Comfort is the quietest powerful number in Valheim. It does not raise your health, your stamina, or your damage. It decides how long Rested lasts after you leave the fire, and Rested doubles your stamina regeneration, raises health regeneration by half, raises Eitr regeneration by half in the later game, and adds 50 percent to skill experience. Get the room right once, and every expedition starts with a buff that lasts almost half an hour. Get it wrong, and you walk out with eight minutes and wonder why the buff keeps vanishing.
At a glance
Formula: Rested minutes = 7 + your comfort level. Comfort 1 gives 8 minutes; comfort 22 gives 29 minutes.
Normal maximum: comfort
22. Seasonal Maypole and Yule Tree, which sit outside every category, can lift it to 24, or 31 minutes.
Only the best item in each category counts. Two rugs do not stack; a rug and a chair do.
Every comfort item must be within 10 metres of you. The Hearth gives its second point only within 8 metres.
Without shelter, comfort is capped at 1, whatever else you built.
Rested is removed when you log out. It never carries into a new session.
The Comfort is King achievement needs comfort
20. Patch 1.0.21 fixed a bug that tied it, wrongly, to difficulty level.
Time-limited footnote only: the Jack-O-Turnip can be built from 1 October to 6 November. It is a Lights item worth 2 comfort, not a permanent new system.
How Resting becomes Rested
Resting is a state, Rested is the buff you take with you. Stand or sit under a roof near a lit fire, with no enemies nearby, and after about 20 uninterrupted seconds of Resting the game converts it into Rested. Sleeping in a bed also applies Rested at once, without the wait. Moving out of range, or letting the fire die, restarts the wait. The game shows your number only while you are Resting: look for Comfort: X under the Resting icon at the top right of the HUD. Check it after every new piece you place. While Rested, you gain 50 percent faster health regeneration, 100 percent faster stamina regeneration, 100 percent faster Eitr regeneration, and 50 percent more skill experience. The skill experience part is not shown in the buff description in game, but it is part of the effect. A few states block the whole chain: you cannot gain Rested while Wet, Burning, Freezing, or Poisoned. One reported exception is worth knowing: a heated Hot Tub can give Rested while you are Wet, which makes it a useful stop after a rainy trip.
The category rule, and why your number stops moving
Every comfort item belongs to a category, and only the single highest-value item in each category contributes. Items with no category are the exception: different no-category items stack with each other, but the same item never stacks with itself. That is why a hall full of furniture can still read comfort
8. You did not build too little. You built the same categories twice. The route to 22 is therefore a checklist, not a shopping list. Take the best item from each category, put them all within 10 metres of where you rest, and keep the fire lit.
Shelter near a fire:
2. You need a roof with 80 percent cover. Holes count against it.
Fire, Hearth:
2. A campfire or brazier gives
1. The Hearth gives its second point only within 8 metres, although its fire effect reaches 12 metres.
Chair, any throne:
3. The single biggest category. A plain Chair gives 2 for only 4 Finewood.
Bed, Dragon Bed:
2. A regular Bed gives 1.
Table, Round Table, Long Heavy Table, or Long Carved Table:
2. A basic Table gives 1.
Rug, Bearskin, Wolf, Lox, or Moose Hide Carpet:
2. Deer Rug and Sealskin Rug give 1.
Banner, Red or Blue Jute Curtain:
2. Ordinary banners give 1 and do not stack with curtains.
Bathroom, heated Hot Tub:
2. A Barber Station gives 1 and does not stack with the tub. The tub counts only while it is fuelled with wood.
Lights, Lava Lantern or Snow Lantern:
2. Dvergr Lanterns give 1.
Plants, Flower Garland or Fey Lights: 1.
Stands, Armor Stand or Item Stand:
1. The stand does not need anything hung on it.
Ashlands, any green pot or Asksvin Skeleton: 1.
Total: 2 + 2 + 3 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 22, which gives 7 + 22 = 29 minutes of Rested.
What you can reach at each stage
Biomes do not change comfort directly. They decide which items you can build. The stages below are re-added from the wiki item lists plus the shelter value, and they exclude seasonal pieces. Key item costs, as wiki figures: Chair, 4 Finewood; Raven Throne, 20 Finewood and 10 Iron Nails; Hearth, 15 Stone, and it needs a Stonecutter nearby; Dragon Bed, 40 Finewood, 7 Deer Hide, 4 Wolf Pelt, 10 Feathers, 15 Iron Nails; Round Table, 10 Finewood, 2 Tar, 20 Iron Nails; Wolf Rug, 4 Wolf Pelt; Red Jute Curtain, 4 Red Jute and 1 Finewood; Hot Tub, 20 Wood, 6 Tar, 10 Iron, 8 Stone; Lava Lantern, 1 Flametal, 1 Proustite Powder, 1 Sulfur; Snow Lantern, 8 Snowballs, as the Deep North alternative to the Lava Lantern; Flower Garland, 2 Finewood and 1 Dandelion; Item Stand, 4 Finewood and 1 Bronze Nails. The Black Forest stage is deliberately left without a single number here: the two sources consulted disagree there by one to two points, and the wiki's own Black Forest row does not re-add from its item list. The direction is not in doubt, Finewood furniture is the best early jump in the game, but a guide should not print a number it cannot re-add.
