Baldur's Gate 3 Oath of the Ancients Paladin Build: Auras, Smite, Leveling & Gear

Guide chapters11 chapters

Oath of the Ancients is the Paladin for players who want Divine Smite without turning every spell slot into damage. Healing Radiance gives the subclass a short-rest, bonus-action party heal; Aura of Protection makes Charisma a defensive stat at Paladin 6; and Aura of Warding at Paladin 7 gives the Paladin and nearby allies resistance to damage from spells. That creates a compact frontline formation that can survive enemy spell turns while still carrying Great Weapon Master and burst Smites.

The build in one paragraph

The default recommendation here is pure Ancients Paladin

12. It gets three feats, Improved Divine Smite at level 11 and avoids the action-economy caveats that make older Warlock multiclass guides confusing on Honour Mode. If you specifically want a single-ability Hexblade variant, 11 Paladin / 1 Hexblade is a valid alternative, but it is not required for the subclass to be strong.

Nature’s Wrath is not the build’s main damage button; it is one of several support/control tools around the Paladin core.

Class

Oath of the Ancients Paladin 12

Three feats, Improved Divine Smite and the complete aura package.

Role

Frontline striker + party protection

Smite deletes priority targets; auras reduce party failure chance.

Starting stats

Fighting Style

Self-contained point-buy with both attack and aura stats online.

Simple +1 AC; useful regardless of which two-handed weapon wins the gear contest.

Feat 1

Great Weapon Master at 4

Major damage increase when hit chance is healthy; bonus attack on crit/kill.

Feat 2

+2 Strength at 8

Raises baseline weapon accuracy/damage to 18 STR.

Feat 3

Signature defence

+2 Strength at 12

Aura of Protection + Aura of Warding

Reaches 20 STR without permanent story bonuses or elixir dependence.

Saving throws from CHA, plus spell-damage resistance in a 3 m formation.

Healing Radiance costs a Bonus Action and Channel Oath charge, then repeats its healing at the start of the Paladin’s next turn.

Why Charisma still matters on a Strength Paladin

Strength determines the weapon attack. Charisma determines a different part of the build: Aura of Protection adds the Paladin’s Charisma modifier to nearby allied saving throws, and Healing Radiance includes Charisma in its healing formula. You do not need to choose between “damage stat” and “support stat”; the class is designed to make both useful. Starting at 16 CHA keeps the aura meaningful without sacrificing a reliable Strength progression.

Healing Radiance heals the Paladin and allies within 3 m for proficiency bonus + Paladin level + Charisma modifier, then repeats the same healing on the next turn. It does not affect undead or constructs. Because Channel Oath refreshes on a Short Rest, this is a practical encounter resource rather than a once-per-day panic button.

Aura of Protection is the first half of the defensive identity; one level later Ancients adds Aura of Warding against spell damage.

LevelPick / featureWhat changes

1

Ancients; Healing Radiance

You already have a useful Bonus Action team heal; the oath choice matters from the first beach.

2

Defence; Divine Smite

Weapon hits can convert spell slots into burst. Set Smite reactions to Ask so you choose when to spend.

3

Nature’s Wrath; Turn the Faithless; Speak with Animals; Ensnaring Strike

Adds encounter tools rather than a fixed rotation.

4

Great Weapon Master

Turn All In off against high AC; keep the crit/kill Bonus Action benefit in mind.

5

Extra Attack; Misty Step; Moonbeam

The major martial spike and a reliable mobility spell.

6

Aura of Protection

CHA now improves nearby allied saves; keep the aura actually enabled.

7

Aura of Warding

You and allies within 3 m take half damage from spells.

8

+2 Strength

Raise routine accuracy/damage to 18 STR.

9

Protection from Energy; Plant Growth; level-3 Paladin spells

Warden of Vitality, Revivify and other third-level tools broaden the support lane.

10

Aura of Courage

Nearby allies become immune to Frightened.

11

Improved Divine Smite

Every melee hit adds radiant damage without spending a slot.

12

+2 Strength

Reach 20 STR on the no-story-bonus route.

Great Weapon Master is powerful because it is a decision, not because All In should stay enabled forever.

Smite discipline: do not spend three fights of resources in one trash pack

Divine Smite is strongest as a conversion tool. A normal weapon attack already does useful damage; a critical hit doubles the Smite dice, a priority enemy may need to die before it acts, and a fiend or undead takes additional radiant damage. Those are reasons to spend. A nearly dead goblin is not. Put Smite reactions on Ask so a critical hit or important target gives you a decision instead of an automatic spell-slot tax.

Ancients still has a real spellbook: Misty Step, Moonbeam and the Paladin support list compete with Smite for the same slots.

