spawning normally. The fix belongs to the mod author, not to the player: no load-order trick repairs a navmesh that was built for the old format. Do not run a terrain mod on 1.30 until its author or changelog states the navmesh was regenerated.
2. Animation config format: rebuilt or broken
Animation files moved to the Enfusion config format in 1.30, which is why animation mods were among the first to need updates after launch, and why motorbike-related animation work changed at the same time. A pre-1.30 animation mod can crash the game on load or produce wrong poses. The rule from the Survivor Animations description still governs: only one animation-changing mod at a time. If a server ran an animation mod before 1.30, confirm its 1.30 rebuild before carrying it over; do not assume the old version survived the format change.
3. Old mods in general: the date is the first filter
Any mod not updated since before October 15, 2026, is suspect on 1.30 until its author says otherwise. That single filter removes the three entries on the best-mods removal list: BuilderItems (November 2024), VanillaPlusPlusMap (June 2020), and MMG (October 2023). It also explains why a high subscription count means nothing here: subscriptions accumulate over years, while 1.30 compatibility is a property of the current build. When a mod page shows no update since before launch, treat it as unconfirmed, not as probably fine.
Known conflicts in the verified list
Two animation mods together: crash or unexpected results. Pick one.
VPPAdminTools and Community-Online-Tools together: two admin ecosystems overlap. Pick one.
BuilderItems with DayZ Expansion: the items are already built into Expansion. Do not load both.
BBPItemPack with BaseBuildingPlus on 1.30: the author says the item pack is currently broken. Run BBP alone and remove third-party fix patches.
Expansion Licensed without Core, or Core without its modules: Core alone is a foundation, not the full Expansion game. Load the set the Expansion documentation describes, and keep the Licensed 1.30 annotation from the best-mods article.
Diagnose by halving, then read the log
When a server or client fails after a list change, disable half the list and test. If the failure disappears, the culprit is in the disabled half; if it stays, it is in the enabled half. Repeat until one mod remains. Then check that mod against the three breakage classes above before replacing it: a terrain mod needs a navmesh answer, an animation mod needs a 1.30 rebuild answer, and an old mod needs an update-date answer. Server owners should also read the server .RPT log after a failed start: it names the failing mod far more often than the player-facing error message does.
Frequently asked questions
Does load order matter for players joining a server?
No. The server list decides what your client loads, in the server order. Load order is a server-owner job; the player job is to let the launcher match the server list exactly.
My server ran fine before 1.30. Why does it crash now?
Most likely one of the three breakage classes: a terrain mod on the old navmesh, an animation mod on the old format, or an old mod that has not been updated since before October 15,
2026. Halve the list to find it, then check that mod evidence before putting it back.
Can I run two animation mods if they touch different things?
No. The limit is on loading animation-changing mods, not on what they change. The Survivor Animations description states it plainly: more than one is not possible without crashes or unexpected results.
Verification note
Version baseline: DayZ update 1.30 (October 15, 2026, free) plus Hotfix 1 (October 21, 2026, PC build 1.30.164200). Badlands is a separate paid DLC and the base game is required.
Workshop ranking re-pulled on October 30, 2026, via the Steam Web API: 114,039 items in total. Subscription counts in this article are the October 30 values.
Each recommendation states its own evidence type: stated by the author, updated after 1.30 with no fault reports found, or confirmed by an independent 1.30 check. Nothing here is called compatible on a bare assertion.