Meadows: comfort 5, 12 minutes. Campfire, Bed, Deer Rug, under a roof.
Swamp: comfort 14, 21 minutes. The Hearth and a throne arrive here.
Mountain: comfort 16, 23 minutes. Dragon Bed and a Jute Curtain arrive here.
Plains: comfort 19, 26 minutes. Round Table and Hot Tub arrive here.
Mistlands: comfort 20, 27 minutes. A Dvergr Lantern arrives here, and 20 is exactly the Comfort is King threshold.
Ashlands and Deep North: comfort 22, 29 minutes. Lava Lantern, or Snow Lantern in the Deep North, and a green pot complete the set. Deep North does not raise the ceiling above Ashlands; it offers alternative items at the same values.
The best compact comfort room
Put everything inside one 10 metre circle. A long hall spreads your points out and quietly costs you comfort, because the 10 metre range is measured from you, not from the room. Place the Hearth first, on stone or solid ground in the centre of the room. It has to sit on the ground, stone flooring, or a strongly supported floor; on an unsupported wooden floor it breaks as soon as you place it. Put your throne within 8 metres of it, because that is where you will sit and check the number. Lay the rug beside the throne, then add the table and bed, hang a curtain on the nearest wall, and finish with one Item Stand and one Flower Garland, which cost almost nothing. Vent the smoke. A Hearth and a Hot Tub both produce it, so leave a gap in the roofline.
Why your comfort is stuck at 1
This is the most common comfort complaint, and the fix is almost always the roof. If you sit by a fire without Shelter, every other source is ignored and comfort is capped at
1. Work through this list when your number looks low: no Shelter icon means you need a roof with 80 percent cover, and holes in a roof count against it; a Hearth only giving 1 means stand within 8 metres of it; items not counting means check the 10 metre range, since some pieces are measured from unusual points, such as the top of a Hanging Brazier; a Hot Tub not counting means it is not fuelled with wood; a fire out means fire items give comfort only while lit, and a Hearth also dies in rain without a roof, and in strong wind without 70 percent cover; lots of furniture with a low score means check for doubles, since a Bearskin Rug plus a Wolf Rug is still 2.
Rested on the road and in dungeons
You do not need a finished base. A campfire costs 5 Stone and 2 Wood, and any roofed space works. Inside most dungeons, such as Burial Chambers, you are already sheltered: light a campfire near the entrance and you get comfort 3, shelter 2 plus campfire 1, for a 10-minute Rested. Outdoors with no roof, sit beside a campfire for comfort 1 and 8 minutes of Rested. Press X to sit on PC. It is a poor buff but a free one, as long as the weather lets the fire burn. Before a boss, the better move is a small roofed hut near the altar, not a campfire in the open. Fires also do useful work away from the main room: Smelters, Charcoal Kilns, Blast Furnaces, and Stone Ovens count as fire while they are running, as do the Forge and Black Forge while you use them.
Seasonal items, and the Halloween footnote
Seasonal pieces stay in your world after the event ends. Once destroyed, they cannot be rebuilt until the window returns. Maypole: plus 1, and it stacks with everything, because it sits outside every category. Build window 1 June to 6 July. It can also rarely be found in a Meadows Abandoned Village, which is the only way to use one outside its window, but it will not move with you. Yule Tree: plus 1, and it stacks. Build window 1 December to 6 January. With both, the ceiling is 24 comfort, or 31 minutes of Rested. The Jack-O-Turnip is the time-limited footnote, not a long-term system. It can be built from 1 October to 6 November, it costs 4 Turnip and 2 Resin, the recipe should unlock when you pick up a turnip, and it is worth 2 comfort in the Lights category, the same as a Lava Lantern, with no Ashlands materials needed. It therefore lifts a mid-game room that has no lantern yet: on the wiki numbers, a Mountain room at 16 would reach 18 with it, and a Plains room at 19 would reach
21. It does not push comfort past 22, and a broken one cannot be replaced until next October. If you are reading this after 6 November, ignore it and build the Lava Lantern or Snow Lantern instead. Do not plan a permanent room around a lamp you cannot rebuild.
Comfort is King, on patch 1.0.21
The achievement needs comfort
20. Normal progression reaches it in the Mistlands, or in the Plains while the Halloween window lasts if you add a Jack-O-Turnip. Iron Gate's patch 1.0.21 notes, released on Steam on 28 October 2026, include this fix: Fixed a bug where some achievements were incorrectly tied to the current difficulty level - Mighty Halls, Comfort is King, The Homesteader, The Architect, and The Survivor. If your difficulty setting blocked it before, try again on 1.0.21. Iron Gate also said the patch would take a few days to reach all platforms, so console players should confirm their build is on 1.0.21 first. An earlier patch, 1.0.16, had already fixed a separate case where Comfort is King did not unlock correctly. Common mistakes, to close: building two rugs, two banners, or two lanterns and expecting them to add up; building a grand hall wider than 10 metres from the sitting spot; putting the Hearth on an unsupported wooden floor, or too far from the throne to give its second point; resting while Wet, or with a cold Hearth; and chasing comfort 24 as if it were the normal goal. Comfort 22 is the normal ceiling. Build one good room where you start each session, because Rested is removed when you log out. Twenty seconds at the fire, once, is the cheapest buff in Valheim.