The reaction prompt is the safest way to reserve Divine Smite for crits and priority targets.

Slot / item | Where / timing | Why

Sword of Justice / best +1 two-hander | Risen Road / Act 1 | Easy early great-weapon baseline; replace it when a stronger two-hander clearly wins.

Adamantine Splint Armour | Grymforge forge | 18 AC, damage reduction and anti-critical value suit the aura frontliner.

Gloves of the Growling Underdog | Goblin Camp | Advantage when surrounded can help Great Weapon Master accuracy.

Disintegrating Night Walkers | Nere route | Misty Step plus terrain immunity; movement is real damage for melee.

The Whispering Promise | Early trader pool | Healing can apply a short Bless effect, making Healing Radiance more than raw HP.

Act 2 throws more spell damage, conditions and large enemy groups at the party, which is exactly when the Ancients aura package becomes visible. Do not chase a marginal weapon upgrade while ignoring initiative, saving throws and mobility. Halberd of Vigilance is an excellent initiative/Force option if another build is not using it; Darkfire Shortbow can sit in the ranged slot for its utility; Cloak of Protection and defensive rings are often more valuable than another tiny damage rider.

Act 2 gear: protect concentration and keep the party close / Act 1 gear: make the frontline reliable / Act 3 endpoints

ItemUse

Balduran’s Giantslayer

Clean Strength two-hander endpoint when raw melee damage is the priority.

Armour of Persistence

Excellent always-on heavy defence for the party anchor.

Helm of Balduran

Legacy of the Masters

Premium survivability if another build does not need it more.

Accuracy and damage support for Great Weapon Master turns.

Combat loop

1. Before the pull, decide whether you need a spell slot for control/support or can reserve most slots for Smite.

2. Close the gap with movement or Misty Step rather than wasting an entire Action on Dash when positioning can be solved earlier.

3. Use Healing Radiance when several allies will benefit from both healing pulses; do not spend it on one tiny scratch.

4. Attack normally and confirm hit chance before enabling Great Weapon Master: All In.

5. Spend Smite on critical hits, priority kills, fiends/undead or boss-phase damage — not on every successful swing.

6. Keep allies within aura range when enemy spells are the real threat; spreading out is correct only when area effects punish clustering.

Ancients is mechanically strong because its oath is also restrictive. Choices that harm innocents, disrupt nature or violate the oath can create an Oathbreaker state. Do not choose Ancients only for Aura of Warding if you dislike role-playing around an oath. Restoring an oath is possible, but the narrative constraint is part of the subclass cost.

Honour Mode notes

  • Pure Paladin 12 is robust because it does not depend on Warlock Extra Attack stacking, which is restricted under Honour rules.

  • Aura of Warding reduces spell damage but does not stack multiplicatively with other resistance; do not assume a resistant ally takes quarter damage.

  • Great Weapon Master must be managed more carefully when one miss can leave a Legendary Action user alive.

  • Keep Smite on reaction prompts. Single-save campaigns punish accidental resource dumps.

  • Aura positioning is part of the build. If the controller stands 12 m away, your defensive investment is not helping them.

VersionGainCostPick it when

Ancients 12

Three feats; pure progression; 20 STR without external bonuses

Uses both STR and CHA

Default recommendation and simplest Honour-safe route.

Ancients 11 / Hexblade 1

Bind Hexed Weapon can make a compatible main-hand weapon use CHA; Shield/Hexblade tools

Loses third Paladin feat; multiclass order/weapon choices matter

You specifically want a single-ability Charisma weapon route and accept the feat trade.

Common mistakes

  • Treating Healing Radiance like a single-target potion instead of waiting for multiple allies to enter its 3 m radius.

  • Turning every spell slot into Smite and then reaching the real boss with no burst or utility left.

  • Forgetting to enable/position Aura of Protection and Aura of Warding.

  • Leaving Great Weapon Master All In active at terrible hit chances.

  • Breaking the oath accidentally by focusing on stats while ignoring role-play consequences.

FAQ

  • Is Ancients the best Paladin oath? It is one of the strongest defensive/support oaths; Vengeance, Crown, Devotion and Oathbreaker solve different jobs.

  • Does Aura of Warding halve all damage? No. It grants resistance to damage from spells, not every source.

  • Does Healing Radiance recharge on Short Rest? Channel Oath charges do, making it a frequent encounter tool.

  • Should I multiclass Warlock? Not by default. Pure 12 is complete; 11/1 Hexblade is an optional Charisma-weapon route.

  • Is Great Weapon Master mandatory? No, but it is the strongest generic two-handed damage feat when you actively manage the accuracy toggle.
