Football Manager 27 is free to play right now, and the clock runs out on Tuesday. The football management simulator from Sports Interactive, published by SEGA, opened its Launch Preview for free on PC and Mac at 18:00 GMT on October 29, and the free period closes at 18:00 GMT on November
3. That is 10:00 a.m. Pacific, 1:00 p.m. Eastern, and 2:00 a.m. Beijing time on November
4. Every mode is included, and every career started during free play carries into the paid preview and the full release on November 10.
At a glance
Free window: October 29 at 18:00 GMT to November 3 at 18:00 GMT, on PC and Mac only. No sign-up is required and there is no time or progress limit inside the window.
Where: Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store, and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Console versions are not included.
Saves: careers started during free play carry into the paid Launch Preview and the full release. FM24 and FM26 saves can also carry over.
Price: $59.99, with 10% off to $53.99 for pre-purchases from SEGA-approved retailers. Pre-purchasing also keeps Launch Preview access from November 3 to November 10.
Caveats: the preview build may lack some licensed club and player assets while approvals finish, and Steam lists no Steam Deck rating for FM27 yet.
A full game, not a demo
The important detail is scope. Sports Interactive says all modes, features, and areas of FM27 are available during free play, with no limit on time played or progress. That includes the brand-new Shuffle Draft multiplayer mode, announced on October 27 and built with FIFAe, in which players assemble squads from sets of 20 players chosen by the host, with up to 32 players per event. The Launch Preview replaces the old beta or advanced access, and the studio calls it closer to launch quality than past early builds.
The save carryover is the part that turns a trial into a head start. Any career started during the free week continues into the paid Launch Preview and then into the full game, without starting again. FM27 can also pick up save progress from FM24 and FM26, as long as the save sits on the player PC or in platform cloud storage. A manager who spends the weekend building a squad is not throwing that work away on November 10.
What happens at 18:00 GMT on November 3
At 18:00 GMT on November 3, the free period closes and the paid Launch Preview begins. Players who pre-purchased FM27 on PC from a SEGA-approved retailer keep playing straight through to November
10. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers also continue through their subscriptions. Everyone else stops at the deadline and waits for launch day, with their free-week save ready to resume if they buy in.
The deadline math rewards deciding early. Pre-purchasing from a SEGA-approved retailer costs $53.99 on Steam against a $59.99 full price, a 10% discount that runs through the preview period. Waiting until November 10 keeps the free-week save, but costs full price and a week of continuity. A convinced manager should pre-purchase before the window closes; an unconvinced one should play the weekend hard and judge the match engine, not the menus.
Why SEGA is giving a new game away for five days
Sports Interactive is open about the reason: earlier this year it said it wanted to show more of FM27 before asking for pre-orders, and studio director Miles Jacobson called the free week the ultimate try-before-you-buy. SEGA describes the move as believed to be an industry first for an annual title. The context is a rocky couple of years: Football Manager 25 was cancelled before release, and coverage notes that Football Manager 26, which moved to the Unity engine, sits at Mostly Negative on Steam.
That history makes the free week a confidence play with a visible risk. If the match engine, clearer interface, and new tactical tools land, five free days convert sceptics better than any trailer. If not, the same five days hand every sceptic the evidence before launch. Players should treat the preview as the verdict it is meant to be: judge the football, judge the performance on your own machine, and check the 20 GB storage requirement before downloading.
The honest caveats before you download
Three caveats belong in the download decision. First, the preview build may lack some licensed club and player assets while rights-holder approvals finish, so a few names and kits may not match real-world data yet. Second, Steam lists no Steam Deck rating for FM27, so handheld play is unproven. Third, the free week covers PC and Mac only: FM27 Console for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S is not part of free play and cannot be pre-purchased yet, though it can be wishlisted.
None of those caveats changes the core offer. Five days of the full game, with saves carrying to launch, costs only download time and disk space. The deadline is Tuesday at 18:00 GMT, which is 2:00 a.m. Beijing time on Wednesday, so players in China should treat Tuesday evening as the last session, not Wednesday morning. Start a career this weekend, and the November 10 launch continues the same career.
