One of the most expensive beginner mistakes is seeing a bottle and assuming the liquid inside is safe. In DayZ, separate the container from its contents. A useful bottle can hold unsafe water, while a plain settlement pump can be one of the most reliable resources on the map.
DayZ food is not just a calorie search. A run can still collapse after a successful hunt if you eat raw meat, touch food with bloody hands or assume every cooked steak is safe. The reliable approach is to separate the problem into four steps: obtain food, handle it without contaminating yourself, convert risky food into a safer state and only then use it to stabilize the character.

DayZ punishes players who solve the wrong problem. Hunger is not Blood loss, bandaging does not restore Health, a full bottle does not guarantee safe water, and a larger backpack is not automatically an upgrade if its weight destroys your stamina. A fire is not just a warmth effect. It converts raw meat and fish into useful food, helps manage cold conditions and creates a repeatable survival loop after hunting or fishing. On Sakhal, fire becomes important earlier because temperature and frozen resources can make it part of the opening route rather than a mid-game convenience.
Fishing turns a handful of common materials into a repeatable food source without the noise and ammunition cost of hunting. The important part is that modern DayZ fishing is not the older Early Access system. The current loop uses an event cue: cast with a baited setup, watch the water, and release the action when the splash/bite event occurs. If you miss the timing window, you normally have to rebait and try again.
The word Best on a jacket is only the start. Your actual heat comfort comes from the insulation of every relevant body slot, the condition of those items, how wet they are, local weather, wind, altitude, shelter and temporary heat buffer.
DayZ does not simply punish you for sprinting. Your maximum stamina is directly reduced by the weight you carry, and that changes which actions remain available. A pack full of useful items can become a bad loadout if it leaves you unable to vault, heavy attack or sprint when the fight starts.
A single infected is rarely the most dangerous thing in DayZ. The real cost is what the encounter removes from your run: clothing durability, blood, bandages, stamina, ammunition, noise discipline and attention.
A compass tells you direction. A GPS gives coordinates. iZurvive gives map context. None of those tools can replace the first step: identify something in the world that proves where you are.
DayZ deliberately gives several illnesses the same generic sickness icon. The useful diagnosis comes from two things the icon does not tell you: what happened just before the illness and which symptoms appeared afterward. Vomiting can point to Cholera, Salmonellosis, Food Poisoning or gas exposure, while Fever can appear with Cholera, Influenza or Stage 2 Wound Infection. Taking the “strongest” medicine at random wastes time and can leave the real problem untouched.
If Cholera appears, the first job is to stop repeating the exposure. Pond, stream and lake water can carry the pathogen. Freshly spawned Plastic Bottles and Canteens can also contain contaminated water, and food or drink touched by an infected survivor can reinfect you after treatment. A Blood transfusion from a sick survivor can also transmit the disease.
